I love this scene. I wish that I had seen this movie on a wide sweeping screen. When the Queen walks down the grand room, the choral music playing in the background, it captures so perfectly the pomp of the British court. By the way, Jane Lapotaire is such a brilliant actress. I love the scene where she is at the point of bursting out in tears for executing her cousin, but she captures herself when the Spanish ambassador coughs. What a nuanced actress!
Helena Bonham Carter is truly one of the best actress i have ever seen in my life x
You can tell that Mary didn't want to kill Jane or Guildford. She was about to cry in the scene where she found out she was finally dead.

For the record, Elizabeth would not have been so regretful. She was a cold realist who stopped at nothing to protect her interests.

@@nassauguy48 I don't know where you are coming from, but it is really isn't accurate of what you are saying at all. Elizabeth had a better reason to execute Mary Stuart since she was actually guilty of participating in conspiracy where Jane's father commited treason not her. In addition, Elizabeth nearly the same amount of time that Mary did signing the warrant. However, she withdrew the warrant, but her spymaster, Walsingham still retrieved the warrant and executed anyway without her permission.
when she cant find the block it breaks my heart
My mother and I would watch this together when I was little. It was her favorite movie. When she died when I was 17, I asked for that passage from Plato to be engraved on her headstone. It still brings such tears to my eyes to hear it said in this movie when poor Jane is beheaded, her last thoughts of her love..... *sniffle* damn onions!

Jane never really loved the jerk she was forced to marry. Her last words were Bible prayers.
I've always felt bad for Jane. She, because of the time in which she lived, was a pawn to the male political roles around her and she died because of it. She would have been considered an intellectual by Elizabeth, had she lived.

Kelly Tardivo Yes it was. Elizabeth wanted to forgive her but she had to obey the law. She realized that to rule, she could not rule with the heart, but by law. She saw what happened when you ruled by the heart or by 'absolute right'. Her father and sister were proof of that.
@nassauguy48

+Tina Chandler Well, her mother was just as culpable, so let us not blame only the men. In fact, her mother was the most cruel to her. Elizabeth wanted Jane out of the way just as much as Mary, as this would have compromised her own claim to the throne. Moreover, there were over 4,000 Catholics, half of them innocent Irish peasants, who were slaughtered under Elizabeth, so she is hardly the innocent and blushing queen. These were ALL absolute monarchs.
What a tragedy!! Rest in peace Queen Jane and Gilford
Well, I really enjoyed the movie. Jane's final scene was so intense! Helena's acting was just on point. Plus, she was so young! I can barely recognize her voice hahaha
One of my favorite scenes in the movie, where Mary puts on her game face and prepares to meet her husband. Such fine acting and the perfect moment to start the awesome music.

Mary was a true princess, queen and professional.
I love the irony of this ending, where everyone who was TRULY guilty of planning to overthrow Mary is there, alive and welcome at her court. At least Jane's mother looks a little bit guilty and abashed, though. Finally, shame at last instead of shamelessness.

Honestly the only deaths that happened that really had it coming for what they did to Jane were Lord Dudley and Jane's father. I still do feel like Jane's mother should had some reprecussions since she was more guilty in this than Jane.

I think it's a crime that this beautiful musical score was never available for purchase.
I agree. That score at the end is amazing. It truly captures the pomp and the regalia of the moment as the British queen is walking down the corridor of her court.
Trivia: Jane Lapotaire plays Queen Mary, she was also Eleanor of Acquitaine in the BBC mini series "The Devils Crown". She was also reunited with Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Alice of Greece in the Crown. She has tremendous acting chops playing Royalty. Great ending musical score too.
Thanks for uploading this movie. It's always been one of my favourite films.

The film (obviously) took a number of historical liberties, and not just with their relationship. But all that said, there is plenty pathos in executing a 16 year old girl - she really did struggle to find the block after she was blindfolded, by all accounts.

I know this comment is a year old, but there is actually evidence that suggests that Jane and Guildford did come to love each other. Yes, they were pawns of their parents and forced to marry each other. I even read one account where Jane had bruises on her face during their wedding ceremony because she was literally beaten into compliance. But after they were married Jane wrote about how much she loved Guildford. And when they were arrested Guildford didn’t abandon her or sell her out like his father did. She refused to see him before they were executed, but only because she thought it would be more painful for them both if they saw each other before they died. And she had a strong reaction when she saw them bring his body back. Accounts vary, but I believe they found commonality with each other and had some happiness with each other in the short time they had.

Thanks for the upload, I'd been looking for this film for a long time. Loved it just as much as I did at 10 years old.
I've just started reading a biography of Lady Jane Grey - it brought back memories of the film (which I saw quite a few years ago). I did a youtube search on the off-chance and have just watched it again! It's a great film and the music is wonderful.
Thank you for posting this great film.I saw it years ago and forgotten how good it was. What a great Queen and King Jane and Guildford would have made.
Just as great as I remembered. Thank you for sharing!!!!
OMH, this is a really good film, I loved every second of it. I nearly cried at the end. Helena was excellent! Thanks for posting it! x

Thanks so much for uploading this movie. It was wonderful. I must agree that Frances is such a hateful woman! She doesn't care of what happens to her daughter. If I remember it correctly, she pleaded to Mary I to pardon her husband but she didn't appeal for Jane. And when her husband died, she shocked everyone by remarrying a man beneath her rank. Spiteful woman!

+Brittney Pinzon The movie is very historically accurate, with one major difference; she and her husband, although not the bitter enemies that some historians wish to argue, were not anything near the lovers portrayed - I do love this portrayal!
I love that sassy side-eye that Mary gives Jane's mom! She's just like "mmhm."
This film always reduces me to tears!!! Love it!!
I always felt bad for Jane Grey. She was simply a pawn just because her mother was the daughter of Charles Brandon and Mary Tudor, niece to Henry the 8th. The real conspirators were the people who wanted Mary out of their country's throne, but Jane wanted to bring Catholics and Protestants together in peace. Now Jane lost her head, and those who died are gone too, and others who would remain alive will live with the shame that they let greed rob them of their loved ones.

Jane Lapotaire is one of the finest British performers around, trained as a Shakesperean actress, she portrays Mary Tudor so well. Mary was the kindest of the brutal Tudors, a troubled, well-meaning woman, Lapotaire is able to convey this to the audience.

Always like that scene at the end where Queen Mary is emotional and the courtier (?) clears his throat, she sucks it in, straightens up and walks to her destiny.
@KDVx3 You are absolutely right. I also felt bad for Mary. Mary wasn't the monster that she's been depicted. They say she was really a well-meaning, misunderstood, perhaps misguided, kind hearted woman. For instance, I read somewhere that Mary would sometimes dress herself as a commoner and knock on some poor family's door to speak to them. Considering the enormous gulf that existed between monarch and peasant, that's an incredible gesture.
In the end game I just want to thank janethequene for up loading this amazing movie. There is so many interesting comments on this movie and all are valid. This movie is one of my favourites.

She was double royalty, unlike Elizabeth and Edward.
This movie is a great costume drama. The Tudor clothing is so accurate. Mary did dress that way with the large sleeves, headdress & jewels. And it has such a moody feel that fits so well. It was obviously filmed in old castles, no cheap Hollywood sets here. By the way, I love the pageantry and pomp as Queen Mary walks out the door. Even though the current Queen of England lives a life of royal pomp, I believe that it pales in comparison to the pomp that Queen Mary or any other Tudor enjoyed.

I am not certain if the revealed earrings were correct for that time. The fashion for women was to wear headdresses that covered their ears.
It's quite clever that Elizabeth Tudor is not in this film. It's almost as if she hangs back in the shadows, the key survivor of this terrible period, and the one who will change everything, as Jane was supposed to.
Thank you for the correction. Yes, of course I meant "heretic." I don't have any romantic notions of Mary, however, I refuse to take her out of the context of the times in which she lived, and I don't paint her with broad brush strokes. Dogmatic, religious bigot? Intolerance and religious bigotry were found on both sides of the reformation. Why single Mary out? Didn't the protestants destroy churches and monasteries, expel catholic priests, forbid masses and, YES, execute clergy?
beautiful film, Thank you for sharing.
3) On the contrary, Mary's overriding conviction in life that saw her through thick and thin was her unshakable belief in her faith. She must have undoubtedly felt that she was damning her soul by naming her sister, a "hectic," as her rightful heir. This proves more than anything else that she put her realm and not her religious faction first.
what a great movie! Its saddening to see what people do for what they dont know.
Jane you have inspire me. Rest in peace
Yes, I only recently found out the true meaning. All my life I thought that it was just an innocent nursery rhyme. Still, I feel sorry for Mary. She is probably the saddest chapter in British history. I don't believe there has been a British monarch who has suffered as much as her. Though misguided and full of folly, she truly loved her subjects and wanted what was best for her country, and in fact, when she lost Calais she said, "When I am dead, you will find Calais lying on my heart"
Guildford was killed with one stroke of the axe, after which his body was conveyed on a cart to the Tower chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. Watching the scene from her window, Jane exclaimed: "Oh, Guildford, Guildford!". He was buried in the chapel with Jane who was dead within an hour after him.
in mary's defense she didnt actually want to execute her but she still did mary actually was quite merciful at the start of her reign
Many people regretted not supporting Lady Jane as Queen. Mad Bloody Mary was an unmitigated disaster; a zealous murderer and simply, a Tudor Psycho.

Jane was like Edward, a fierce and uncompromising evangelical. Neither one of them could even tolerate Anglicans. I fear that both would have been the causes of so many executions had they lived to adulthood. By the way, Elizabeth killed far more people than did Mary.
Life is good, talking of these things can be if desired a wonderful learning curve for all, God Bless

You think your the only one? All the girls in my CLASS-including myself-were crying her eyes out!
How ridiculous that all these episodes here in the queue have all been blocked so it automatically sends everything back to the scene of when she is beheaded... that is the only part here and the brief aftermath . Thanks for the upload too bad it was blocked due to copyright
Quite the magnificent soundtrack in this film
David Starkey and Antonia Fraser both discuss these figures. Starkey goes into gory detail as to how an entire house of Carthusian monks were slowly disemboweled simply for refusing to turn over money (for taxes) that they had raised from baking and selling bread to be given (the money that is) to the local impoverished villagers whose lot was worsened by the Poor Laws enacted under Elizabeth. Another author writes of over 50 Irish boys being slaughtered in a rebellious village.
I realize that, though one would never deduce this from the final scene of the movie! However, Frances obviously cared more about her husband than about her daughter. (She really did not have to, as she had far more rank and power than Henry Grey). Some historians question as to whether she was as mean to Jane as is widely believed. She did marry again, to a man much younger whose job was to tend her horses, and had children by him, though all died in infancy. Frances died the year after Mary.
I wanted to see this film for ages it portrays the relationship between Guiliford and Jane in contrast to Alison Weir's Innocent Traiter which is a great fictional biography based upon reality
Elizabeth was very good at feigning ignorance or claiming how her orders were misconstrued after the fact. Catherine Parr commented on this when she did not believe for one minute that Elizabeth was a helpless victim during her romps with Thomas Seymour way back in 1548. (Even though Catherine forgave both of them). She also had an excellent public relations crew in the form of the writers of her day: Marlowe, Shakespeare, Spencer, and so on.
Yup. there was a bloody good reason why she was called "Bloody Mary"
@nassauguy48
3 жыл бұрын
@Dave Bronstein Elizabeth executed over 4,000 Catholics.
But you must also consider that Elizabeth's "astuteness" is partly due in no small measure to the lessons that she learned from her older sister's mistakes. For instance, Elizabeth never got married--not out of virtuousness--but because she saw how the masses reacted to Mary's marriage. This perpetuated the legend of the "virgin queen," who was compared to the Virgin Mary and who was wedded to her kingdom. What a legend!
Surely it is the sacred duty of adults to protect the generations that follow them, never to use them for any agenda!
It's interesting how protocol when addressing and meeting an English monarch has remained the same while evolving. For instance, just like in this movie where Queen Mary is addressed as Ma'am, you are still supposed to address the current queen in the same manner. Regarding the bow and curtesy. Men are still supposed to bow and woman curtesy, but nobody does it now to the extreme that it was done in the 16th century.

Isn’t that world history in general
Among the nobles and the royals, there were so many cases of family members being executed by decree, and it was literally a case of "Oh, nothing personal, it is all just politics". Family members would still closely associate with the royals who ordered the execution of one of their own, and in fact, often remained friends and allies. We see how Queen Mary welcomed Frances Grey back to court despite the fact that Frances' husband and daughter had been executed by royal decree. Children were merely pawns on the chess board, and marriages were nothing more than contracts.
I love the pomp and pageantry when the queen walks down the hall of that great palace. I'm sure that's not a set, but at actual castle. Does anyone know where that was filmed? Would that be Hampton Court where Queen Mary actually lived? I wonder how the pomp of the current queen would stack up against a Tudor monarch? I'm sure for instance that Queen Mary had many more ladies-in-waiting than Elizabeth II, but as England is a much richer country today than it was under the Tudor Dynasty [when it was actually a poor country, the War of the Roses had devastated England], perhaps Queen Elizabeth II can afford more glitter?

@mrsamoa69 Yes! I love that music. In fact, that's my favorite scene in the movie, and that's what I love about British costume dramas--the fine detail! They are just so well made. This was obviously filmed in a real castle, not some Hollywood studio set up to look like a castle, and the costumes are true-to-life and the music so full of pomp and majesty that it exquisitely conveys the march of a monarch.
@KDVx3 She was 37 when she took the throne, very much too old in that time to be able to have children and have them live or herself die in child bed. Mary was going to spare her and send her and Guilford into exile. You are right when you said her father sealed her fate. He stated his child needed him, yes she did but not in the way he thought she did. Women back then were pawns, sons who were 2nd or 3rd born were not much better off. It was a sad thing.
sensational movie; so sentimental. can anyone, please, tell me the name of this piece of music? i just SO LOVE IT. thank you :)
Elizabeth was arrested as a result of the 2nd uprising (Wyatt'sr ebellion)and arrived in London on,I think ,the day Jane was executed. Elizabeth thought she would be next. When she was taken to the Tower she was anxious to know if Jane's scaffold had been taken down yet.
