In Pursuit of Indigo: Japanese ikat /Traditional technique (hand weaving, natural indigo dye)

This video features Mr. Kensuke Yamamura's Aizome Kasuri Kobo, who specializes in natural indigo dyed, hand-woven kasuri.
Aizome Kasuri Kobo
Founded in 1891, Aizome Kasuri Kobo is a Kurume Kasuri workshop located in Hirokawa, Fukuoka Prefecture. There are two main types of Kurume Kasuri: the indigo dyed, hand woven type, and the chemical dyed, machine woven type. Even amongst weavers that use indigo dye and hand weaving methods, Aizome Kasuri Kobo places particular emphasis on valuing traditional methods. The workshop creates beautiful gradations in the indigo’s color by dyeing pieces over and over, sometimes more than 50 times. They also design geometric patterns through interpretations of traditional motifs, creating pieces with a charm unique to Aizome Kasuri Kobo.
Kensuke Yamamura
Fifth Generation Owner, Aizome Kasuri Kobo
Head of Dyeing
While honoring the methods inherited from his father, Ken, Kensuke builds upon his experiences to create unique innovations. Since he was a child, Kensuke loved observing the river fish, insects, and other living things that surrounded him. Day after day, Kensuke conducts a taste test of the indigo to check it’s condition, making delicate adjustments as if having a dialogue with the dye. The question of the beauty of the Chikugo region and its indigo, and one’s place as a indigo dyer within it, Kensuke is facing this question each day through his craftmaking.
Craft Inn 手 [té] / indigo room
Craft Inn 手 [té] is an inn where you can experience a stay amongst Kyushu’s crafts. Each of the three rooms is themed with a different craft tradition. The indigo room is a window into the world of Aizome Kasuri Kobo, featuring a large wooden table boldly dyed by Kensuke Yamamura, Kurume Kasuri tapestries, cushions, and more.

Indigo, in all its varied shades, is a beautiful color. I wish there was a word better then 'beautiful', but I can't think of one rignt now. Thank you for sharing this experience with us. I can look at something and think how beautiful it is, but seeing all that goes into creating that, makes it even more pleasing to look at. Again, thank you.

Check out the intricate traditional ceremonial ikat weaving of sarawak. Makes these look rudimentary. These are still beautiful, but dive a bit deeper down the rabbit hole
