Lady Bird [2017] Reaction | FIRST TIME WATCHING

Hey YTubers,
Man oh man. This one was not what I expected. I was laughing, I was near tears and I was yelling at my screen.
I think on some level it was a bit hard for me to swallow the mother because my personal experience is so different.
I can only speak as a daughter and not as a parent while watching this. I did however, think it was an great story about the complexities of mother-daughter relationships.

What makes the mother so frustrating is that she has empathy for everyone but Lady Bird. She can act better, but she's so concerned about money and social status that she lets it poison her relationship with her daughter.

I think that the nature of their relationship is due to her not understanding when she's being cold, because that's her genuine personality due to the abuse she went through. She loves her and she does want to understand her, but she reminds her of herself too much. Sometimes she's genuinely trying to be hurtful because that's the trauma response and you can always tell she regrets it immediately afterwards, but sometimes she feels like she's giving her genuine criticisms so she can "be her best self" but she can't comprehend that's not what Lady Bird wants from her. Then again, Lady Bird is also very quick to anger and is also a bit of a smart ass, so of course they butt heads. Her mom needs therapy (and less work shifts) and Lady Bird needs to learn how to communicate I understand the frustration towards her mom and giving Lady Bird the benefit of the doubt because she is a child (which is the correct thing to do) but sometimes abuse victims struggle a lot to understand what their children need from them that isn't taking her of their monetary needs and putting food on their plates

I know this video is a year old, but I'm just now seeing it.... I think Lady Bird's mother butted heads with her because her daughter probably reminds her of herself when she was young. And I'm guessing Mom probably made all the same mistakes that teenagers make and she thinks she can save Lady Bird from going through all that by pushing her to succeed. She's not realizing that like most teenagers... you can't just tell them things and expect them to get it. They have to fall down and learn for themselves sometimes. For Lady Bird's part, her mother is too strict, too rigid and never lets up.... but she's not really understanding that mom was young once too and probably knows all the mistakes she's going to make before she does. With Dad out of a job, Mom also has to be the responsible adult who holds the whole family together... that's a lot of pressure. Two strong personalities who are more alike than they are different... they will tend to take their frustrations out on each other. At least, that's what I got from their relationship.

I loved your reaction to this, and I agree when you said that the mother said all the wrong things at the wrong times. Some of the scenes/arguments were kind of triggering for me because it brought back memories for me of how my own mother was growing up. Obviously it wasn't exactly like depicted in the movie but it was close enough that I really empathized with the daughter so much. Like yes, I also think the daughter said some wrong things too but I feel like most of those were in the moment reacting to something horrible said to her and she seems like at the point we see her in the movie that she was never really taught the "correct" ways to communicate her feelings, or at least the examples we are shown from her mother are not right so she was lashing out in a response to the hurt her mother was causing. I don't plan on being a mother myself because I'm afraid I would end up doing to my own child too much of what was done to me, but I would hope that I at least wouldn't make my child think of themselves as a failure or that I think they are a failure. And I really strongly feel like that is most of what the mother did in this movie... It was heartbreaking to watch but it also felt so real. So even though it was heavy topics and hard to stomach I think it was very well done. I really enjoyed your insights, and honestly your reaction to some things said and scenes helped me feel validated in that saying those things to someone especially your own child is not ok. I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you for that and helping a random internet stranger to feel seen.

wdym for “that’s not how it works” for being vegan and wearing vintage leather lol that’s exactly how it works, you either don’t buy new products with animals or only use old products with animals that are old and are already out in the world so it makes no sense to not use them because they’re already there so you get as much use out of them as possible

it’s the moral principle LMAO. what person who truly cares about animals would wear a byproduct of their corpse as fashion? idc about the technicalities… it’s the moral principle that the content creator was speaking on. if you truly cared about animals enough to go vegan as a personal choice, you wouldn’t parade their carcass around and call it “fashion”
