Today, the 30th of september 2019, mrs. Norman died. I have seen her in countless performances but this is the one I’ll never forget. A black woman, personifying lady Liberty in that place at that time was magical and highly symbolic. May she rest in peace.

Yes. I just shared this video in her honor. I was studying French history in grad school in 1989 and loved watching her performance on TV. I finally got to attend Bastille Day a few years ago. She did France and herself proud that day.

Daniel Woodlief It was a masterstroke of President Mitterand and Mrs. Norman wrote extensively about it in her autobiography. A personal envoy from the President of the French Republic asked her to sing live and solo at the conclusion of an evening filling show. How could she refuse? She received the Légion d’Honneur for this performance, as a token of respect and gratitude.

I watched the whole celebration as it was shown on US TV in 1989. I've never forgotten it. It was one of the more moving events of my life. The long parade made up of all the French sub-cultures in native costumes and the music by Mr Goode. I made a VCR tape that somehow was lost, but KZread has enough to remind me how good it was.

I'm envious. (LOL) I read an article about this event and it made a big impression. My thought: the French really know how to stage a spectacular celebration. Here it is. Ha, just saw Barbara and George Bush beaming up at the stage, no doubt very proud of their fellow American. This just has to be available as a DVD somewhere. Too good not to be.

Cette vidéo démontre tellement bien ce qu'est la France . Le blanc est uniquement une des couleurs du drapeau . Then the flag began to move, and Jessye Norman and her powerful voice emerged from the folds. It still makes me pause and relish the moment, its beauty and its meaning. France, one of the most powerful colonial nations in history, chose the descendant of slaves to perform their national anthem. They could have had anyone. They chose her.
