The crowd
I can still see the town, festive and delirious
Suffocating under the sun and from joy
And in the music I hear the shouts and laughs
That burst and bounce all around me
And lost and jostled by that throng
Dazed and at a loss, I stand still
When suddenly I turn round, he steps back
And the crowd throws me right into his arms
Taken away by the crowd that drags us
And sweeps us along
Crushed into each other
We are but one body
And the flow effortlessly
Pushes us, chained together
And leaves us both
Beaming, on a high, and happy
Swept away by the crowd that prances
And dances a frenzied farandole
Our hands remain knit together
And at times lifted up
Our entwined bodies fly off
And fall back together
Beaming, on a high, and happy
And joy whipped up by his smile
Runs through me and spurts anew from deep within
But suddenly I scream among the laughter
When the crowd tears him from my arms
Carried away by the crowd that drags us
And sweeps us along, driving us further apart
I fight, I put up a struggle
But the sound of his voice
Is smothered by all those laughs
And I scream in pain, in fury and in rage
And I weep
Swept away by the crowd that prances
And dances a frenzied farandole
I’m taken further and further away
And I clench my fists, cursing the crowd that robs me
Of the man it had given me
And that I never found again.
