Mireille Mathieu singing La Marseillaise (with lyrics)
Музыка
Mireille Mathieu's legendary performance of La Marseillaise with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
This one includes subtitles (lyrics; paroles) - sorry about the beginning, I couldn't find that portion of the video anywhere, but I did find the audio.
Mireille Mathieu chante La Marseillaise.
1989; black and white footage; Champs de Mars; Paris; French National Anthem

This is probably the best rendition of the anthem. She makes you feel as if she's on the battlefield with you, with the enemy unleashing hell upon you, and her bravely rallying the troops!

Her voice is like a drum. When she pronounces Marchons, especially on the O, she modulates her voice to amplify the rhythm of the song. It's masterful. Hearing her is getting a piece of the French spirit. Vive la France! If only the nowadays French would wake up and feel the meaning of these lyrics, yet again.

She is renowned for her superb diction whether she is singing in French, German, Spanish, English, Italian etc. This is even more remarkable when one considers that she is dyslexic. Her ability to overcome this is reflected in the comment by the late Pavarotti who described her as one of the most hard working and professional of singers. (She was certainly one of the most beautiful of women imo - remember she will be 74 in July. Sadly none of us stay looking young forever)

Teaching English speakers to trill an 'r' is a major topic for language teachers; there's a ton of stuff online devoted to this. 99% of people who can do it learned as toddlers ... so as adults they're hopeless at explaining how they do it because they've no idea. They just do it. This is another reason I'm so glad my older relatives never spoke to me in English when I was a kid.
@Sean_Coyne
4 жыл бұрын
Strangely enough the Latin "r" was trilled, or rolled as the Scots do. French evolved from vulgar (everyday) Latin, so the trilled "r" may date all the way back to those times.
@LetsChillPage
4 жыл бұрын
@Luke Perret lol No it's not Parisian accent in particular. Mireille Mathieu was born in Avignon. She's from South France. Mireille Mathieu had this peculiarity of really accentuating even more this roll of "R" which is the prerogative of French south accent and which is more or less pronounced according to the regions of the south. We also find this bearing of "R" in Burgundy (center of France). This bearing of "R" comes directly from Latin. Mireille Mathieu is from the last generation to have adopted this French tradition of a certain form of highly articulated singing. Tino Rossi Corsican singer (the south always) of the generation before her, also sang while rolling strongly the "R". While Charles Trenet, however, also from the south, didn't have this particularity. If you listen to Maurice Chevalier for example who's Parisian. He also didn't roll the R in such an accentuated way. On the other hand, Edith Piaf also tended to use a guttural accent to pronounce the "R". Yes, but her mother was Kabyle and born in Italy. But this isn't the only explanation. In fact, the singers who rolled the "R" while singing even when they were not specially from the south were most often inspired by the immense popularity of the operetta at that time (Luis Mariano was a huge star in France for exemple). The operetta which comes directly from the Opera and the Opera Bouffe which are most often sung in Italian (or German). Besides, it should be noted that the "R" isn't rolled in the same way according to the letter which precedes or succeeds it. In general it's when this "R" is placed after a consonant in a word.
@ak5659

This is fascinating! Thank you so much. I'll have to look into this further when I have time. Being American, I'm able to 'cheat'. People are so shocked to hear me trill an 'r' they never notice it's a Polish 'r'. In my defense, I have learned the voiceless trilled 'r' of some Italian dialects.

Inspector Javert Okay, right, I see. Yes. A lot of their best people are fleeing the country, mostly for England. There are 400,000 French nationals living in London. I'm a big francophile, so it's sad to me to see what is happening to their country. I hope they can pull out of the downward spiral, but I kind of doubt that they will because they are so delusional.

Dan Phillips thats fucking hilarious - if you understand their anthem - it spells out their love for liberty and freedom and equality for all. FOR ALL. If we take THAT as the standard french people should live by - then being anti islam or anti minorities is being distinctly anti french. And this spirit that's being spoken of - in theory it should be stronger than ever now
@dgphi

Pierzing.glint1sh7 You could not be more wrong. There is nothing in the anthem about "liberty and freedom and equality for all". It is a martial song about resisting anti-revolutionary forces and foreign invaders. It is a song about resisting tyranny. Both socialism and Islam are forms of tyranny.

@Lara Larah Louis XVI was not the tyrannical despot that everybody makes him out to be (Louis XIV was worse). No, Louis XVI was simply incompetent and incapable of running the country. He did not handle the famine well at all. France did need a government, and not Louis' advisory body. He should have just been kept as a constitutional monarch, but he was executed by Robespierre and his radicals. The same goes for George III. U.S. Americans make him out to be an evil tyrant, when he was just a competent monarch who happened to lose the Revolutionary War. Richard III lost the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. The Tudors (the likes of Shakespeare and More) made him a villain with a stoop, a withered arm and a bloodthirst that could not be satisfied. Really, he was just a disagreeable man who was killed on the battlefield. History is written by victors, and they make their overthrown kings seem evil, when in reality, they are not. Do you not agree?

@@adrian1622 Louis XVI tried to flee in Austria in order to defeat the Révolution. He has been arrested, judged and executed, Napoleon was only a general commanding french revolutionaries armies in the south of France at this time. Today France is what it is, built on wars, inspired the democracy and freedom.

Самое вдохновенное исполнение "Марсельезы"! Браво!
Outstanding!! The power of human voice!
_Come children of the Nation,_ _The day of glory has arrived._ _Against us stands Tyranny,_ _Its blood-stained banner raised high._ _Do you hear in the countryside,_ _The roar of these ferocious soldiers?_ _They come into our arms_ _To slay your sons and your companions_ _To arms, Citizens!_ _Form your battalions_ _Let us march! Let us march!_ _Let impure blood water the furrows of our fields_ _Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors,_ _Bear or hold back your blows._ _Spare these sorry victims,_ _Arming against us with regrets._ _But these bloodthirsty despots,_ _But these accomplices of Tyranny,_ _All these tigers who, mercilessly,_ _Rip their mother's breast!_ _Sacred Love of the Fatherland,_ _Lead, support our vengeful arms._ _Liberty! Beloved Liberty, fight with your defenders,_ _Under our flags shall victory_ _Hasten to your virile efforts._ _Let your perishing enemies_ _See your triumph, and our glory!_ _To arms, Citizens!_ _Form your battalions_ _Let us march! Let us march!_ _Let impure blood water the furrows of our fields_

@@BempostaFlix I do suggest you learn a bit of history before commenting stuff like that. Racism had nothing to do with it. Rouget de Lisle, who created the song, wanted a song that would raise the Marseille volunteers' spirit as the were marching to fight the Austrian invader, sent by the European monarchies to re-establish royalty in France 3 years after the Revolution. The mention of impur blood and ferocious soldiers is only to compare the oppenents as war dogs, beasts at the service of the oppressors. And while I agree when you say that racism isn't only between White and Black (as I am myself half Senegalese and half French) I can assure you that race has nothing to do with it in this case. You need to read the song with a 18th century mind and give the words and metaphors the signification they had back then. Racism wasn't a matter of importance back then, the concept itself wasn't a thing. You were French, or you were from another nation, but the physical caracteristics of your ethnicity didn't matter as much. If it was racist by nowadays standars, the French republic (for which Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood is the mantra) would have changed the lyrics, or chosen another anthem altogether.
