This is one of the most attractive aircraft in this category. If I was in the market for a trainer/light attack asset this is the one I’d choose.

So, it's an L-39 airframe... with improved canopy, greatly updated avionics, HUD, etc., probably other improvements as well. Good news, as the old LAME canopy was implicated in many FATAL incidents. Wonder if same type rating??? I see instruments and controls labelled in English, perhaps to attract NATO buyers? That would be smart. Also bodes well for civilian L-39 owners as more L-159 sales deepens the support/logistics pipeline for the type.

Does it carry a gun? Even if only in the ground attack role, a gun might come in handy.

Not real air-to-air fighter, L-159B is just a combat trainer, while in L-159A version is light combat attack fighter for attacks against ground targets (infantry, tanks, cars, trucks, armoured carrier etc.). It's similar plane to new russian Yak-130. Sometimes L-159 is compared to A-10 or Su-25/39, but these are more armoured.

What's new about this jet trainer, maybe the Powerplant or some systems upgraded, but it still look like the ever reliable L-29 Albatross

Alan Caldoza Yes, you are correct. Its received a new Powerplant and updated systems/avionics that allow it to fire western weapons. It still follow the same basic design of the L-39 but has been modified to support more load and g-force. It also is able to carry more through the addition of more hardpoints on the aircraft.

It is not a air-dominance aircraft.. It is lihgt and cheap jet with CAS capability, NATO compatible, AESA radar capability in new versions, no need for high Gs..

Attack craft, not fighter. It is designed to counter ground targets rather than airborne threats.

العراق اشترى 12 من L159 التشيكية الصنع وهي طائرة تدريب وتستخدم لمهام قتالية تم انتاج هذه الطائرة عام 1960 بالتوفيق للعراق

it's not jet trainer it's the 39 that's the jet trainer l 159 is a light attack.

The B designates 2 seats, two seats are usually good for training.

The L-159 is done in single and double seats version. I think the Iraqi army uses them against terrorists.
