KYMCO Like 150i Scooter REVIEW

2019 KYMCO Like 150i ABS Model Review // I had never even heard of KYMCO scooters when I started looking into buying a scooter. Watch on to see how I feel about it 18 months later. 🔽🔽🔽🔽
We have now had this scooter for about 18 months, so what's the verdict? This KYMCO lives on the gulf coast and enjoys year-round riding opportunities. At this point, only the standard break-in recommended by the dealer and standard maintenance (oil changes) has been needed so far. (24 months in & the story is the same)
This was originally the husband’s scooter, but I’ve since adopted it. However, I had him put his thoughts together if you’d like more insight and photos.

I bought my Kymco Like 150i from another woman selling hers on Facebook. After riding for 40 years all sorts of HD’s, I find this ride fun to zip around in town and on highway if need be. I wanted a Vespa but something told me to start here first. I’m glad I did. I’ve enjoyed it immensely and next year am going to get a Vespa 300GT. Retirement is fun when you’re doing what you love!

I have been riding a Kymco Like 200i 2012 and it has never had a problem. This is a wonder built in Taiwan and mine will go 55 mph so cruise mine at 44-50 mph. They should be more popular and I mean all makes. To bad Americans are so into macho. Missing out on a lot of fun. Reliable, great fuel mileage. and FUN. OH, by the way I am 77

Well, not sure about the "macho" comment but, in congested population areas, scooters are def popular. Where I prefer bigger stronger bikes, is in the much more open and expansive parts of the USA which is massive and most of it. Thus the preference for bigger bikes. I love my Kymco here in SoCal and ride it more than anything.

I got my 2019 Kymco Like 150i ABS over 2 years ago after a great deal of reseach, and also decades of MFG experience including selling top brands of CNC Mfg machines in our family business as one of the oldest CNC distributors in the nation. I've also visited most of the worlds top CNC mfg plants in Asia, Europe and the USA. Kymco is the 4th largest motor mfg in the world and have mfg the Honda motors since the mid 60's. They do the same for other mfgs like Kawasaki, and Yamaha. This Kymco as the very important ABS brakes and all LED lights as well. I've used the ABS dozens and dozens of times as I drive hard and fast and put this scooter through it's paces as I use is almost daily. I store my helmet under the seat as I do not ever use a full face helmet on a scooter. I do however on my 1200 cc motorcycle. The fuel injection system is excellent and works great. Kymco has since come out with larger scooters competing and beating the vaunted Bergman including Bremble brakes!! The Kymco and it's it's full 2 yr warranty outperforms the Vespa for half the price or less, and is more advanced technology and likely better quality. I've changed the oil once after 500 or 600 miles and zero issues to deal with. I've had it up to 64MPH with 2 adults and I'm 200 lbs. The belt drive is smooth, quiet and low maintenance. I cannot recommend this unit or any Kymco any higher. In short, it's a no brainer (plus I use the USB in the glove box to charge my phone and can get 5 plastic bags of groceries using the under seat storage and the bag hook direcetly in front of the seat to hook the bags on to.

Both Kymco and SYM are from Taiwan with more than 60 years experience in bike/scooter manufacturing. There are 20 million bikes in Taiwan with population of 23 million. Most of them are walk-thru scooters for practical purposes. There is no school bus in Taiwan. So dad/mom's scooters with walk-thru floor are the major vehicles for school in the rush hours in the morning with two kids. Walk-thru scooters are also the workhorses for most families to haul stuff around. I was riding my 1997 Kymco 125 c.c. scooter bought used to commute to work before my retirement in 2010 without any breakdown while go grocery shopping weekly with my laundry basket on the floor. Now my only gripe about my old "die-hard" Kymco is that I am kinda hard to find an excuse to part with it for a fancy new scooter. Kymco is making J300 medium scooters for Kawasaki while delivering 650 c.c. engines to BMW.

Very thorough research. A lot of people go on just a gut feeling, or a prior preference. I’ve never used the USB charger on either of my bikes. It’s just not convenient to use. Gas mileage, speed, storage and insurance were major concerns for me when I started to look at a scooter. I needed a bike that was a good alternative to a car.

Awesome review!!! Great little scooter! One thing....most kymco scooters have that half lip to get the key into the gas cap. It's there to use for opening the cap more easily than just using the key. Next time you need to fill up, flip the lip, put in the key and hold that lip and the key together to remove the gas cap on most kymco scooters. Ride safe!!

I've been looking at scooters for about a year now. I've been riding motorcycles for over 50 years and have had 2 scooters in the past. I had just about narrowed it down to the Kymco Like 150i, for the same reasons you did. But now I'm getting the feeling that Kymco seems to be giving up on the US market. Every year they discontinue some of their nicest models (no more Like 150i or Like 200i for 2021) and their model range gets smaller. Some of the Kymco dealers closest to me are no longer Kymco dealers, and the ones that still claim to be never have anything in stock anymore. My nearest Kymco dealer used to have a whole row of various Kymco scooters in the show room 10 years ago and today the only Kymco they have in stock is one 2015 Super 8 leftover. The next closest has only a 2018 leftover Like 150. Now I'm looking at SYMs, another good Taiwanese brand. The Fiddle 3 200i is very similar to the Like. There aren't many SYM dealers around here yet but they seem to be making some inroads into the US market instead of the opposite. I'm thinking that if I buy a Kymco I may have an orphan in a year or so.

I wouldn’t write Kymco off. It seems that scooters are more popular these days, and manufacturers across brands are struggling to keep up with demand. I noticed 2021 looked a little light on Kymco’s lower cc line-up, but they introduced a couple of higher powered options. They don’t have the look I want, but I was impressed they are moving upwards in cc’s at least. That said, I do like the Sym Fiddle 3, too. I even dare to say it looked a bit more polished than the Like. It’s tough to choose! I’m badly wanting to do some shopping again, too!!

When I had my "sporty" 250cc Chinese scoot I used to have guys on sportbikes wave at me all the time because when they saw all that plastic coming down the road toward them they just assumed it was a sportbike until I went past and then they did a double-take LOL! I guess in downtown Philadelphia maybe it's different, or near a big college campus. Scooters have never really caught on in the US, except maybe during WW2 when cars and gas were hard to come by. Kymco doesn't seem to understand that though, and they have a long history of introducing some really nice scooter that's selling like crazy in Asia or Europe and then when they don't sell a ton of them here they can't figure out why and they withdraw it from our market and try something else. They never seem to catch on that Americans just aren't going to buy scooters in big numbers no matter how nice the scooter is. Now they are offering the People S 150 which has everything you could want in a small scooter, and they'll be disappointed when they only sell a few thousand of them in 2021. It's been nice talking to you, most of the scooter reviews I watch require me to speak Tagalog to understand :)

Kymco scooters are from Taiwan. We haven’t needed any parts for ours, but a friend has had success just contacting her dealer. They either order for her or point her in the right direction for mods & a repair. I’m only knowledgeable to the level of oil changes, but reading between the lines, I think you’re trying to make sure you steer clear of the brands like TaoTao. I hadn’t heard of Kymco before I started shopping, but it is not in that TaoTao level of quality. They’re a blast & cost effective, so I’m glad to help another rider get on the road!!

I'm looking at a 2007 Vespa 150 LX. It's a good price with low miles (3,600) for $2,200 It needs new tires and has a road rash spot on the rear right fender vs a 2013 Vespa 300 GTS with 7,000 miles for $4,000. I'll be using it for leisure as I work from home. I'll be mostly in the city but I do have a lot of bridges and the backroads speed limit is 35-50 miles an hour. How would you compare the 150 vs the 300 besides the obvious better gas mileage and speed? I was thinking of getting the 150 because it's a great price then after scooting around for 1 season I can decide if I should go bigger or keep the 150. I would love to hear everyone POV.

I will add a rear case, most likely a Givi...this is going on the highway as I live in British Columbia on Vancouver Island and to go north and south on the island I will need the ability to travel on the highway. (I would have preferred the Italian traditional look, but because my bike looks more futuristic I believe that lends the design to the abundant storage under the seeat. I have to come back to this video flick. Today I went to my local HEB and walking through the parking lot saw the a Kymco People 150 in seafoam green color. Cool looking scooter. I had to stop and give it a look over. Don't know what year it was but it looked brand new. Had a top box but not big enough for a full size helmut. The floor board length looked shorter than a Vespa. The handle bar mounted mirrors were definitely not wide enough for proper viewing. At least not for even my small 5'9" frame. I got the impression that the dimensions of the scooter were intended for smaller/shorter people. It is an Asian manufactured bike after all. Other than that it looked pretty slick. The seat looked like a knockoff of the Vespa which is cool and the gang because why not copy a good seat? I reckon I must be coveting that scooter a little bit as here I am posting about it. On another note I want a Vespa 300 GTS Touring. Unfortunately with my job I am often working 6 and 7 days a week and have had no time to realize that dream. I am retired (allegedly) and I bought my first motorscooter just over 10 years ago. It was a Kymco Jockey 125, delivered directly to me by the factory in VietNam. To date the Jockey has carried me just under 450,000 kilometres with two engine rebuilds (change all the bearings and cylinder refurbishment). It only failed me once on the road - the "rubber band" failed but Kymco shipped me a replacement and a local Honda dealer fitted it. I have just purchased a KYMCO 125 LIKE, again through the factory. Although I didn't order it, there was a NOODOE device built into the dash. For me, totally useless. KIMCO builds what we called in the Army "brick shit houses", to civilians totally reliable products. PROs: Quiet engine, easily adaptable rear seat bar; takes off like a rocket, good lighting, ABS Braking. CONs: Seat is harder than concrete; the gas filler cap was designed by an idiot - very hard to manoeuvre; feels top-heavy (centre of gravity wrong); seat-footrest-ground dimensions are wrong for the average male body; the dash "storage" locker is thin, can't even fit my log book into the thing since much of the space is occupied by the steering column; TO CHANGE THE AIR FILTER IT IS NECCESSARY TO REMOVE A SIDE PANEL; the under-seat trunk/boot is too small for almost anything. This NOODOE THING that simply says the weather is CLEAR! MODs: I reworked the rear passenger handlebar to attach a GIVI 42 litre luggage box; I attached a GIVI windshield; I added a wide rear lightbar (for truck size lights even has a scrolling sign); flashing side driving lights (safety); 4-way parking flashers; 2 additional hooks for groceries; spot light bar; loudspeaker in pointy end (I love music on long rides). WOULD I BUY AGAIN: Yes - because of KYMCO RELIABILITY.

Kymco scooters are kind of like Mazda cars. They're really good, and they're a very good value, but you don't see very many of them on the road. Lack of popularity is why you can't find aftermarket goodies specifically tailored for your Kymco. The scooter market in North America is small compared to Europe and Asia. In North America, scooters are the Rodney Dangerfield of the two wheeled machines...they get no respect. It's a tough market to break into, especially when Piaggio, Genuine and the big Japanese brands have the market sewn up. It doesn't help either that the Chinese are dumping cheap (unsafe IMHO) low-quality scooters, at low prices, that quickly break-down and give the entire scooter industry an underserved reputation for low quality. I'm glad to see you and your husband have joined the scooter community. When you ride a scooter, you're forced to move more slowly than in a car. It's this slower pace that lets you notice the landmark you'd never seen in your hometown before. It's the slower pace that makes you wonder "what's down this street?" and gives you the urge to explore it. Good scootering to both of you.

Is your husband cramped on this. How big is he?

He is 5’10”, and while my Buddy is quite a sight with him on it, the Like is a comfortable sitting position. He carries a little extra weight in his belly, so he won’t ride cramped. BUT if by chance you’re coming from something bigger, you may find it more cramped. He’s mainly riding a Kymco AK550 these days, so the Like isn’t as comfy as he used to say it is.

I have a Like 150 and was a little concerned about fitting on it at 5'10" and 200 lb. But it's fine. I sometimes slide back an inch or so onto the seam across the seat but don't really feel it. I have a lot more problem with the bigger scooters that all seem to have the stepped seat that forces you to sit too far forward. The handlebar position is fine and no knee interference. To be turning the bars far enough to hit your knee you'd have to be going so slow that you'd be almost stopped and would have your foot down anyway. Anyone bigger than me might feel a little cramped though.

This has driven us bonkers trying with 3 different helmets in a variety of ways! I have another pal that hasn’t had luck either, so please share how you fit a full-face on to help us!

Okay. The buckle that the helmet strap runs through goes over the post that is toward the front of the seat. The chin guard will be resting flush on the scooter body.

Loved the video but gotta' say that scooter riders are like vegetarians. Eventually vegetarians all eat chicken. And eventually scooter riders all get a Vespa. Ride safe and mahalo!

Bwahaha! It is a thing, but I see so many folks that treat Vespa like it's an Apple product they'd never buy on principle. I get both sides on that! Rich stuck with the Kymco brand with his engine size upgrade. No way he'd ever buy a Vespa.
