L👀K !!! GREAT CRESTED GREBES Courtship WEED DANCE - Podiceps cristatus

The Courtship Display, or dance, of the Great Crested Grebe, is a magical spectacle to watch.
Firstly they perform their famous 'water ballet'. Facing each other, the Grebes arch their necks over and in a near-perfect mirror image, they Preen (bob-preening) and flick their heads from side to side, whilst showing off their orange facial ruff and black crest tuft feathers on top of their heads (known as tippets). This re-establishes their bond.
As you see in the above video, I was caught off-guard a little when one of the Grebes suddenly took flight a short distance before landing and turning to face its 'dance partner'. The Grebe then rears up out of the water almost to its belly with its neck arched down, holding this posture yet moving forwards as it paddles frantically, known as the 'Ghostly Penguin Display'. As you see in the video, the Grebe is also able to perform a similar Dance moving backwards. It uses its wings as paddles for this remarkable Display.
This seldom seen behaviour itself is a pleasure to watch, but the real show stopper is the Weed Dance. This is when both birds dive down into the water and resurface carrying waterweed in their bills. When they meet they rear up out of the water, paddling frantically to maintain an upright position chest-to-chest whilst performing their Display.
The Weed Dance only lasts a few seconds and is an Impressive Display of stamina. It is an unforgettable sight and something many Birders never see. (patience and perseverance is called for) The video ends with both Grebes taking their Water Weed to use as nesting material.

Flow monitoring in Podiceps cristatus never gets tired. Synchronized movements, dancing after previous sinking and handing over a gift in the form of plants. It's a wonderful show. I did capture just about everything else though. I do still have one more GCG video to edit, with under water swimming (filmed off a bridge) and some Impressive fishing. (and Fish).
