Kuwait has so many street cats & purebreds. Here’s why-and how to help!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Kuwait has no animal shelter, leading to a widespread issue of cats being dumped outdoors. Individual rescuers are stepping in to help these cats, who are often Persian, Scottish fold, British shorthair, and Arabian mau, and typically seeking homes for them abroad. Thank you Laila (@rescueforwinston) and Mona (@mcclq8) for sharing your stories, and for all you do to help cats.

Thank you so much, Layla and Mona, from the bottom of my heart for saving the lives of so many of these furry baby darling kittens and cute darling adult cats. May God continue to blessvand protect you for the most noble work that you both are doing for these darling furry angels. So sad to know know that people just dump their cats and kittens at a different environment just because they have decided not to keep them any more. I hope and pray that God in his Divine Wisdom will bring about a change in the attitudes of these kinds of people.

WELCOME TO KUWAIT! I recently took in a kitten from the streets and I could easily see that she was dumped as a kitten bc someone tried to breed their cat and was unable to care for her. I took her to the vet she's clean and healthy, and I am in the process of getting her all her vaccines. She has long fur and is pure white, probably wasn't a street cat for too long she was 5 months old. I heard some rescue organizations here are trying the TNR strategy I hope it works

They seem like wonderful cats. As a long-time feline rescue volunteer with chronic health problems, I would love one. I need an affectionate baby to love when I’m stuck in bed. My Burmese just passed away at 19…he was the cat I was closest to in life. A constant cuddle companion! I’ve had two random bred cats just like that, though. I adopted them as seniors, so I didn’t know them as long but they bonded very closely with me. Both looked like they had British Shorthair in them. Big bones…big teddy bears! I guess I felt closest to the Burmese because he followed me to every room, and advocated for my needs with my carer, when I was ill. He would not eat until I was fed.

We’re starting to have a similar situation here in Saudi Arabia. Many people adopted cats during the pandemic due to boredom and not being able to go out, and now that life is back to normal they’re claiming they’re way too busy to take care of them so they throw them out. My mom and I try bringing food to those cats especially in our neighborhood, there were usually 3-5 cats but these last few weeks the numbers are increasing and I think we see over 12 cats just in our neighborhood. Really heartbreaking to see

breeders and purebred cats aren't the problem of overpopulation. It is all the alley cats, that owners refuse to spay or neuter and then let them roam the streets, or just dump them in the streets per this video. Look at ALL these cats---99% random bred, not purebred. The Arabian Mau breed she talks about, not purebreds either. A purebred is a cat that you KNOW several generations of it's ancestry. Boy there are a lot of eye infections in all those cat 😢 I really liked that smoke/tabby young male cat and the one she pointed out as an Arabian Mau---they looked fairly healthy.

Unfortunately, these cats are mostly dumped when people travel during the summer...nobody can find anyone to take care of the cats and it is very hard to bring cats with you on the plane (it is too hot during the summer for cats to travel unless it is in the cabin which very few airlines allow). So, most people either put the cats in a cat hotel which costs about 30 USD per day or they have to sell them or release them outside. It is a very sad situation.

I have always felt this way! In the US, I used to teach cat care classes to rural and urban communities, through 4-H. We’d hold free cat shows to reward good care and socialization of random bred cats, after the education series. I’ve seen kids and parents grow so much in their relationships with animals! I also do feline rescue. People dump cats near farms and in cities, thinking they’ll find shelter and a food source. They live painfully, and die horribly. Statistics in the 2000s said if we each adopted 3 cats, we would solve the problem. I know it’s not an opinion for everyone but, if it is, please adopt! ❤️‍🩹

If the Arabian Mau is anything like an Abyssinian, they are the sweetest, most devoted cats. These rescuers are amazing and I hope they're able to provide education to help people understand that dumping a house cat on the street can be a death sentence because they don't have the survival skills of a cat born on the street. 🐾🐾 Thank you for sharing your experiences Hannah.

That black and orange eyed Scottish fold is haunts my dreams 🥰What a perfect cat. I wish I could just fly there and bring him home. This is one of those painful problems with no really easy solution besides responsible breeding and caretaking, but even that can fall short. I’m glad I’m not in charge of fixing it. But I’ll defiantly be adopting. (If anyone has a black and orange eyed round kitty in the states or Canada let me know! Lol)

I volunteer to feed the street cats in my local area with @Reemislandcats and have rescued some cats, who I'm still trying to re home and try and TNR some as well but we have just a few volunteers and only a few individuals help with fostering and rescuing etc and vet bills here are very high. It would be good to have a national programme of neutering and vaccination and more education and awareness on this issue.

Sending dumped cats overseas to be adopted is not an impactful change. It is shifting the burden onto other countries (in this instance, America), where additional animals (cats in this instance) must be euthanized because the American didn’t adopt a cat from the shelter down the road, but from Kuwait instead! p.s. I know this sounds mean, and I am not intending that. It’s just that we must all wake up and realize that globalization does not solve anything, it just shifts the misery away from one country onto another, at the expense of the animals, and allows our leaders to remain unaccountable for helping solve pet overpopulation.

This is soooo sad. I wanted a Scottish Fold so bad because I just think they're the cutest, but to get one here is like 1200-1800$ and there weren't any in shelters around the time I was looking. I ended up getting the next best thing, a little orange boy who's ears had been bent and broken and eaten away at by mites before he went to the shelter. Now he wakes up in my bed every morning. I call him my little makeshift Scottish Fold and I couldn't be happier.
