I used to have one in South Africa. I LOVED IT! I got to break down in all kinds of interesting places. The front shock absorber mounting broke so I just removed the shocks at the side of the road. The 30l petrol tank was way too small to be practical. The window winders worked backwards. 1st and 3rd gear changed the presets on the radio. Mine had a 5-speed gearbox but the 5th gear had been disabled by the factory as they broke all the time. Now that I live in Californa there is no chance of getting one again - but I still dream of it.

Just for additional information: The Bronto model comes with alot of basic upgrades to the offroad capabilities, while still being comfortable in the suburbs, and the new body kit is very sturdy. We took one to an actual offroad event where most professional cars are lifted 3 times the height and were able to clear all non submerging obstacles(talking about obstacles that literally half submerge cars with 100cm lift kits). We also took it on a drive through a special type of dry swamp that exists in Finland consisting mostly of red sand, very thick moss and thin woodland where you can mostly maneuver in bethween. We tested alot of vertical climbs that were way beyond my comfort zone, as it was a brand new car, yet it easily climbed its way up even the most loose sandy hills, while i was panicing my ass off burning clutch. Edit about Ladas in general after reading some comments: There is a lot of price disparity mostly due to taxing, culture and origin of the vehicles. When it comes to older Ladas there is a russian and export models, export models having actual paint on them for example(not a joke). If Ladas had strong presense in a country from 70-90s, its very likely they have additional value, possibly even decent club activities. And then theres the one everyone loves: taxing! you can pretty much 2.5x the russian price as far as most EU countries go when importing a car these days, turning a 7000€ car in russia to 20000€+ in EU, plus whatever the costs a reseller needs aswell. There was very recently some additional EU regulation changes aswell, which might prohibit Bronto, Vesta and X-ray models from being sold, until they are tested for new regulations, which is a subject on its own. Older Niva models should be fine tho.

@@stefanstefan2105 I understand for some countries and regions the prices might be expensive or end up even more expensive due to distance, but locally we atleast (at the time) originally calculated that if we buy a blank niva and simply buy the bronco parts, it will be roughly 2000€ in rubles before tax(For tire profile and bronto specific parts for body and suspension, not interior or electrics which are simply better model accessories anyway). Even so, i would say the plastic types used for the body kit are a good design choice as they are similar to what you would find in french cars, which are flexible and bendy to insane levels, so most paintshops would be able to fix/repair affordably. Also they are mostly glued on their own brackets or literally on the car, so there is very little problems with little plastic holders or brackets being permanently damaged.

@@stefanstefan2105 You're over-estimating the electric upgrades :D, even on new ones only updates to electrics are related to new headlights or interior lighting and even then they are mostly operated by closed box circuits that cost less then 5€, and there usually is DIY guides to even build your own. The general differences betheen the models after '95 are more subtle differences on the surface or adjustments to certain anglings for suspension parts, the base core of the car hasnt changed much. Even as far as the full electronic harness goes, there is only 2 models, before '94 and after, where newer only has optional plugs for more "modern" lights and washers. If i remember correctly air conditioner is separate standalone harness, so it has no effect on the actual electrics needed used by the car. What i found mostly troublesome was to replace my own '85 Niva's specific instrument electrics/small parts as it is really hard to find replacements, tho most of these are just "nice original things" that could be replaced with aftermarket buttons/switches/clocks/screens.

Park in the mudd on the side of the road or go on the high curb that a normal car couldn't climb. And these cars have a high fuel consumption. Obviously the research was poorly done.

I remember similar story when they shipped a batch of diesel locomotives (of all things!) to an American grain company to pay for their grain. First car I got to drive was an 02 Lada niva. Man its a blast, despite having no low end torque and about as much power as my 56 y/o Volvo p210. I still find it fun to drive on gravel roads at high speed. Also you really don't want to drive the niva at +60mph, I found 55 to be a comfortable cruising speed.

It is simple - yes. But prepare to spend (or should I say waste?) time under that thing regularly. Speaking from experience of my friend who sells darn things for living. And don't forget really weak stock engine. It is only good for swinging by your local 24/7 to buy another bottle of vodka when you run dry (if you live in some rural area where normal roads are non existent and there is like one store for the whole community). Other purpose of this vehicle is to go fishing/hunting with your slav friends and get wasted on the spot via already mentioned vodka.

I fully agree with your analysis concerning the LADA NIVA. Unfortunately because of the constraints on CO2 emission limitation, this car is now unavailable in France (where I am) and in several other neighbor European countries (Belgium, Italy, Spain,...). Very nice and interesting video with relevant analysis. Many thanks.

Im russian but currently live in europe and went around it and I was extremely surprised to see Nive everywhere. I get it why it is possible to see this car in Bulgaria, Greece, but seeing it in Austria, Italy, France and Netherlansa putted me in shock. I guess thats actually a good car if people from this economy strong countries buy it.
