Currywurst, Döhnoff Villa, Ostpreußen, house in Potsdam, Frederick the Great on the wall... The German attitudes are fun and give the performances a certain flavour. Main thing is he's a very good musician and can rehearse an orchestra.

Slow and ponderous? Compared to whom? Klemperer? Most younger conductors do everything too fast. It takes maturity to realize that every note and every nuance contributes to the drama of the performance. I really like his Bruckner. I think it is dramatic and soulful. Haven't listened yet to much of his Beethoven but I will and make some comments.

It's not really ponderous compared with Klemperer. Klemperer doesn't make weird mannerisms in a way Thielemann does with Schumann's music for example, that sudden retardando that distorts the architecture of the music. But as a Wagner conductor there's no better conductor on the planet as of now.

I heard him conduct Wagner in Bayreuth, he received a prolonged standing ovation at the place that the audience has very high expectations. In my opinion he should have received the Position at Berlin but alas the always politically correct Germans gave it to a Russian. Oh well maybe someday they will come to there senses.

truly a strong character with a deep understanding for what he is doing. but also kind of a "rampensau", meaning that he likes to present himself and his thoughts. i am glad he's a musician and not a politician because this way he can use his conservative thinking for good. his movements and general mindset could become a little more laid back and relaxed for my taste, but i guess that's something that comes with age.

But then you knew that, which is why you asked, no?” Touché...

An ultraconservative German classical musician is going to be a hard pill for many to swallow because of history. Clearly he is not an easily accessible person, which is true of many people. Nonetheless, isn't it HIS choice to focus his professional effort where he feels it belongs.? Love or dislike any performer, he or she having spent years devoting their lives to a given discipline owe no one to do repertoire they don't like.

He said on several occasions (mostly on german media, I think) that for a long time he did not feel ready for Mahler‘s „fatalism“. He even sees a strong contrast to Wagner here, who despite the whole „drama“ in his mature operas always ends on a positive note of redemption or with a new beginning whereas in Mahler (as Thielemann once literally said) he hears/feels the absolute finality in the music (especially in his 9) und thought for a long time that he still was too immature to approach this music properly. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gHqhs6amcti2p6Q.html Here, Thielemann talks about Mahler in the beginning and compares him to Wagner and Bruckner (in English!).

He did the germanic Kapellmeisterschule like the real german conductors used to do in the old days, conducting in Gelsenkirchen and Karslruhe before climbing slowly and surely upwards towards Nurnberg and Berlin, and you call him a FAKE? What about the market-products of today who do their first operas ever directly in La Scala or the Met jus cos they have tight connections?...

yu cao well considering that the Wagner family personally loves him as a conductor, Alex's critisism is pretty much made up out of thin air and solely based on personal preferences. I mean Beethoven is definitely not his "master section" in comparison to others as I'd call it. But I love him in the Bruckner - Wagner section and (in my opinion for ex.) nobody conducts the Tannhäuser Ouvertüre better than he does.
