What’s the “The Professional” movie about?
Mathilda (Natalie Portman from Black Swan and Annihilation), a twelve-year old New York girl, is living an undesirable life among her half-family. Her father stores drugs for two-faced cop Norman Stansfield (Gary Oldman from Harry Potter and The Dark Knight). Only her little brother keeps Mathilda from breaking apart. One day, Stansfield and his team take cruel revenge on her father for stretching the drugs a little, thus killing the whole family. Only Mathilda, who was out shopping, survives by finding shelter in Léon's (Jean Reno from Godzilla and The Big Blue) apartment in the moment of highest need. Soon, she finds out about the strange neighbour's unusual profession - killing - and desperately seeks his help in taking revenge for her little brother. Léon, who is completely inexperienced in fatherly tasks, and in friendships, does his best to keep Mathilda out of trouble - unsuccessfully. Now, the conflict between a killer, who slowly discovers his abilities to live, to feel, to love and a corrupt police officer, who does anything in his might to get rid of an eye witness, arises to unmeasurable proportions - all for the sake of a little twelve-year old girl, who has nearly nothing to lose.

In a way this movie explores the “Daddy issue” complex. Matilda lost her father and what she is experiencing now is just overall love for Leon. But she is confusing it with sexual love. She’s lacking a family now and so now love is a confusing land that she is beginning to explore. Probably doesn’t help that she is maybe close to puberty. Leon has probably gone through what Matilda went through and knows better. He’s a professional, he has ethics and a code to follow. A gentleman not a monster. Only a monster would take advantage of that “daddy issue” complex.

Exactly! I couldn't agree more. To all men out there: become a professional and a gentleman. Don't be moved by desires, feel for the other person. There is no greater love than that. It's easy to manipulate, but true love requires a sacrifice at all times. (Edit: When I first saw this scene on the cinema I was attracted to it... It was wrong. A desire grew up inside me and I was exploring it for a long time, more than considered healthy. But in the end, I got rid of it on the whole. Deleted everything related to it... I was addicted but now I'm free. I won't miss anything...)

this is a thing that happens more often than people realize - young girls fall in love with a much older man because she feels safe and secure with and around him, she is finding herself and has all these new feelings that she has no experience with so it can all be very confusing....it is up to the adult to know better and teach them because they aren't going to feel safe and secure anymore if that boundary is crossed....the boundary....is what made the feeling of safety and security possible in the first place

I had bad feelings about the sexualisation of children during this movie from the first scene where Matilda was introduced just by the way she was dressed. By the end I was willing to brush it off as exploration of a taboo subject through film and had come to the conclusion that it was trying to show how young naive girls don’t know how to express their feelings properly, especially those who lack male role models. But after finding out that the director had a child with a 15 year old when he was 30 and that he originally wanted to include more explicit scenes I can’t help but think that there was a more malicious and perverse intent behind some of the scenes.

What she feels is the affection a girl feels towards a guardian figure who cares for her. She never had a parental figure in her life, an adult, that keeps her safe and protects her from the cruelty of the world. The thing with Mathilda is that her perception of love and affection is skewed due to her upbringing and environment she had to grow up in. She can't differentiate Parental love from Partner love, adult love, because she grew up in an environment where she had to present as a woman rather than a little girl. Leon is right to say how do you know what love feels like if you never felt it before. Its not the idea of Leon shes in love with but that someone who is inclined to be her guardian and care for her is actually doing so.

Now, not to defend it in anyway, and as screwed up as that movie was, what it had to say was important. While I didn’t watch it, I read the article written by its director, whose an idiot by the way. Anyway, it’s supposed to be about how kids today are being overly serialized and how some people are ok with it and others (parents specifically) don’t even notice. It was meant to bring light to the problem and make people talk. But the way they went about it was fucking appalling and down right disgusting. Basically they made a movie about the problem with overly sexualizing kids... by overly sexualizing kids. That being said, who in the hell thought that was a good idea, and how the fuck did it get green lit for Netflix? Because I honestly have no damn clue.

I watched this movie several times through my life: when I was a kid, teenager, young adult and a supposed-to-be-adult. When Leon spits the milk is my favourite part of the movie (besides the grenade pin gift scene). And I guess this particular scene also taught me to not taking advantage, besides my education. Some kind of a morale principle reinforcement. Not of a kid, but of a drunken friend, random woman in the streets, or another kind of situations that made me think at least once that I could have taken advantage on somebody. But no, there's no need to go through that. Those moments clearly were screaming that I was the one in a good position. And I should act to others like I would love them to behave with me. This mindset saved me for tons of hypothetical misunderstoods and problems. Thanks mom and dad for raising me this well. And thanks Leon for reinforce that idea. I feel funny because I never talked out about this. There's so many ways to have an intercourse or even a relationship that implies to have you both a good time, it's stupid to think in bad faith. Sorry for this innecesary volume about nothing relevant.I just hope to reinforce this kind of thoughts. Have a good day.

One of my favorite parts is when Leon went to go get Matilda after she got detained by the cops who killed her family. All while the cab meter was running. He didn’t care about his own safety. He just went into the lions den and got her back. Too cool and it proves how much he loves and cares for her. Kind of like a dad and his daughter.

Movies like this can only be made in a certain time in a culture. Unlike today, the 90's was a different decade, where weird, dark, different movies turned the spotlight on them simply for the beauty of their stories. These days,we have an unfortunate situation of self-censorship.

Leon is simply her first experience interacting with a 'real' man. Not the Bravo's like the corrupt police or the Charlie's like her father. Real men are protective, responsible, professionals who care about their communities. Hence Leon's Rules and nurturing nature. Matilda's love is the result of a girl finally realizing her potential, ..through him. Room to grow into greatness. In this, she and the house plant share a similar parable. 😉

Such a masterpiece, like literally, a masterpiece. A film with so much build-up, filled with raw emotions and feelings with a film that is truly memorable, unforgettable, legendary, and filled with emotions that you honestly can't help but feel alongside the characters & the emotional story behind it, especially what happens at the end which just makes this film turn to a sudden turn of just pure sadness especially with the build-up & how emotionally intense it was. A film & song where its just pure black and white, a film & song that has such strong emotions & feelings from/to your heart. Its a film where you just feel pure raw emotion as if you're the character or if you're seeing it first hand in person. A film with such a perfect selection of a cast with such an underrated actor Jean Reno. Like Jean Reno truly nailed the performance like hes so underrated, and it really shows. By far one of the greatest films of all time like all the roles were nailed perfectly. Its just a masterpiece.

That doesn't mean I support unlawful actions. But as an individual, in the situation, there are feelings we have to process. Matilda's trauma, Leon's trauma and how they process it, Matilda's lightheartedness, Leon's ice cold shell. Yet they are two humans with feelings. Amazing movie.

Leon turned out to be a fantastic father-figure for Mathilda. She's lucky she had someone like him, after her parents were such jerks. And the fact that Leon pretty much sacrificed himself, it really said something about how dedicated he really was.

I did research on this film after watching it because some parts of the movie seemed like there was sexual tension or at the very least romantic interest between Léon and Matilda, especially toward the end when she escapes the building. Turns out the original script indeed have a scene where they do end up having sex, but the director was forced to cut that part out of the film because of very obvious reasons. The justification for this was that Léon was emotionally immature and that somehow excused him having sex with a child. She also had to undergo psychological treatment to prepare for the role given her age at the time and the nature of the film.

in 1:19 he felt like he wasn't be loved before , he just was dealing with this world like big universe and he was too small and when someone said to him I love you he can't deal with that cuz he hadn't been loved by someone except his girlfriend and that was long time ago , since that no one told him even a nice word that rest his soul so he was very sensitive in emotions , that's deep !

It's amazing how Natalie's face just hasn't changed at ALL. Teen Natalie just looks like Adult Natalie's head photoshoped onto a teenagers body.
