La Fortuna and Arenal, Costa Rica: Expat Living in Costa Rica's Northern Highlands

Northern Costa Rica is a haven for nature enthusiasts and thrill-seekers, offering a vast range of activities. Lake Arenal is known to have some of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing in the hemisphere. And, after a day on the water, you can unwind in geothermal hot springs or get massages at one of the numerous boutique hotels in the region, including in expat and tourist destinations such as La Fortuna, which has the largest international community in the area and Nuevo Arenal, which features uniquely European mountain vibes.
In this video, we discuss the region and talk about why you might want to consider the region when moving to Costa Rica.

Do you currently live in the Arenal or La Fortuna, Costa Rica? What do you like about it? What do you not like about it? Are you considering living there? What questions do you have?

After eight days in downtown San jose (Calle 8 y Ave 8), I just arrived in La Fortuna. It is beautiful, and very friendly. Such a relief from the maddness of San Jose and the rudeness oc Oaxaca,Mexico. Pura Vida!

I really want to visit Costa Rica, but I am in an online, post graduate program, and I do not want to risk losing internet when my final thesis is due. I graduate in Jume. Then, I will travel to Costa Rica and experience the beautiful rainy season. I do not fear misery as long as the misery comes from my nature, my god. Meanwhile, I will need to leave Mexico because my FMM is expiring. I am thinking Chile, but I will keep Costa Rica in mind. Thank you for the insight and inspiration this channel gives me. I will continue to follow.

Great information! I'm going to visit next winter. Can you recommend a 4 star type hotel in La Fortuna or in Nuevo Arenal? Thanks!

Are there golf courses in this area? (That will always be my question when you talk about a region)

Good question! I don't believe there are any golf courses in this area. Most are in the Central Valley or Guanacaste.

Where would you say is the top party place for 20s and 30s somethings in Costa Rica? Is San Jose have a lot of clubs and nightlife?

Really hard to say - depends a lot on what you're looking for. San José has a great nightlife scene - of course much smaller than other cities based on the size of the country as a whole. Nightlife in the beach (read: tourist) towns is also known to be a lot of fun. With all: please be careful and use common sense. For example: walking on a beach drunk at 2am and being offered drugs isn't uncommon. Know when and where to avoid (true anywhere in the world - nothing smart happens after midnight...)

I was in La Fortuna around 15 years ago. When I asked about hiking, they said it was too dangerous due to volcanic vents. Has it changed? Now that I've retired , I'm looking for a place for hiking and road biking. And I don't drive.

You can hike around Arenal but legally you can't go to the top. I've heard that you can hike to the crater and if you're caught you have to pay a small fine. Pura vida!
