Kyoto Station's Escalator Mountain Climb

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to Kyoto Station! This place was built before the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and is really ... BIG! Look up! There's an escalator mountain to conquers.
I featured Japan's Escalators in a previous episode:

There is an enormous amount more to the station than John showed us. It's gigantic and kind of a maze with numerous levels underground and a multi-level shopping mall at the top that seemed hidden. Don't explore with your suitcase.

We stayed in the Granvia Hotel IN Kyoto Station in 2018; and agree with your estimate of this fabulous station. You can even walk along the roof within a protected corridor, looking right down into the Grand Concourse. The Granvia Hotel entrance opens directly into the station. Just fantastic.

If my memory serves me well, that skywalk/connection bridge links to complexes of ramen noodle shops with various flavors from different parts of Japan. Worth trying out if you have extra time and appetite to fill.

I've been there on my trip and I'm pretty sure there was some sort of Ghibli exposition on the opposite side of that escalator mountain.... which I couldn't spend much time at because we had to be at a Ryokan for check in. But yeah... baffling. Such a huge open space.

I always miss these livestreams. But it's fun to watch, especially this one because I've been there. Yes, all the way to the top! Amazing station! Did you know that those huge stairs also perform a lightshow with moving images? There are lights hidden in the steps and at dusk they go on. We didn't know so that was a happy discovery.

This station has been mentioned in many architectural columns. The station itself presents a stark contrast to Kyoto’s traditional architecture. It marks the new era of high rises and modernization.

I think they tinted the glass panels on the roof of Kyoto Station is to block out the sun's glare during sunrise and sunset. People might be resting at the bamboo garden and the sun glare might be overwhelming.

If you like escalators try the Central Mid-level in Hong Kong, 1/2 Mile Long. However, although an impressive ride, not really that much to see and you have to walk down. Unless you can flag down one of those thieving taxi bus's.

And its construction was filled with controversy. Many said the station's architecture too much clashed with the historic architecture of Kyoto itself, which was specious given that all the buildings within a few blocks of Kyoto Station itself are all very modern anyway.

well, China is much safer than the US generally. You can walk in any small alleys at night and don't need to be worried about getting robbed. Also, you just don't see any gun in China, even the police officers are not armed. People are sincere and friendly in general, maybe you can visit there and see by your own eyes. Welcome to China. Not really - even the locals can push past, some people walk fast, some people walk slow. He's also apologising for pushing past people on the escalators as well (you can hear him quietly say shitsureishimasu as he goes by) He's much politer than a lot of foreigners visiting Japan.
