"La Volta" for Elizabeth I.

Музыка

The volta is an anglicised name for a Renaissance dance for couples from the later Renaissance. This dance was associated with the galliard and done to the same kind of music. Its main figure consisted of a turn and lift in a sort of closed position, which could be done either to the right or to the left. It is also called La volta, Volta, Volte. Spelling variants include la volta and levolto; its name is la volte in French and la volta in Italian.
Volta version composed by David Hirschfelder
Detailed instructions for lavoltas were written by Thoinot Arbeau. These instructions are open to some interpretation, but seem to indicate something like the following.
The dance begins with a galliard. Then the couple makes a transition to a closed position. The leader (the man, according to period custom) lets go of his partner's hand and takes hold of her below her busk with one hand, and places the other hand on her back above the far hip. The follower places her near hand on top of her partner's near shoulder. Now the leader is facing his partner while she faces to one side; both will do the turn with forward steps, and both step with the same foot at the same time.

the volta was considered very daring due to the fact that the lady was lifted of the floor in a turning motion and thereby revealing a bit more of her legs and undercoats than was proper :) The dance came to France first and its belived that it was Anne Boleyn that tought it to Henry Viii.

I have actually danced it, years ago when I was at university. I belonged to a Renaissance dance club. You need a busk, a sort of corset thing, so your boyfriend can lift you from the back. It’s a lot of fun!

Yes, another like her. She was in truth a very good monarch, who had over 200 people killed during her reign. Her predecessor Mary had about 150 people killed during hers, but their father, Henry VIII, wins the prize: he had over 60,000 people executed during his reign. Oddly, it was the Catholic Mary who Protestant England called "bloody".

Beth was likely the most important person in human history so far. The entire world would be so different today if it had not been for her. Spain would in fact have occupied England if not for Elizabeth Tudor & her people of that time. How Europe would have ended with Russia centuries later isn't known just as how the new world wouldn't be much of a hint of English. Good or bad, she changed history forever more than anyone else. England, Germany, America & so many other nations have gone to hell in the last 30 years since so called cold war ended (it never ended). An Elizabeth Tudor aka Elizabeth R aka Beth aka the Virgin Queen aka Gloriana sure would fix the problems if she were Queen today. I do know this song was her favorite. Even with very few original documents left, there is proof this was her big song. It's amazing how this song has lasted so many hundreds of years.

Given the large number of period voltas available in recordings, it is hard to understand why this modern adaptation was used.

this is not the adaptation of period Volta, but newly composed (1998)

I always wondered what the actual piece of music for the volta was. I've watched that dance scene over and over. They acted like it was very racy, but this seems to be a very sedate piece of music.

yeah, an i reckon she had a sense of humour, as she called one of aids 'Pigmy' as a joke - as he was short - true story that. An she looks kind'a sweet in this picture ! mann, if i had a time machine...

VC YT In her day she was pretty but women were butt ugly then. Plucking your hairline a few inches higher, making your forehead so tall you looked bald? Inbreeding with your first cousins to the point of a recessed chin and beak nose? And the beautiful skin; putting powdered lead to make your skin nice and white then putting on more lead to cover the lead poisoning that has turned your face spongy? Very pretty lol.

@@VCYT I think Robert Cecil (son of Sir William Cecil, who also happened to be her aide) was referred to as pygmy.

monny013 No, the one in the picture is Elizabeth when she was a princess at about age 13-14, whose mother was Anne Boleyn. Though Bess did wear her mother's ring for a good deal of her life, so it's possible that she had more of her mother's jewelery to wear as well.
