Back in the 1980’s I took my rather special fiesta XR2 , to the Kidderminster U.K. Kwikfit...... yes name and shame. My XR2 was rather special and really stood out from the crowd. They were special cars in those days. I arranged to take it in for an oil change , air filter etc... Just a minor service. Booked in at 8.30am, first one there . Left it with them, after they said be an hour or so. 11am I went back, it was still where I parked it and other customers cars in the shop. Lots of joking and fooling around going on. I saw guy t reception who apologised and said they had a rush on..... even though there was no one there but me at that time. He promised it would be next in the shop and if I return 2 hours later it will be done. 2 hours 15 mins later I returned. As I was walking up to the garage I heard this loud revving, wheel spinning and erratic driving. Yep you guessed it. It was my XR2 The lads did not notice me, as they were laughing too much as I walked straight into the shop. I went behind the counter straight into the office. Manager was as thick as shit Me “ manager do your staff treat all the customers cars like that?’ Manager ‘ no, no , they are just moving the cars around’, he heard it but did not even get up to look what was happening. I lost it with him, I am livid and he just looked at the damn floor. I took his name, and walked out. By now my car was in the shop. The kid getting out of the driving seat I grabbed him and threw him across the shop floor. I wanted to kill him. I was not violent as I cannot be for my job as I cannot have a criminal record I got in my car and drove off. I rang Kwikfit head office. They gave me an address to write to. No internet in those days. I wrote many letters. Not one reply Lesson here is...... KWIKFIT ARE POORLY TRAINED KIDS THAT HAVE NO MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE. THEY ARE WANNABE MECHANICS WITH NO RESPECT FOR YOUR CAR OR YOUR FAMILY SAFETY. I WOULD NOT TRUST THEM TO ADJUST THE SADDLE ON MY KIDS BIKE. IT IS WORRYING THAT THEY STILL OPERATE AND NOW OFFER EVEN MORE SERVICES FOR THE MOTORISTS. SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE AND GO ELSEWHERE. ........ RANT OVER .....

My friends used to work for Kwik-Fit and I know for a fact the staff would charge for work that didn't need done. Also, if a car came in that one of the staff also owned they would try to charge the customer for parts that the staff needed for their cars and never fitted them. Kwik-Fit should be avoided at all costs no matter what the branch.

Well, that happens when customers go to these newly arising big company chain workshops, instead of calling at local garages that have served them well for decades. We have such companies in Germany, as well. Those chains normally go for the easy work, letting us single local workshops do the complicated stuff, that quite seldom pays off. This rids us of the healthy mixture of easy and complicated work. To survive, we will have to raise our prices, or else go down the drain. Please support your local single workshop. He then told me that as the exhaust system was not in sections i'd need the lot changed (never heard of that before and you can physically see it is in sections). I then asked if any ID, specifically birth certificate, would be required, when he was stupid enough to say "No, why?" I simply said "To show you I wasnt bloody born yesterday". Took it to another garage who successfully replaced the cat for me within a couple of hours.

I worked for Smiley for 3 years when I left school, They are now called National Tyres & Autocare. The wheel alignment & fluid replacement were were 2 of their favourite procedures they would charge for and not perform . The premium Oil change was ALWAYS Duckhams budget oil. Also i think i seen about 10 flat tyres being repaired the whole time I worked there. They would always say the tyre had a puncture on the sidewall, so it would then need to be replaced . They had monthly quotas for tyres & exhaust sales.

A tip for everyone, even if you're not mechanically minded; invest in a very minor amount of tools (a jack, a few spanners, a torch) and do some basic research on your vehicle. On days where you need something doing on the car, or the MOT is due, do your own simple checks around the car first. Or if you can't manage that, try and get a friend or family member to take a quick look. Then, at least when you go the garage, you know just enough to not get scammed... "Your brakes need doing mate".... "Er, no they don't, I just checked em. Bye, I'm off to another garage!" Also, with the internet in everyone's pocket nowadays, do a quick check on any parts they quote you for. You may find they're quoting much more for labour and parts than is worth it!

He then came back to my brother in law and remarked that his tyres are very near the tread depth indicators at the rear and the front tyres was level with the indicators, brother told him he knew of the tyres and the condition, next thing the fitter walks away and then some posh bloke walks around the car, examining the tyres, posh bloke walks away and then comes back & then gives me brother prices for 4 new tyres! Brother in law was adamant Halfords was NOT changing his tyres because they was so damn expensive! Posh bloke who happened to be the manager said bluntly that if you drive that vehicle out with such dangerous tyres he will have no option but to call the police! Brother paid for the oil & filter change and then told the manager to go ahead and ring 101 about his tyres, manager said he'll do it later...Chicken shit. Brother in law went to his local MOT station and asked for them to check his tyres, all 4 tyres was 'just' legal but would require changing asap. He got the MOT guy to fill in a sheet to show the tyres had been checked and was signed & stamped, brother went back to Halfords and thrust that notice into the face of that manager, brother also phoned 101 and asked for the police to see if his car had been reported for defective tyres, they'd had no such report. Fuck Halfrauds.

This is why I go to my little local family run garage for anything I need. My car got a couple of advisories on my exhaust brackets and front tyres were apparently worn, plus my allignment was off and these thieving cocksnots wanted to charge me £750+ VAT for 3 exhaust brackets, £250 for tracking and allignment then £85 per tyre!! So I went down to my local garage (Manley Tyres and Exhausts) in Birkenhead, and alls that needed doing was my backbox, they got the part that day and charged me £50 all in. They used lasers to check my tracking, looked at my tyres (which were fine) and advised against going back to Kwik Fit for anything. Oh and the same tyres that kwikfit tried to charge me £85 each for.. My local garage had the exact same ones for £40. 2 years on, my Ford Focus is still running absolutely perfectly and I've done a lot of learning about my car so I can try and see the problem myself before ever getting ripped off. These big wig companies like Kwik Fit prey on the weak and its disgusting that they break apart someones pride and joy just to keep their figures up. My local garage is a family run, honest business and I'd advise everyone to avoid places like kwikfit. I'm only 24 and been driving just over 2 years, so my insurance and what I pay for my car isn't exactly cheap, but young drivers and the elderly will go the popular garages expecting the better service as they're everywhere, its so corrupt and downright wrong. Daylight robbery at its best. Bunch of robbing, disrespectful bastards.

I have worked in the trade for forty plus years and have a degree in mechanical engineering, this has always gone on to some degree, the bigger chains seem to work this method to perfection and see most customers (particularly women) as easy targets. I am now retired so sometimes use smaller garages for work to save me the hassles, had these tactics tried on me but once they see you know what is what they back off. Some of the smaller independent garages seem to be adopting these methods as a way of increasing profits. With the massive hourly rates being charged nowadays I just see this as greed driven, always aimed at the quick and easy to replace parts. Garages are no different to any other business there will always be good and bad one's, owner's would do well to learn a little about their cars that would go a long way to preventing this behaviour in the trade.

All fast fit centre managers are under pressure to drive sales. They put pressure on staff and B/S like this happens. Many years ago when I worked in the trade an old gent came in for a full service. My manager said ‘oh, that’s old Fred he’s a regular so just take the plugs out and give ‘em a clean, steam wash the engine bay and park it up’ Fred was charged for a full service. Two weeks later Fred returned because his car was making a grinding noise when he applied the brake. My manager said ‘give ‘im and ‘is Mrs a lift to the town centre then on the way back visit the scrap yard and get some rear drums and shoes.’ I did and fitted them. Fred wasn’t charged and went away happy because he was grateful for the lift to do his shopping. I felt sick to have deceived such a nice old chap and left that business. A few years later the owner did do time for fraud but he had conned and ripped off hundreds of people by then.

One of them was never repaired properly; indeed it was still 'blowing' when I traded it in. I'm not surprised to see they've never improved three decades later. At the time, they were employing kids on YTS - I think it was an abbreviation for Young, Thick & Stupid. Why on this Earth people still use KwikFit is beyond me. Find a decent, reliable TRAINED local mechanic. Customer retention and word of mouth is vital for independent guys; who have a passion for doing the job properly.

After telling my dad the story we had a check of his brakes and discs and there was nothing wrong with them. We took pictures and wrote to the managing director who sent out two senior managers within 2 days because we threatened to go to the Police for fraud. We were given £100 compensation, a letter of apology, the exhaust was replaced for free and we were given a new set of pads and discs to be replaced when the time did eventually come. No one in my family has ever went near Kwik Fit again.

They lied about not being legally allowed to give your grandad his car back. It's his car, they aren't allowed to withold it from him unless he has failed to pay his bill. In that situation, if his brakes or tyres genuinely were dangerous, all the garage has to do is to report this to the customer, stress the fact it is dangerous and have written reports that the defects have been noticed and the customer refused to have the work done, this clears the place of any responisbilty.

If a mechanic genuinely feels that taking the car back on the road will put others at risk. he has the right to call the police who will send out a vehicle inspector who can issue the necessary paperwork to prohibit the car from being taken back on the public road. These inspectors normally work with the police when they stop a car that is completely un- roadworthy or falling apart.

In one case what i thought was my exhaust was actually rattling heat shield and they just fixed the heat shield and in another case they got me on my way in 10 minutes when my battery was fucked. In some cases i wonder if they have crossed their wires on some of these vehicles and confused what work needed doing. When you have over 500 branches you are bound to get a few who are a bit crooked and trying to sell work that doesn't need doing.

I used them twice in my life for exhausts parts ONLY because I couldn't buy the part and fit it myself for as cheap as they did it with 3 year cover on the part. HOWEVER I fix all my cars myself and always have and every time I use them they tell me it needs £500 worth of work. the look they give me when I told them I am a mechanic and know better than the rubbish they are telling me I just don't do it as my job because it doesn't pay enough!! and to add insult to injury both times I let them loose on my motor I had to refit the exhaust myself because it fell apart BOTH TIMES!! funny how it never did after I fitted the same part!! ... I once told a mate to go there with a bust rear section of exhaust just because of the price and warned them they would be told it needed £500 worth of work and I would probably need to refit it at a later date but it's my friend so it was a free job if that happened ( it did by the way and I did refit it for free) .... on cue they did ring her and say it needs £500 worth of work on the nose!! so I went in with my mate to check what they were saying, they pointed out a hanger on the middle section of the exhaust was broken free to which I said I would weld it in 10 mins the "mechanic" (cough cough rubbish cough) said all shirty and with attitude "oh you can weld stainless can you" to which I replied it's not stainless A: because it's rusty and flaking away and B: it's magnetic non ferrous metal is non magnetic but the mechanic (cough) still tried to tell me it's stainless even after I had proven I know more about the job than he clearly did!! . funny how i welded it up and my weld lasted until the vehicle was scrapped some years later!! the rest of the work did not need doing it past an mot a few weeks later and non of the dangerous faults showed up because there is no way I would let a dangerous car on the road!! now I tell people this horror story and tell everyone that the low price they offer is not worth the rubbish they spout!!

That's a bloody good local garage he has there. He walked in with a list of things that (don't) need fixing and they could have easily said they do need fixing and charged him for it and made a cheeky profit but they had the decency and honesty to not take advantage of him and tell him the truth. That kind of honesty to customers is becoming more and more rare these days. Another big company charges something like £15 to fit a headlight bulb. In my car it's literally six motions. Twist left, pull, remove bulb, replace bulb, push, twist right. Job done. £15 please.

MickMaan I think servicing should be part if the driving test. Just basic things like oil change bulbs etc but most people think it's complicated it's no different from changing a bulb from your house. There's tons of information on specific car forums & KZread about how you do these things why can't everyone try and learn something about there cars, it's actually really satisfying to do the work yourself and know your not been conned. oh & did I mention a dam sight cheaper:) sod the stamp in the service book it's worthless just keep recipes if it bothers you.

@@xxpug_unicornxx184 Not true some cars require you remove the headlight unit and or the whole bumper just to replace a bulb and in some cars the engine bay is cramped its actually very hard to change the bulb yourself. However there are lots of cars where changing the bulb is very simple too mine being one of them.

Kwik fit are not mechanics. They are fitters. When I had a company car thats were we had to go for tyre's. Local indy was about two thirds the price. Remember YOU are paying for the fancy show/waiting room, not only here, but at main dealers.

True...they can't afford a bad reputation....the dealers and chain shops are the worst. They don't give a fuck. They are profit driven and have a lot of idiots they have to support. Private owners don't have all the useless staffers and head office to support. every town has a few good honest mechanics.

Hardly. They want to make a profit also. Franchisees are self employed, they just share the company brand for other benefits.

Never EVER take your vehicle to a big chain mechanic like KwikFit or any other. The best places to go are the independent, smelly, untidy, greasy garages. You know the ones, you walk in and there's old tyres and bits of engines and crap all over the place.

What can a Mechanic say I’m ashamed and proud at the same time, proud of the good mechanics who go out of their way to help customers and ashamed of the one’s that rip customers who need repairs to their vehicles. All I can say is I’m sorry for the bad mechanics ripping you off and hope you’re vehicle is not left in worse condition then it went in for repairs. I have seen and worked with all kinds of mechanics in California, British Columbia and UK for the last 30 years mostly good mechanics a few not so good but it’s the owners and manager’s of the establishment that are the ones at fault most of the time pushing mechanics to get more work then needed and most mechanics don’t get paid a lot to begin with but that’s no excuse to rip anybody off.

I was in getting a puncture fixed and I watched a guy walk in to collect his car after an MOT and he was told the car was dangerous and that they couldn't let him remove it from the garage for due to their safety concerns. He kicked off and they got him arrested. Sounds the same as this story except the guy didn't kick off and was allowed to leave. The branch I was in the staff were refusing to let the guy take his car away.

Ten years on from this video little has changed. The strong marketing machine they have in place will always bring new unsuspecting victims into there premises to be fleeced using safety as the premise to upsell and repair lots of non existent faults and gain as much added value profit as possible. Once they have your car in for a puncture its time for them to print there own pay packet. Use your head and go to a reputable independent.

Selling parts you don't need is how they made their money and still do probably. One of their big favourites was always 'YOUR BRAKE DISCS are scored and grooved and need replaced' (with pads of course). Some scoring/grooving on older brake discs is normal, the pads bed into them. Brake discs hardly ever need replaced unless you've driven the car with pads worn down to the metal. I've had cars since 1983 of all different ages and I've NEVER had to replace DISCS, not even on a car that had done 140,000 miles which is more than halfway to the MOON.
