L 39 Albatros FPV - Catastrophic Mid Air CRASH & Cockpit Display Maiden

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I have consolidated the only 2 flights I had last weekend in one video.
Unfortunately, I got involved in a mid-air collision with Rob’s Freewing YAK-130. The result you can see in the video…
Besides the mid-air collision, It was a great flying session, lots of fun and good results with the oLED Display!
The main objective was to test the OLED Displays in the air for the first time! Yes, this is the first time… The British winter was quite long, grey and wet!
--- COCKPIT DISPLAY RESULTS: Overall was quite positive. I have realised is much better to have the flight data in the cockpit than in the OSD. This was not the initial objective of the Display when I built it, but it proved (at least for me) to be so natural and easier to access the information, you just know where it is when you need it… you don need to hunt or scan the whole screen in the big DJI Goggles display, at the same time it is not in front of your field of view, it is in the place it should be. The information behaviour was perfect and was pretty much matching with the OSD data. Another quite positive result is that the Display is bright enough to be clearly seen even against direct sunlight! This is really good as this is always a concern when using any kind of Display at outdoor applications.
--- COCKPIT DISPLAY IMPROVEMENTS: I have to find means to decrease the refresh rate of the screen display as it is not compatible with the DJI Camera refresh rate. The result is that the image seems to be flickering when seen through the DJI camera, this is not good at all. It was quite frustrating actually because during tests under less light conditions (indoor), there were no flickering behaviour… But that is what tests are for 😊. For sure, will find ways to fix it.
Fully Functional oLED Displays for RC Planes: RCGauges.com
--- CRASH: Second flight was supposed to be a formation flight that didn’t end up well. I got hooked with Rob’s YAK and a catastrophic crash was the consequence. After the 2 planes got hooked 20m above the ground, there was no enough time to recover the from the low air speed and resulted in a massive crash. Unfortunately, the L-39 Brietling will not recover from this incident.
I am really sad about the loss. I have worked literally few hundred of hours in this plane… But that’s the trade off when you undertake risks. RIP my friend, I had lots of fun with you…

Sorry you had to lose the plane but this video is by far one of the best FPV flights I have ever seen, in so many ways, its an archive of incredible flight data, great skills and setup/programming.

This is the coolest and best FPV video I have seen on a jet. Great flying sorry for your loss. I've been flying 15 plus years now and have lost many planes for numerous reason. I was doing a dog fight with a my Corsair vs a zero with 4 feet of string and 10 feet of cray paper we had a mid air collision. I hit his wing head on and split his plane in two and it only Jared my wing loose and I landed safely this was well before FPV.That is just the risk we take when we fly. Best of luck of your future rc endeavors from one pilot to another

Yak-adoodle-dandy. Always a bummer when one makes it and the other doesn't. It sort of looked like the others fault depending on which sip you were riding in. So no-one's fault really. Racing incident kinda thing. Hope you can both look at it objectively and stay friends. These things happen in this hobby, sooner or later. Or it does if you have FUN and not just fly around in circles on your own. Don't let the fun police get Ya. Chin up.

Sorry about the crash, good job on the OLED display though, hope you can get the flickering issue sorted out! As for formation flying, there are techniques and rules to follow to minimize the chance of this... one has to prepare for this type of flights, set-up the jets accordingly, train on sims, talk with the flight buddy to coordinate. It's happened to me as well. You need to train properly or this ensues! Most important of all, one has to fly as straight as possible and learn to keep his side on the formation (not crossing from left to right). When a collision course is detected, one must break away immediately. If you want to give it another shot, let me know and I can give a few other tips. :) Again, my condolences. :'(

Hey Mate! I completely agree! Actually, we had not planned at all to fly in formation... It was not in the day's objective... We just ended up with those late notice bright ideas you know "What if we do a formation?!"... Not proper planning, briefing, preparation and so on... Not that it would change the results thou lol We keep the rates always on 100%, this is the first thing I would change, second: fly straight as you said, gentle turns, use ground references, communicate, use similar planes (speed wise) and so on...

100th like. That Yak sure handled the midair “tap” pretty well. What happened to your L-39, did the battery come unplugged? If so, that’s pretty surprising, because that was a fairly gentle midair collision. It seemed gentle enough that no paint was scraped, and no foam was damaged in the midair.

Not fair your friend with the yakbis the one who cut your way and it's the one which continue flying. Usually USSR planes flying sell with tape, but that's yours which need some glue and tape. Please come to my workbench to repair it, I'll help you in my nice piece of Frebch campaign and we will discuss around fpv 😇👍

  • @aerospacematt9147

    @aerospacematt9147

    2 жыл бұрын

It would be incredibly difficult to add an acceptable size parachute to such a plane. The mechanism for deployment in itself would be a challenge, not to mention the dead weight. Midair collisions are semi common, but not to the point that adding a parachute and bulky deployment mechanism would be worth it.
