I saw the show on Broadway during its first run. It starred George Hearn, whom I had seen previously when he blew the roof off in SWEENEY TODD, and Gene Barry, whom people of my generation might remember as Bat Masterson on TV. Both were amazing in this show, especially Mr Hearn who was the perfect Zaza. "I Am What I Am" made me cry when I first heard it & ever since.

I saw the entire show with Graham Norton and he wasn't bad at all...certainly better than Hodge who played Albin like he was Louis de Funes after a stroke.....terrible..best Albin by far I saw was Gary Beach in the truly wonderful 2004 broadway revival

He was great in this. You sound like maybe just because you’re talentless you have to talk others down.

Jerry Herman actually said this London production from the Menier Chocolate Factory was the type of production he always wanted for the original Broadway show but the times were different then and they had to ‘sanitise’ it as a large Vegas style production. This was Herman’s favourite production which after a West End run went to Broadway.
