That was by far the greatest father/husband ever put to film. He gave his wife the greatest gift she could ever wish for, it wasn’t just the survival of their child, but also the preservation of their child’s innocence from the realities of the Holocaust. It may have cost him his life, but he at least died with a full heart knowing he protected his child.

One day, my Italian teacher told us we would be watching a movie, and let us choose which one. She asked if we wanted to cry or to laugh. We all answered : "come on, try to make us cry", on a tone of challenge. So we watched "la vita è bella". We all cried and she laughed in the end. This movie is a heartbreaker every time I watch it

This guy was no fool.... he KNEW he was being marched to his death. What was most important to him was to not traumatize his child. This is bravery the likes of which is extremely rare. He was 1000% MAN in every sense of the term. No bravado, no ego... just a very good, humble man who has his priorities in exactly the right place.

Bicycle Thieves and Life is Beautiful are among the best films ever made 💚

I watched this in Italian class. The most memorable scene for me is when the son said he didn’t want to take a shower. There’s just so much irony to it. Neither of them knew the true meaning of "taking a shower" at at death camp.

The most common foreign language classes in America are Spanish and French. At the high school I went to there was an Italian class. It was taught by an old guy who born in Italy but emigrated to America. When he retired in 2018, the Italian class ceased to exist.

@@christopherparrisjr.3146 Such a pity .... once Italian was the second language spoken by NY population since there were so many inmigrants from Italy in the USA. Now I think there are hardly any ... in a sense it's good since that means they do not need to inmigrate anymore, at least to another continent as they stay in Europe as European Community citizens. It's better that way, if needed, they can go home by bus or train on a long weekend or holidays ,,, it's much harder when an intercontinental plane ticket has to be bought.

The saddest part to me when rewatching this film is when he plays Offenbach over the loud speaker. We don't know it at the time of our first watch, but we know after that this is the last time he "communicates" directly to his wife. It's a final goodbye love song, so to speak. A man of so many words throughout the film hold his last conversation with his wife through an instrumental piece.

Back when I first saw this movie I wondered if this movie was a true story because the narrator said it was his story. I kept looking and I later found out it was a true story and is why it got made in the first place. The real life boy was Rubino Romeo Salmoni and wrote a book titled "In the End, I Beat Hitler." The book was made into the movie.The real story was three brothers in the camp. Only one survived.

@@EIGHTBITPUNK Apparently it was. There are other Jewish survivors that after seeing the movie saw a strong similarity to their own life experience. It appears the idea of fathers or mothers telling their kids it was all an elaborate game wasn't unique. Parents did whatever they could to shield their children from the harsh reality. Many of the untold stories were unsuccessful. This one just so happens to be a successful one.

that's it. The movie is inspired by the real story of Rubino Romeo Salmonì, who survived Auschwitz. He is Guido, but there is not babies i think. The point is that Salmonì was very optimism and he had a playful temperament during the imprisonment.

It's not the same story it's loosely based on it. In real life the dad survived and told his stories to his son.

I ... I truly think ... that the most powerful and meaningful scene in the film, is when Roberto winks at Joshua. It is his last greeting to his son, not melancholy farewell, but a hopeful and playful farewell ... Pure magic.

This movie is a masterpiece. Benigni was able to make the spectators see the Holocaust with a different point of view, from the eyes of a father who does everything he can to save his kid from being traumatized forever by what happened in those camps. We are the kid in this movie, the freedom we have today was gifted to us through the sacrifice of so many people. Oscar 100% deserved

I'm Italian, and I live in Vergaio (a little city in Tuscany, where Roberto live too), sometime I see him walk on the road. He is so simple person, so human, kind, funny. All you see in "La vita è bella" is a mirror of Roberto's soul. I hope you'll see the other films of him: "La tigre e la neve", "Non ci resta che piangere" (his first film) and "Johnny Stecchino" before all the others, and that you see also his show about Dante's Inferno, amazing, filmed in Santa Croce Square in Florence, under Dante's statue.

Every Oscar this film won was well deserved! I still remember Robertos' fun acceptance speech from that night. Great movie, glad it found a way to your hearts : )

I watched the movie with my family and we all cried. When Roberto won the Oscar we all chanted for him when he started jumping on the stage stairs like a super hero.

Italy has produced many of the best films in the history of cinema. Bella reaction again, girls.

Most of the best movies were actually made in the rest of the world (or by foreigners filming in Hollywood), movies that changed the history of cinema at their time. Hollywood is what it is now thanks to those masterpieces, copying and remaking them, or following the new style they invetend.

46:40 we ALL felt like that the first time we watched this movie. It also was a kind of beautiful (not gross, not vulgar or grotesque, but delicate and respectful) way to give our hero farewell.

The son in this movie also played the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator. Although in Gladiator he was the son of the Spaniard, his only line in Gladiator was in Italian "Mama i soldati!" - "Mama the soldiers!"

I am Italian and I have watched this film many times. Even watching your video I cried. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Roberto Benigni is brilliant!

A special film, because it mixes the tragedy of the holocaust with the comedy of Roberto Begnigni. I usually never cry, but here was not possible. Then in Italian it is even more enjoyable because the speeches make more sense.

Really nice to see a European movie for a change - yet obviously successful and popular, in its own way. Watching the second half of the film take a much darker turn, after its more romantic first half, and particularly the twists of comedy and tragedy the final minutes, was (as the Homies girls witnessed) really masterful cinema.

When I saw this movie for the first time I cried all my tears. As a 37 years old man I wish, if I ever had a son or a daughter (which I hope), I could do 1/10 of what this man has done for his son. What an example! Greetings from Italy, ladies...

At the start, when you said this was supposed to be a good film to watch at Christmas time, with no word about the Holocaust, I thought "Oh boy, you are in for a surprise..." and I guess you missed that the guy with two sons at the beginning of the film had named them Adolfo and Benito, the first names of Hilter and Mussolini. Plus when Roberto Benigni was performing on the tables at the school, it was all about making fun of the Italian fascists. Mussolini was the original fascist, and it was Hitler who followed his example. This was a great film though, and when the film won the Oscar for Best International Film in 1999, Roberto Benigni's reaction was famous (he also won the Oscar for Best Leading actor, beating Tom Hanks for 'Saving Private Ryan', and the film also won the Oscar for Best Musical Score). kzread.info/dash/bejne/apeItJifm5vMotY.html

Really excellent choice. I cried a lot in 1998 in theatre. I recommend you three films I like a lot : A River Runs Through It, directed by Robert Redford with Redford and Brad Pitt, yes it's him ; The Lives of Others (German speaking), directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, tears guaranteed ; The Iron Giant, directed by Brad Bird, an animation film for fun.

We watched this film in my Italian film class (it was even mentioned in our text books...which we had to read when we were in the middle of watching it for homework and was spoiled about the ending!) It is such an interesting movie! It goes from this bright sunny happy scene to someplace very dark and sad and you can even see since the very beginning what was happening in Italy throughout WWII. Small things like posters, what was happening in schools, and even when Guido and his buddy arrives and drives through a parade. My favorite part was when he was praying for certain "miracles" to happen in front of Dora! She stands there, thinking nothing is going to happen, then just drops her jaw when it does🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

La vita e Bella is another level of emotion

As an Italian, paradoxically, I saw this film very late. In fact, at 17 I still didn't know that one of the most awarded and discussed films from my country in the world still slipped through my fingers, without my realizing it. When I saw him, I understood why, until then, I never made contact with him: I was not ready. In fact, I could never understand the real meaning of what the film wants to tell and convey. Fortunately, seeing him several times, I learned that this film makes "comedy" a story of courage, or the other way around, if you prefer 😊. Many accuse him of historical revisionism, of treating the subject in a misguided and false way, only to move through a softened and trivialized history. Instead, I find that this process is the vehicle of a strong message, which certainly has less impact than the reality of things, yet no less strong on a human level. I am very happy that you too, now, have seen and experienced this film in first person 😁, and that you have shared it with us all ☺️. I hope he can have transmitted to you, even if only in part, the great emotion that is this story of a father's sacrifice towards his son. The emotions that, I believe, each of us feels following you do not come so much from the films you watch, but more from you 😁☺️. True and transparent, what more could we want 😆.

28:30 this is a joke that is hard to translate. "Punti" in italian means both points and stitches, bartolomeo says "I got 20 points" meaning "I got 20 stitches". It's just a happy coincidence just like the hat one and the key one back when Guido was seducing Dora

I remember watching this movie when I was a little kid with my parents, at the end we were all crying. Back then I didn't know anything about WW2 and the nazis, a few years later when I learned, it got a lot more shocking knowing people were capable of such horror things :( . The movie is amazing, the main actor is fantastic so is the little boy.

also nicoletta and roberto (the two main characters) are such a cute couple 🤍 they have been married for 30 years now and just a few months ago he made a beautiful speech for a prize he won and talked about how much she inspired him & how much he loves her

I had to watch this movie in middle school for a class. I literally sat in front of my laptop crying for 20 minutes i think - could've been more. I don't think I can watch it again, it's very heart wrenching

Il Postino was the first Italian movie I ever watched and it also won a Best Foreign Language Oscar.

This movie was my favorite of the year that I was born: 1998. I can say this film was possible because of success of Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and very others about Second World War. An interesting fact: you can choose to watch it like a child (believing the games that Guido invented) or like and adult (keeping alive like himself).

Bè, aspetta, questo è sicuramente un gran film, ma definirlo il migliore film italiano "by far" mi pare un tantino esagerato... Non dimentichiamoci dei capolavori di Sergio Leone o di Monicelli solo per citarne alcuni...

It is a tragic film with many pieces of comedy. When he arrives at the Nazi concentration camp with his son, he makes him believe throughout the second part of the film that it is a game of points and prizes to hide the horrors of the Holocaust from him. Roberto Benigni is the best Italian actor and director in the world who has been able to tell this tragic story

The tank at the end (first prize) was American. It was a brave choice to make a comedy film about the Holocaust.

Jerry Lewis tried to do it in the 70s

I'm Italian and I don't know how many times I've seen and reviewed this film. I can't think of a more deserved Oscar. A brilliant film, practically 2 films in one: the first time in which Benigni's comic genius gives the maximum and a second time in which to make what was more than a tragedy pass for a game, for the love of his son, not to let him experience that horror. You have been good at immersing yourself completely in the world of "Life is Beautiful"

I’m a person, which due to his depressing pass, current life, loneliness, mind in the past, sacrifing or losing all for others yet not getting appreciated, the abuse, the loss of my “brother” made me emotionless. Nothing teared me up, but this was insane close. Just how it started as a Comedy and a “Prince” who would sacrifice himself as Hero, how he took it all as a Joke just to hide the truth from his son until his death, was all so depressing. When he turned around, staring at the boy, while walking as a Casper until his end. Wrst thing is sometimes your sacrifices cannot be appreciated even if it’s mosty for their good. That their unawares and lack of knowledge of the Situation protects them like in this case. As if his death was for nothing, yet it was the only thing he coud do. It started with a comedic romantic prince doing everything to win the princess’ heart to a hero, sacrificing his life. He died with a smile, but this and “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” will always be my favourite dramas, which are my favourite movie genre. Also I’m German 50% and lived there, ehich is why I lost everything also my father yet hate then

To think that Spielberg went after Benigni very publicly for this film, accusing him of downplaying and exploiting the tragedy of the Holocaust.

You should watch Roberto bengini winning the Oscar for this role. It’s pretty spot on

Watching reactions on KZread to different movies that I know a lot about, I have realized that, as much as there are movies that have always moved me a lot (and this is one of them), and as much as I have also cried at some one of them, is not the same as seeing the emotional reaction (and now I'm not only talking about crying, but also joy, surprise, terror,...) of another person. And seeing a single person get emotional (Ellie, for example, is an "easy-tearing" person), crying... well you say "bah, ok, I'm fine, my soul shrinks a little, but ok, controlled ". But seeing you all FOUR at the same time...🤣🤣 I've always been very empathetic, but with something like this, empathy skyrockets. 😅Especially watching Michelle, who doesn't cry often, and especially Viki, who makes one of the cutest faces I've ever seen when crying. And yet... it's more beautiful to see you laugh.

I have loved Roberto Benigni ever since I was a child. In the eighties Italian TV was quite boring, rigid and formal. Every time Benigni was invited as a guest it was like a storm of laughter, he would run and jump everywhere, touching people, saying loudly all the silly jokes his colleagues were afraid to say (sex-related for the most part). He was completely unpredictable and wild. He made some good comedies by then, and some others were still to come. He was a natural born comedian. And then he came out with this movie, which was totally unexpected of him, and gave a new twist to his career and another dimension to the man as he was known. It was a huge sensation at the time.

*According to me 3 most heartbreaking scenes ever in world cinema.* 😭😭 *(1). (**45:56** To **46:59**) On Life is beautiful, And When He Said In Narration Voice - "This is my Story, this is the sacrifice my father made, this was his gift to me" - Listening This Line Everyone Will Cry.* *(2). in Movie Schindler's List, In Ending Scene when the people saved by Schindler gather on the tracks, and Oskar breaks down in tears at the horror of what happened.* *(3). When Amitabh Bachchan died in "Sholay 1975".* *I am 100% sure that even a stone hearted person will cry after seeing these 3 scenes.* *Nothing can match these scenes in world cinema in terms of most emotional heartbreak scenes.*

Man, I haven’t seen this since the only time I ever saw it back when it came out in ‘98. Still hit me big time just watching the little clips here. What a movie. If I may recommend some other absolutely top foreign language films, you need to watch Downfall and Goodbye Lenin. Easily among the best there are & I know you’ll all enjoy them if you ever get the chance. Love the channel, ladies!

Another great Italian movie is "Pane e Tulipani" or Bread and Tulips in English form 2000. Great slice of life film with comedy, romance, and friendship.

You four have to watch "Rain Man" (1988). It's a beautiful, heartwarming movie that won Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. A great movie with some amazing performances. Of course before you watch it you should watch "Abbott and Costello's - Who's on First" comedy skit which plays an important part in the movie. It's a historically famous and hilarious comedy bit that's definitely worth watching.

Ooof... I needed a good cry. I've seen this movie at least 10 times since 1997 and it always does that to me.
