Thanks Alexa … I started with this, ran through several different versions of La Marseillaise, a few other national anthems, military bands, duelling banjoes and an hour and a half later … gotta love KZread, eh? Didn't learn any French tonight though ... A bientôt. Graham

I was shocked how brutal the anthem was as well. Something I expected from a totalitarian state.

DaYungGxD DBLVZX I know right !? I think Lo has made it her own as it is usually sang much more violently than that. She has managed to soften it with great talent. :)

@@learnfrenchwithalexa I do not mean any disrespect to the French or their culture. I was just a bit surprised by the lyrics. However, I am aware that France has been a country much longer than the United States and as a result, they have suffered through many wars with England and Spain. In truth, war requires a nation to face the obvious. For example, if you do not stand up and fight for yourself. There will be people who seek to subjugate you. Either way, I enjoy your channel and your videos. I honestly think it is the best resource available. And I look forward to learning more as I go about my journey en français. For example, I would like to posses the ability to say all of this in French. 😂👍👍

DaYungGxD DBLVZX I was noticing the same thing. I've known the tune for quite some time (not French, so picked up from. . .somewhere?), and know it originated around the time of the French Revolution. So it sort of makes sense. . .for that time. But that it's still the modern anthem and those lyrics. . .o.O My gosh, they're brutal! I'm not entirely sure how that is supposed to stir patriotic pride in this day and age. Very startling! Nicely done on the part of the singer, though. :)

@@Elentarien D'accord, premier, I watched this video while at work on my phone. I did not get a proper chance to enjoy the aesthetics and artistry of the video. Second, Up until this point, I had not even heard the full version of the star spangled banner. So I went back and listened to it. In order to see if there were any lines or phrases to match the intensity of the french national anthem. To this end, I did not find any. However, I went and listened to a symphonic rendition of the french national anthem and it is a beautifully arranged song. Furthermore, I enjoy shows like Vikings and Game of thrones. So I'm not the squeamish type. It was just surprising to hear the words "The soldiers are coming to cut the throats of your sons and your women" in a national anthem. And to be fair, if anything, the sentiment expressed in the song is historically accurate when depicting the realities of war. To conclude, watching the video from the comfort of my home has allowed me to take in the beauty of the background, the setting, and Lo's beautiful voice. It is an extremely well done video. And I am ashamed of the fact that, my naivety almost takes away from that fact. I also realized that july 14th is Frances Bastille day. Which is a celebration of the french revolution so that's awesome! So Vive La France, Je vous verrai bientôt 👍👍✌✌

It's a product of the time when it was written...war, revolution and the violent shakeup of a centuries-old sociopolitical order. In that respect, it's not at all unique. The Star Spangled Banner was also born from war and crisis.

Quick point of translation: the "impure blood" is not the one of the enemy, it's the one of the French soldiers, in contrast of the pure blood of the nobility (sang bleu). This is a common translation mistake (and most French people actually ignore this).
