Lovely tribute. I could not fail to recognize my dear father in the sequence in Kurt Sanderling's return to his home in Arys near what's now Kalliningrad. Same jeans, same braces, same height. My father was a conscripted Wehrmacht soldier, part of the Nazi invasion of Russia. He was wounded near Kharkov, as it happens, where Kurt Sanderling had previously conducted its orchestra. My father deserted the German army. He introduced me to classical music. He was like Kurt Sanderling, a mensch. Kurt Sanderling was one of the very greatest conductors of all time.

Wunderbar. One of the truly great conductors of the twentieth century. I only understand a few words in German but I enjoyed it enormously. Thanks a lot for posting it.

Sanderling documentary looks fascinating, even though I do not speak a single word of German. Does a version exist with English subtitles? Too bad nothing seems to be said of Sanderling's extrordinary way with late Mahler. Why does the clip of Kissin and Rattle Grieg Concerto 1st Movement get clipped short?
