Times Square on a Friday night is practically a ghost town. Steve Handelsman reports from Washington DC on Bush’s speech and the report then cuts to Los Angeles for a quick sum-up of Day 3 of the L.A. riots in the aftermath of the acquittal of the four police officers who beat Rodney King. I don't blame the residents of New York City being on edge because of the riots in Los Angeles. In the early 1990s; New York was hit with two separate riots: In August of 1991- prior to the Los Angeles riots- the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn was hit by rioting due to the accidental death of a black child who had been accidentally ran over by car being driven by a Jewish rabbi. In July of 1992- after the Los Angeles riots- rioting hit the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan due to the shooting death of a Dominican man by a white police officer.
