Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are both types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), but they differ in several ways. Crohn's can affect any part of the digestive tract, from mouth to anus, and may cause patches of inflammation with healthy tissue in between. In contrast, Ulcerative Colitis primarily impacts the colon and rectum, causing continuous inflammation and ulcers in the innermost lining. Crohn's can result in deeper tissue inflammation and complications like strictures or fistulas, while Ulcerative Colitis typically involves surface inflammation. Symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss are common in both, but in Crohn's, they can vary greatly depending on the location and severity. Treatment approaches also differ; while medications and lifestyle changes are typical for both conditions, surgery may be more frequently required in severe cases of Crohn's, whereas Ulcerative Colitis may be cured by surgical removal of the colon.
