There will always be an exception floating around out there, maybe someone will pipe up screaming about their 1948 Cushman delivery trike/scooter, but barring that guy, consider this a standard rule. I am not aware of any modern scooters that do not have center stands which will allow you to practice this way. Be sure to not mistake scooters with motorcycles and mopeds in this rule of thumb. This is not a normal thing for motorcycles that would be selling in the same market as the scooter crowd, like the Honda SuperCub (125cc, automatic transmission motorcycle). You will not be able to apply the rear brake to accomplish the same goals. The center stand allows the rear tire to be elevated off the ground so when you throttle, the rear tire will be spinning under power as it would be were you riding. Be sure to keep your weight forward because if you lean backwards you may launch yourself off of the center stand inadvertently. I used to do that on one of my larger motorcycles I had a few years ago as a trick rather than rocking off the center stand. I put it in gear then leaned back as I throttled and took off from a parking spot. (DO NOT ATTEMPT, I AM FOOLISH AND HAVE BEEN RIDING MOTORCYCLES AND SCOOTERS ON THE ROAD, INCLUDING LARGE DISPLACEMENT, SPORT BIKES, CRUISERS, DIRT BIKES, AND STANDARDS, SINCE THE MID-1980s AND IN THE DIRT EARLIER THAN THAT). Good question though.

I think motorcyclists need to watch this as they look down on scooter riders they never ridden one anyway. They just assume because its not a manual its crap, yet some scooters can outrun some manual bikes. Its simple to ride a scooter but there is a skill to be a great scooter rider.

I have ridden motorcycles on the road since the mid-80s. In the dirt before that. I love scooters as much as motorcycles. I’ve owned massive full dress baggers and sports touring bikes, muscle bikes, and standard road bikes, classics and some that look like bugs or transformers from the front. I can’t decide which are more fun, those or my 150cc scoots. I think a young lady at the grocery store though I was hitting on her because I pulled over my honest to goodness 3 second bike to ask her questions about her Genuine Buddy Like. I was honestly curious because I was looking for a new scooter to replace my old, long lost, beloved Wolf, EX150 (little Chinese scooter). The Buddy was one on my short list, instead all she’d tell me was she has a boyfriend. Anyway, I ended up with a new Lance Havana Classic 200i. For the record, my wife would not let me date a scooter girl so I was definitely not hitting on her. So, if you haven’t figured it out, I’ve been riding for a long time and ride anything on two wheels. Here is the secret I have learned about motorcyclists, they are jerks. When I’m on a cruiser the sport bike crowd won’t wave back, act offended if you pull to double up at a traffic light (side by side) they get snotty. Same with cruiser guys when I was on a sport bike. Everyone said I was a “fake biker” when I ride in the rain”. In the world of bikes, everyone seems to treat everyone who rides in a way different than they do, or different style bike, as if they are from a different planet. It’s frustrating and disappointing. I don’t think it’s the motorcycles vs. scooters as much as motorcyclists against anyone riding differently.

You said, "You never want to brake and turn at the same time when you're on two wheels." That is not true. You must learn how to brake while you turn. It's called trail braking. It is a very useful skill for controlling a turn, including a U-turn.

Ummmm… why is there always a “that guy” in the room? For those not in the know, trail braking is a light brake pressure on the front brake as you enter a hard corner to preload the front suspension and reduce the travel during cornering, thereby allowing the bike to apply more pressure to the earth rather than suck suspension up into the forks. Now that this is explained in the most basic terms without going into physics and convoluting a matter on a channel that is obviously catering to new riders and people who are responding with comment like, “just picked up the new scoot today and excited to start learning, thanks”, why don’t we let’s let these good people explore the adventure that is scooting without trying to prove we are all peers to Valentino Rossi. If you prefer those types of debates there are channel better suited for you to explore and debate others in your experience level. Go hang youth Yammie, or Dan Dan the Fire Man. I’m sure you will get more entertainment than you can stand there, but most of the folks I’m seeing here likely just ignored you because you aren’t even talking about scooter techniques, that is motorcycling. As for never wanting to brake while turning, If it mattered to me I would go rewatch to see if he said on two wheels, but I think I heard him say on a scooter. As far as scooters go, I’m inclined to agree. I’ve never owned a high end, a Vespa or Piaggio, but every scoot I’ve ever owned out of the roughly 10 since the ‘80s was scraping in a turn long before trail braking was a concern. As for general riding, I trail brake all day on my Tracer 900GT, and my Star Venture TC. I rarely will on my M109R BOSS because that pig just wants to roll in straight lines. I’ve been riding seriously on the road since the mid-‘80s and trail braking is just a new fad. Its a good tool in the kit, but it’s a buzz word kids scream when they want to feel like they are impressive. Sort of the way everyone becomes an expert at curling (sliding rocks across ice wile people do silly things with push brooms) every four years when the Winter Olympics come along. We get ice every 11 years in my area of Texas but every four years everyone I know becomes a curling professor… Let’s get back to scootering and let these nice folks learn the craft and have some fun. That’s what it’s all about, not trying to muddy things up to sport our own egos. That’s what the Dragons Backbone is for.

The training program and license in most states is for a scooter with an engine of 50cc or above. That is when you need a motorcycle license. Each state then sets the requirement for the license in that state. Here in Texas it requires a two day class by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, then a riding proficiency test and a written multiple choice knowledge test. At that point you can ride basically anything with 2 wheels. We do not designate motorcycle classes based on displacement or power output.

Not good to teach people to leave there feet down, scooter moves feet up. practice with out the motor running, balance is very important to learn wright form the begging. Duck walking or sliding your feet just above the ground is not good and can be a very bad thing to get in to. Only takes a split second to get your foot cough and under the scooter. A friend of mine spent six months in a cast because of that, She now lifts her feet before the bike even starts to move, as do I, As you start to turn on the gas or on a bike let out the clutch lift your feet, Do this over and over till you do it with out even thinking. The same when you come to a stop, slow down come to a stop then put your feed down. One of the best things you can do is learn to ride very slowly, U turns and figure eights. The slower you go the more you will learn how to balance the scooter or bike. We will quite often when come to a red light just slow down to a crawl, as long as we can, a good every day practice. Always keeping our feet up and on the pegs or running boards, till we come to a complete stop. There are some that call this advanced riding, I call it basic skills, that you should learn form day one.

@@hiltonmcconnell2563 forgive me for saying so, but I’m sticking with the MSF training. I mean no disrespect, but I’ve been riding on the road since the mid-80s, this is not a new subject for me. I don’t know your experience, nor do I question it, we each have our personal preferences and beliefs. Having said that, the premier organization in the U.S. for motorcycle safety training has a preferred technique that has worked for decades, that I’m aware of, I’ll not argue that the technique is wrong. All that aside, the blanket statement that feet stay on pegs at all times, period, end of discussion, unless you are starting or stopping rolling, I will also dispute. Prior to riding road, and for years after, my more than three and a half decades on the road, I rode dirt. Anyone who has ever ridden dirt knows, pulling your feet off the pegs is not only alright, it is appropriate technique in many circumstances. Cornering, sand, mired wheels, oh my, anything on wet red clay and feet become outriggers. Making the blanket statement that something you don’t do is absolutely wrong, period, end of discussion, in every circumstance, simply prevents you from expanding your own knowledge base. Trying to argue that your method is the only method with beginners will stall learning, may cause frustration in people who aren’t catching on as quickly with your preferred technique, and may even cause people to get injured by forcing them to attempt to commit to your strict technique without starting with even basic skills. I’d question the parenting skills of anyone who would stick their 5 year old on a bicycle telling them they don’t need training wheels, and don’t dare take their feet off the peddles. Give them a shove and explain the bloody hands and knees are part of the learning process.

@@josh8494 comparing a peddle bike to a motor bike ? there is a huge difference, and as for dirt and race track they have the proper equipment on and again not comparison to some one learning with street close on. If you have full equipment no problem putting your feet out or down, not the same with what most people show up waring to learn street riding. If a peddle bike falls over on you or you get your foot cough there will be very little damage, Not the same if a 600 lb. or 1,000 lb. motor cycle when you get your foot cough under it. When learning most likely will panic and could make things even worse. I have been riding for over 50 years, and have seen a few results of people leaving there feet down, one girl 2 years later was still not able to walk right. It only takes a fraction of a second for something to go wrong, First thing is learn how to balance, not hard to learn in most cases less than thirty minutes, and some within five minutes. You comparing some one riding track with full equipment with some one learning with street close. ???? You teach a child to stand before you teach them to walk. Balance first then motion. Not rocket science.

Speaking of focusing on motorcycles, thank you for pointing out the differences between a half ton full dress and a 200 pound scooter. Also for confirming that in 50 years you have never ridden off road where your feet regularly come off the pegs as part of staying on 2 wheels. I’m really trying to not be rude here but it’s a challenge to not call out the ridiculousness of the pride involved in simply trying to prove your beliefs are the only relevant or true ideas. I don’t know how many 1000 pound bikes you’ve owned or had extensively ridden (sitting on your buddy’s Road Glide doesn’t count), but I’ve moved my 963 pound Star Venture TC around parking lots, slow rolling in gravel and dirt campgrounds, and if you have ever actually done this you will know you absolutely need feet down or you get rubber up. Nobody has instructions anyone here to ride at anything more than a crawl with feet down, and only as a familiarization to the controls of the machine when a new user is not adept enough to focus on balance when they don’t even know the controls yet. At this point I’m simply going to bid you farewell because it becomes evident that some people’s egos will not allow them to learn new ideas or consider other thoughts they didn’t come up with. For everyone else, a word of warning, you will run into know-it-alls like this in your riding journey. When the many certified instructors I know teach the same ideas for beginners and one stranger on the internet claims that is wrong, stick with the professionals. There’s an old saying in motorcycling, “There’s two types of riders. Those who’ve laid one down and those who will.” These are the same people who accept that it’s a given you have to lay one down at some point if you ride so they take risks because it’s just a matter of time until they take their fall. The safety professional’s nightmare, the “it’s going to happen whether we try to stop it or not so why worry, just accept it.”, attitude which kills people on the job site. As a client once said to me on a project in Eastern Europe after I asked if the insulation being removed from the refinery equipment was checked for asbestos, “Of course it’s asbestos. Stop complaining, we all die from something.” Don’t listen to people like this, look for professionals and prepare to operate at the highest level you are capable of. Disregard the “my way is the only way” crowd unless there’s empirical evidence to show they are correct. One stranger on the internet contradicting an industry standard doesn’t fit that standard in my mind. Use caution when taking advice from people on the internet. Verify everything and don’t believe anything someone says without some verification, even my claims.
