Great drainage system is in place in Lagos, but due to the high level tides and rivers overflowing, there’s a pushback of water from these rivers. There’s little to be done really. 80% of houses are built on waterlogged lands. Lagos is water. Gotta start allowing these waters to start going through the oceans and nearby states.

Lekki is the Yoruba word for Lake…. Go figure. Lagos houses 12% of Nigeria’s population but the other states aren’t doing anything! Nigeria needs more “Lagos-type” cities. If the US only had NY it will be in a bad state. You can’t have about 10,000 people move into Lagos daily and expect the infrastructure to sustain it especially with the type of governance at the center. Most Nigerian youths dream of living in Lagos and never hold their state governors accountable.

People have built houses on drainage channels, many do not give room for Government / canal setbacks. Lots of Govt drainage / canal infrastructures have been vandalized by vandals, environmental infractions i.e. improper disposal of waste such as dumping of refuse or waste in gutters or drainages during rainfall, waste generated and dumped on the road & gutters as a result of street tradings etc results into flooding of this nature. Lagos no doubt is a coastal city with aquatic splendour but our estate developers needs to do the needful. They should at all times obey the environmental rules and laws while building their estates. They should obtain building permits before embarking on building and obey the terms given to them on such permits. They should also do background check on lands they intend to build on and obtain drainage permit. There is also need to conduct Environmental impact assessment & soil tests on the lands they intend to build in. Above all, Govt should intensify efforts on enlightenment and advocacy. People need to be educated on all forms of environmental infractions. While Government itself should desist from and discourage Land reclamation. Water bodies should remain as water bodies and Land as Land.
