When Westinghouse acquired CBS in the early 90's, it was forced to divest one of its stations in Philadelphia to satisfy FCC ownership requirements. KYW was Westinghouse-owned and WCAU, CBS-owned. Westinghouse decided to have its network on its station, so CBS moved to KYW/3 and NBC moved to new owners at WCAU/10. KYW actually started in radio in Chicago in the 1920's and moved to Philly a few years later.

Worse, CBS sold WFRV and WJMN in 2007. That move separated both stations from WBBM, WWJ, KYW, WPSG, KDKA, WJZ and WPCW.

The more interesting story is how KYW came to be the only station east of the Miss River with call letters that start with a "K." All other stations in the region start with a "W."

Al Meltzer did not go directly to WCAU from KYW. In 1977-78, Al did a short stint as sports director for NBC affiliate WMAQ in Chicago. He didn't fit in there and didn't like being so far away from home in the Delaware Valley, so he departed to join WCAU in Philadelphia in 1978.

Tom Williams And then you have my market, where 4 stations are owned by one owner, with the ABC and Fox outlets owned by the same company, effectively creating a duopoly. But this is only because in certain sweeps periods the Fox outlet and the CW outlet rotate between 4th and 5th, while the MyTV affiliate sometimes rotates between 5th and 6th.
