The man who knew infinity I mean Srinivasan Ramanujan the most brilliant mind in the history of mathematics is known for the various mathematical proofs which he had given to the world, out of which the most famous one is sum of all natural number till infinity for which Ramanujan had entitled with the word infinity.For those of you who are unfamiliar with this series, which has come to be known as the Ramanujan Summation after a famous Indian mathematician named Srinivasa Ramanujan, it states that if you add all the natural numbers, that is 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on, all the way to infinity, you will find that it is equal to -1/12. Yup, -0.08333333333.
Don’t believe me? Keep reading to find out how I prove this, by proving two equally crazy claims:
1-1+1-1+1-1 ⋯ = 1/2
1-2+3-4+5-6⋯ = 1/4
First off, the bread and butter. This is where the real magic happens, in fact the other two proofs aren’t possible without this.
I start with a series, A, which is equal to 1-1+1-1+1-1 repeated an infinite number of times. I’ll write it as such:
A = 1-1+1-1+1-1⋯
Then I do a neat little trick. I take away A from 1
1-A=1-(1-1+1-1+1-1⋯)
So far so good? Now here is where the wizardry happens. If I simplify the right side of the equation, I get something very peculiar:
1-A=1-1+1-1+1-1+1⋯
Look familiar? In case you missed it, thats A. Yes, there on that right side of the equation, is the series we started off with. So I can substitute A for that right side, do a bit of high school algebra and boom!
1-A =A
1-A+A=A+A
1 = 2A
1/2 = A
This little beauty is Grandi’s series, called such after the Italian mathematician, philosopher, and priest Guido Grandi. That’s really everything this series has, and while it is my personal favourite, there isn’t a cool history or discovery story behind this. However, it does open the door to proving a lot of interesting things, including a very important equation for quantum mechanics and even string theory. But more on that later. For now, we move onto proving #2: 1-2+3-4+5-6⋯ = 1/4.
We start the same way as above, letting the series B =1-2+3-4+5-6⋯. Then we can start to play around with it. This time, instead of subtracting B from 1, we are going to subtract it from A. Mathematically, we get this:
A-B = (1-1+1-1+1-1⋯) - (1-2+3-4+5-6⋯)
A-B = (1-1+1-1+1-1⋯) - 1+2-3+4-5+6⋯
Then we shuffle the terms around a little bit, and we see another interesting pattern emerge.
A-B = (1-1) + (-1+2) +(1-3) + (-1+4) + (1-5) + (-1+6)⋯
A-B = 0+1-2+3-4+5⋯
Once again, we get the series we started off with, and from before, we know that A = 1/2, so we use some more basic algebra and prove our second mind blowing fact of today.
A-B = B
A = 2B
1/2 = 2B
1/4 = B
And voila! This equation does not have a fancy name, since it has proven by many mathematicians over the years while simultaneously being labeled a paradoxical equation. Nevertheless, it sparked a debate amongst academics at the time, and even helped extend Euler’s research in the Basel Problem and lead towards important mathematical functions like the Riemann Zeta function.
Now for the icing on the cake, the one you’ve been waiting for, the big cheese. Once again we start by letting the series C = 1+2+3+4+5+6⋯, and you may have been able to guess it, we are going to subtract C from B.
B-C = (1-2+3-4+5-6⋯)-(1+2+3+4+5+6⋯)
Because math is still awesome, we are going to rearrange the order of some of the numbers in here so we get something that looks familiar, but probably wont be what you are suspecting.
B-C = (1-2+3-4+5-6⋯)-1-2-3-4-5-6⋯
B-C = (1-1) + (-2-2) + (3-3) + (-4-4) + (5-5) + (-6-6) ⋯
B-C = 0-4+0-8+0-12⋯
B-C = -4-8-12⋯
Not what you were expecting right? Well hold on to your socks, because I have one last trick up my sleeve that is going to make it all worth it. If you notice, all the terms on the right side are multiples of -4, so we can pull out that constant factor, and lo n’ behold, we get what we started with.
B-C = -4(1+2+3)⋯
B-C = -4C
B = -3C
And since we have a value for B=1/4, we simply put that value in and we get our magical result:
1/4 = -3C
1/-12 = C or C = -1/12

    •Grandy's Theory was wrong:- A=(1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1...) If:infinite series end with -1 total sum is 0 elif: series end with +1 total sum was 1. So total sum of A is 0 or 1. (Hence proof)

    I was also thinking the same because the infinity is something which is not defined so if we add or subtract something it will be infinity so I think it's a big contradiction between quantum and maths he tried well and proved many equations but infinity is something which is beyond human thoughts

    Are ye aadhi adhuri information ko mat lekar jao, KZread channel wale aise hi pagal banate hai, mystery mystery bol ke Mathematical proofs me ek way of proof hai proof by contradiction, to ramanujan ne assume karke chala tha ki sum to infinity converging series hai kyuki unhe proof karna tha ki sum to infinity diverging hai (means always increasing) To ye sab process karne ke baad unhone proof kiya ki sum to infinity converging hai but value negative thi jo ki possible nahi hai, to contradiction se sum to infinity diverging hai, means always increasing and not finite.

    Nice information! Some years back I had a strange dream..Me and my friend were just roaming in the Universe (like we roam in Garden!!). We went to a place which appeared like a small black room. I told my friend that we have arrived at Minus Infinity! Then we explored that room and found that it had a window. We opened that window and saw that Plus Infinity (symbol) was shining brightly near by. So we concluded in my dream that Minus Infinity and Plus Infinity are very close to each other! It was a strange dream......not sure if it means something.......but it developed a keen interest in me for Infinity.

    I think ur dream is correct as entire universe presents many example of duality. Wave theory, principal of duality in physics. Visible and invisible world existing together. I am not from science background but think minus infinity and plus infinity may be side by side bcoz of some energy conservation principle.

    I am a bio student but still I have a different respect for ramanujan and his life story shown in the movie based on him and now after seeing the derivation one time only I can derive it even being a bio student 💪 it all depends on your skill if you are interest in understanding something y can do it it's so easy to derive this sum of all natural number is -1/12👌👌

    Owsm knowledge, but हमने infinity को infinity इसलिए कहा क्योंकि हम उसे infinity मानते है जबकि होगी तो वो भी finite value, infinty में से 1 घटाने से value infinty नही आनी चाहिए बल्कि (infinty-1) होनी थी बस यहीं गड़बड़ हो गई और butterfly effect अपना काम कर गया और sum of positive number भी negative आ गया

    कुछ भी लिख दिए भाई। यहाँ पर butterfly effect का क्या काम है? Butterfly effect होता है जब कोई छोटा सा action लंबे समय के बाद बड़ा सा effect ला दे। इसका नाम 'butterfly effect' इसलिए पड़ा क्योंकि एक वैज्ञानिक ने अपने hypothesis में कहा था की एक butterfly के पंख फड़फड़ाने से कुछ सालों बाद वो disturbed air अमेरिका के किसी सहर में तूफ़ान ला सकता है। और infinity-1= infinity ही होता है। रामानुजन ने GP का फार्मूला गलत इस्तेमाल किया जिसके कारण गलत उत्तर आया था।

    @@sbmishra7020 ok, क्या ocean से एक गिलास पानी निकलने के बाद ocean में पानी पहले जितना होगा उस ही तरह आप infinte में से जितना घटाओगे वो उतना ही कम हो जायेगा। और यहां butterfly effect का मतलब सिर्फ तितली के पंख हिलाने से disturbance ही नही हमने As a idiom use किया के किसी भी चीज में से कुछ भी घटाने पर जो बचेगा वो उसकी orignal value से उतना ही कम होगा जितना हमने घटाया था फिर चाहे हम infinty से ही क्यों न घटा रहे हों

Infinity-1=इंफिनिटी इसलियी होता है क्योंकि इंफिनिटी एक constant नहीं है। infinity एक तरीके से ऐसे समझीये: your body has a lot of electrons. If due to some reasons(like rubbing your body vigorously with wool ) your body loses some electrons, it doesn't reduces your body weight. वैसे ही एक ocean से एक गिलास पानी निकाल लेने से पानी कम तो जरूर हुआ परंतु वो इतना insignificant है कि आप उसे बहुत आसानी से neglect कर सकते हो और उससे आपके निस्कर्ष पर कोई असर नहीं पड़ेगा। वैसे रही बात रामानुजन की, तो उन्होंने पूरा का पूरा blunder mistake किया था अपने रिसर्च पेपर में। GP के फार्मूला में r>-1 लेना रहता है जिसमे r common ratio होता है। रामानुजन ने r=-1 ले लिया था। अगर आप कोशिश करेंगे तो उसी infinite sum को आप -1/8 के बराबर भी proof कर सकते है। मेरे एक दोस्त ने प्रूव किया है।
