KUROSAWA MODE ENGAGED || Opera Singer Breaks Down "Mirror of the World" from Guilty Gear

Ойындар

Man. I'm glad I've been in a guilty gear kick and am grateful to patreon for continuing to fuel that kick. This is such neat music and this is definitely the most tame of the lot lately. But still so fun.

A part of Baiken's lore that you didn't read (at least not in the video) is that in Strive she finally lets go of her revenge by meeting and confiding in Delilah (Bedman's little sister) who also wants to destroy That Man. Baiken is able to overcome her trauma of her family's death through the comfort of a comrade who has went through a similar thing, and ultimately creates a sort of new family with her. This is also probably why the lyrics at the end of Mirror of the World are "I am not the exile" and "You are not the exile" referring to herself and Delilah.

"Baiken's pissed" is a great summary of her character pre-Strive.

You were pretty much on the money with analysis of the character. One point i want to mention that for me this song is a internal dialog: first "voice" singing "Mantra of Light" trying to get forgivnes/disolve himself of sin, while the other pushes back on this idea (ex. "God knows, that no voice can be heard by the damned"). In final chorus that argument resolves with sentimen that Baiken accepts who she is ("I am the exile") , even if her sins not cleansed yet, she will do everything to make up for them ("The hardest road lies ahead, I will be a mirror of the world") so we get both "voices" at the same time

The bass in this song is crazy. Favorite bit about the chant is that it ends with “rokkon shoujo” and since shoujo can also mean “girl”, it sounds like “rock on, girl!”

A cool element of the song that gets lost in translation is that the chant is a Buddhist mantra for purifying oneself. The first half of the song is essentially the character stuck in a cycle of violence > purification > hopelessness > violence...

I love this song so much; it's such a great piece that shows baiken's journey from brutality into letting go of her anger and moving forwards in life. The use of the mantra of light (the japanese chorus part) is also interesting, since in shingon buddhism it is associated with freeing deceased people from their accumulated bad karma and a possible rebirth in hell.

This song is easily my favorite of strives soundtrack. I love the fact that after each verse, where she insults herself and the background singers immediately kick back in, you can hear Baiken laugh at them for wanting to still be with her. Another great detail is that Baiken yells “No Forgiveness!” and the background singers flip this by saying “Necessary” changing the meaning of the lyric from “I’m not worthy of forgiveness” to “you don’t need to be forgiven.” Easily one of my favorite parts is that the background singers have background singers that yell the last verse of each line, making them sound much more aggressive. In the finale these extra background singers are gone because Baiken isn’t interpreting their words as harmful and out to “force” her to be “better” (people with trauma tend to push away those who want to help them for this reason). Edit: Another detail I just remembered is that Baiken and the background singers lyrics never overlap until the very end when she’s finally started her journey towards bettering herself.

There's a couple of benchmarks in Strive themes regarding their length that oftentimes feels quite intentional. They're all at least 3 minutes long, but the majority of them hover around the 4 and a half to 5 and a half minute mark. The songs that approach 6 minutes and especially the ones that surpass that threshold, you know something special is about to be heard. Let Me Carve Your Way, a song you've already reacted to, is famous for its final section, which in regular gameplay can only be heard in matches that *really* stretch out the clock and go the max distance allowed by the systems of the game, and I think this is purposeful because that section is one of the most vulnerable most heartfelt things I've heard in a song ever. It's hidden. If a Zato player ever gets to that point in the song in a real match I'm sure the mental power up from hearing it would be immense. Baikens theme (and also Asukas theme which you've listened to) go EVEN LONGER. I don't think it's even possible to reach the end of either of them. In Baikens case it is likely because that final section shows the resolution of her arc in which she gives up on revenge, an arc which players didn't actually get to see until months after her release into the game when they finally released new story mode content. I really like "I am not the exile" followed by "You are not the exile" at the end, you can take it a couple of ways. Either it's calling out to the listener, telling them whatever struggles they have, they are not the exile. Alternatively it's Baiken calling out to Delilah (the little girl you saw when you listened to Bedman?s theme), seeing as they both gave up on their revenge simultaneously, for and because of one another. There are a lot of orphans in Guilty Gear, and their dynamics are shown a little bit in Guilty Gears Another Story DLC. Johnny managed to create his own found family after being orphaned, and that also resulted in the dozen orphans he adopted an opportunity to heal from their trauma. Baiken didn't get either of those luxuries until a lot later. Not even Anji could pull her from her revenge, until she finally met Delilah, another little girl obsessed with revenge, and she saw herself in Delilah as if looking into a mirror. That's when she finally resolved to put it all away and have an attempt at a happy life, finding her own found family with Delilah and Anji. I'd love if you listened to Requiem from Guilty Gear Strive! The Midnight Carnival, aka I-Nos boss theme from X2, was I believe the first song you listened to from Guilty Gear and I remember you being really interested in I-No from it. Well her theme in Strive, Requiem, spells it ALL out super explicitly, while also having probably my favorite vocal performance from Naoki in the whole series. Other than that, a new DLC character dropped a couple days ago, and brought a new theme with him which is super jazzy. The characters name is Slayer and his theme is called Ups and Downs if you wanna check that out!

A few lyric corrections: "This is her way"-> (background: "NO FORGIVENESS!") "Necessary." "My vengeance will be a sacrifice then kill the pain" -> "My vengeance will be sacrificed. The pain kills the pain." One of the big themes of the song's ending is Baiken letting go of her desire for vengeance, and finally moving on into the future - she is not the exile. Part of that is how much she has allowed others in, and a desire to protect another character from winding up in a similarly brutal and single-minded quest for vengeance. The chanting in the song is the Buddhist Mantra of Light, a blessing for somebody who dies with bad karma. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantra_of_Light

sucks that the most visually interesting lyrics videos are made with the fastest interpretations of the lyrics. (A.B.A.'s lyrics were basically revealed early, because people just couldn't hear them correctly). I get it, in youtube space, being the first one is important. But I've come to dislike these lyrics videos, because they often mishear stuff. I also wish they just released the lyrics with the songs, instead of releasing them with the official album release. Things like spotify lyrics don't get often updated after the public decides what the common hearing is, instead of what is actually there.

A former resident of a colony of endangered Japanese people. Baiken is a survivor of a gear attack of her childhood home where she lost her left eye, right arm and both parents in the incident. She would then spend years as a fugitive on the run as Japanese people are disallowed from leaving the colonies they live in and she wanders the world in search of the man responsible only recently learning to put aside her desire for vengeance in order to help those suffering as she has

  • @kaialone
    @kaialone21 күн бұрын

It should be noted that the title of this song "Mirror of the World" heavily ties into Baiken's current character resolution (which is also why it only comes up at the end of the song) Her life-long friend Anji briefly entrusts her with taking care of Delilah (Bedman's sister) a young girl who also lost her family because of That Man. Baiken is shocked to learn that Delilah carries a deep desire for revenge, despite only being a child, to the point of putting herself in great danger. Baiken was the same way as a kid, but it's only through seeing herself "reflected" in someone else like that that she can see how cruel she's been to herself growing up. So, she decides to convince Delilah, who'd acted as her "mirror", to give up on their revenge together, and instead go on living. Through this epiphany, Baiken awakens to an ability that allows her to reflect others' own insecurities and doubts as they fight her, allowing them to have clarity, like she did. Hence, "I will be a mirror of the world."

It's always "break off all vexations". CloudDrop usually gets lyrics wrong, but Mirror of The World is definetely the worst offender there, as almonst all of the chorus is wrong. You'd be better off looking at the Wiki for the lyrics. All Characters from Season 1 have theirs officially released, for others it's more a community effort with some clarifications from Naoki on Twitter (except for Symphony, which he leaked completely). Upw and Downs is still undergoing changes, but the current version of the page seems to be pretty correct (CD also has almost the same as that too, surprisingly)

If I might make a bit of a suggestion for future videos that use lyrics uploads, CapnBooker tends to be a more accurate channel and frequently updates their lyrics to match official ones! CloudDrop doesn't reupload videos when official or more accurate lyrics are presented, so it tends to be a bit messier. For example the start of the song is "nan man da bu", which is a buddhist mantra, but CloudDrop labelled it as "madaru", and "this is her way" was actually "no forgiveness necessary" (this isn't to hate on CloudDrop cause the mix of gameplay with the lyrics makes it look really good, but for the sake of analysis CapnBooker is just an easier resource) Just thought that might be a helpful resource since a part of these videos is dissecting the lyrics to parse the character, rly love these uploads!

The chant is the Mantra of Light of Buddhist tradition. It's a prayer given to the deceased to remove a soul's senses and connection to the world to free them for a better reincarnation. To leave all their "vexations" behind and move on to a new life. Basically, the song is about Baiken "killing" her old self, sacrificing her vengeance and pain on the hope that her new life free from such "vexations" will be a better life, to move forward as a "mirror of the world", or the present, instead of being a "ghost of her name" locked within the past. It's a hopefully prayer for a better future after a journey of doubt and fear of losing what drove her.

everyone else in the comment section has summed up baikens lore nicely, so id like to recommend "ups and downs" for the next guilty gear ost reaction. it just came out along with slayer, and i think youll enjoy it a lot, since its a lot more relaxed in terms of is meaning, especially when comparing it to themes like baikens

Baiken's story in Strive is such a big part of the song it's a shame you missed it. Protecting the Japanese colony only takes you to the guitar solo, everything after that is from strive. Biaken meets a little girl who has lost her whole live to violence and has resolved to seek revenge against the perpetrator, That Man. Basically she is a "Mirror" of Baiken as a child. Baiken, knowing the choices she has made and where that has led her, knows what awaits this child if she walks the same path that she walked. And so, Baiken, who has lived her life for vengance makes a choice to save this child. "My Vengeance will be sacrificed. Pain kill the pain. The hardest road lies ahead. I will be a Mirror of the World!"

ah yes, my main's theme. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of vocals, but the guitars are so heavy on this they're more than enough for me to enjoy this theme. with that said, even though I think it's a good theme, I don't think it's a good fighting game specifically, especially for a fast game like GG strive, since the song basically starts after a 40 sec intro, and in 40 seconds a round has probably already gone by. 4:22 I mean, she lost her parents, her village, her eye and her arm, all in one night, and her little story in strive is all about regaining a little of that lost reality ( 7:39 ), so yeah it's amazing how you can get so much background off of a theme

Hey! I think this is the video for cloudrop? Might be best to avoid their lyrics videos, cause a lot of the time the lyrics can be inaccurate; it can be hard to parse some of the words in the songs, and we don't actually have any official lyrics for a lot of the songs. However, the vocalist for most of these songs drops a lot of lyrics so that we have more accurate understandings of what the song is actually saying, and for a lot of the characters we have, later on, gotten the full, official lyrics for the songs. Cloudrop doesn't update these lyrics, and as a result, the lyrics we now know are inaccurate. For example, for this song, we have the full official lyrics of the song that was released with tha hard copy of the "Necessary Discrepancy" album, and now these lyrics are outdated. I'd recommend going to a different channel, CapnBooker for the lyric videos for these songs instead, as they regularly update the lyrics for these songs, even when the vocalist just drops a few lines from the song on Twitter. Anyway, it was a great video!! You were spot on with Baiken's character and your overall interpretation of the song.

The passage: "I'm the ghost of my name" can just as easily be heard as "I'm the ghost of vengeance", which both work for the character, but the second one being more indicative of how the drive for vengeance has left Baiken hollow.

The song is about Baiken moving past her vengeance and violence. The chants are Buddhist, seeking forgiveness and absolution. She is the time exile because her anger and vengeance is no longer in sync with the times. The arc of her story (and of the song) is to "cut away all vexations" and "become a mirror of the world" - to lay down her quest for vengeance and become peaceful like the world around her.

Baiken is my favorite female character in fiction. Which makes me even happier that you basically broke her down perfectly just by listening to the song. She is calm. She is extremely angry. And most importantly - she lets go of her revenge, because there are more important things in her life now than just throwing it away.
