Pretty cool, yes... But I never figured out it's utility. It doesn't look like a combat ability, and can't be used to torture someone because the victim won't feel pain. What's the point of it ?

@@bellerophon6897 I think it is pretty useful in combat. From what I deduced, the fish itself can be a companion in combat. While the victim may not feel pain, they still lose parts of their body, as we can see this assassin can no longer move.

this version is dark and more about the troope killing the mafia, i feel like the 2011 version is actually more about avenging uvo, the music in 2011 helps a lot with that, it feels more delicate and symbolic, either way both versions are pure art

I first saw this version, this was actually my favorite back then (before the Chimeras). This arc was so intense, it was like a cinematic experience. With Kurapika's rage, his fight with Uvogin, and Pakunoda's delimma, I remember so vividly thinking this arc was crazy! I will always choose this version of York Shin arc because the 2011 version didnt give me the same rollercoaster experience

Man, the music and color...this is the reason why i still love the 1999 version. More tension displayed and the music suits the mood of the situation.

A 90’s kid will forever cherish this moment. The remake was good, but the colorful nen in the original is giving me life.

本誌連載中の過去編を読んだあとに、このクロロの鎮魂歌のシーンを見ると、クロロのウヴォーギンへの深い感情を感じて、感慨深い。

当時見た時は、仲は良いけど死人が出たとしても（ノブナガを除いて）冷静に対処していくクールな集団ってイメージだったけど 改めて見ると、クロロの「派手にやれ」でその意味が十二分に伝わって、みんなが思う存分弔ってるシーンなんだなって思ってめちゃくちゃ感情移入してしまった ノブナガも知っていればこっちに参加したかったんじゃないかな

That's why I said "misunderstood of concept of requiem". There's no music when Chrollo was conducting in HxH world so it's obvious that Chrollo meant the sound of destruction IS the requiem for Uvo.

ウヴォーギンへのレクイエムで切ないシーンなのに、恐ろしく速い手刀を見逃さなかったおっさんでジワジワくる

1999 version is very artistic. Actual requiem music isn’t requiem for the uvo who loves fighting. The sound of gun, scream and explosion is best requiem for him. 05:08 Chrollo said to the moon that uvo-san, can you hear it with battle sound. 05:14 The moon is November moon. 11 is Uvo’s number. 05:42 That gunshot in the air is as if uvo’s sprits raise highly, and bullet breaks helicopter. Uvo’s sprits raise highly while breaking something or killing people. Of course, the moon in the background is refers to uvo (November moon). “November moon is guided highly and 【calmly】” from neon’s poem. It means that uvo Rest In Peace. It is said that calmly, so intense music isn’t fit this scene. The combination of Peaceful music(calm part) with battle sound(passion part) is amazing. It is like uvo’s sprits rest in *Peace* by battle which members of spiders play for uvo. And I think that 1999 chrollo isn’t not only playing requiem(battle sound) but also trying to lead Uvo’s soul to heaven. This is real requiem.

I liked the fact he didn't turn around. Made him look more badass. It showed why Chrollo was the leader. There is an emotional side to his character. The previous scenes really showed that i.e. when he was with the fortune teller girl. But not 'completely' validating his enemy....and showing how detached and impartial he could become while retaining some emotion....I really liked it. He talks to that scumbag but doesn't turn around. It rly shows emotion, ruthlessness, and leadership in his char.

I love the 2011's anime for the high quality of the animations, the storyboards and the fidelty to the source material. But the 1999 anime will always be superior in terms of art style, soundtrack and atmosphere in my opinion. Really wish we could one day see a new version that has the best of both worlds.

You didn't read the manga then if you think Hunter x Hunter 2011 is too faithful on its adaptation of the manga. The 2011 version really messed up the story about Kite. In 2011, Gon didn't know Kite's name nor recognize Kite until Kite told Gon. In the manga, Gon already met Kite in chapter 1 and knew his name and face. Kite already told Gon in chapter 1 about Ging and the hunter license so there's no way Gon would not recognize Kite in Chimera arc. The 2011 didn't even show Gon and Killua saving Konta's son. Konta is the bear, a friend of Gon. This happened in the manga. Only the 1999 version showed it. Besides, the 1999 version is actually true to the designs of the manga. The 2011 version change it so much. The 1999 version only added 5 eps fillers. It's not that much. Besides, the fillers in 1999 are good and it was Togashi who made them while helping with Studio Pierrot that time in 1999. I know because I was able to catch up watching the 1999 version in early 2000's and I've been following Hunter x Hunter since the prior to 2011. So, which really is a faithful, huh?

@@erenyeagerist7681 yeah in the 2011 version gon’s rage isn’t really…as impactful as it is in the manga. since he didn’t have any real connection to kite in the anime while the 1999 version and the manga both show how important kite was for gon, even if they didn’t really interact that much we still get the sense that he is important to gon and almost like a father figure…while the 2011 version just throws it out there which could’ve been executed better imo

Being faithful to the source material isn't necessarily a good thing. Mangakas aren't gods who can do it all. Some scenes can be shortened or extended to great effect. Like the coin tossing scene in the Zordek mansion that was over in minutes in 2011, but was several times longer in 99 and probably one of the more memorable episodes for me.

Feitan and Phinks Machi and Hisoka (Replaced by Kalluto) Franklin and Shizuku Pakunoda and Shalnark Kortopi and Bonolenov Nobunaga and Uvonogin Chrollo Lucifer

1999 is good but I like this 2011 version a lot more, not only because of the amazing Requiem (Riot) they played during the massacre for Uvo but also because of the voices, I enjoy the newer ones a lot more. Like what even is with Feitan here, his rusty voice in 2011 is so amazing, I was shocked to hear the 1999 version, as well as Chrollo who has such a dangerously soft voice in the new version in comparison to the old version. It looks darker in the 1999 version while the new version is more colourful and ironically lively while they're slaughtering the community. Well nonetheless both versions are great but I prefer the 2011 version. So why siding for one version and bashing the other? It's one series, one story and two adaptions. Appreciate both.

@@sarcasticintrovert1363 Found the 1999 fanboy, the fucking Riot music in the 2011 scene alone far outclasses the 1999. Not to mention the hilariously laughable sound effect that they used in the 1999 ver.

@@sarcasticintrovert1363 Judging by your previous statements, and how you're conveying them basically as flame, I've learnt that you probably watched the 1999 version first, and out of nostalgia and only nostalgia, you like it more. There's a reason why the 1999 version isn't as high up as the 2011 version on MAL, because it's just not as good.

Can’t believe i just watched this when i was a kid and just felt - wow cool, cant wait for the main battle. Now, to me it’s the peak of the arc, truely an art.

I will say this for the 90's version: They really captured the dark grittiness of the manga.

Others prefer the 2011 version of this, but I actually vote for this version. 2011’s music was undeniably beautiful and I liked the pacing, for me the way this version was executed was more noir, the darker atmosphere and coloring set the tone better than 2011, and the music in my opinion for the requiem was more fitting in 1999. It feels calm, almost like a sense of hope at the start but then the chanting and opera begins to shift, more emotions are portrayed where the hope vanished and the spiders are truly suffering a great loss, the 2011 ost just felt like one emotion (disaster) which makes sense but 1999 was more spread out.

i mean i don't even know why there is a debate. a story about mafias, thiefs and revenge for genocide has to be delivered in a dark atmosphere.

I agree with everything you said expect the song. Using Mozarts Requiem would’ve made this scene 10000x better, it just fits the dark and noir vibe it has.

@@estivate3683 I totally agree. Though I think the soundtrack in general of the york new city ark in 2011 was super good. The best would be the dark visual aesthetics of 1999 and the soundtrack of 2011 IMO

Damn, is there a chance these kind of animation style ever come back? I get that back then making panels are painstakingly tedious and the amount of paper they spend is unimaginable but what about technology that can replicate the same quality but more efficient.

Absolutely no chance unfortunately. Studios phased out of using cell animation in the mid 2000s, we haven’t seen an anime drawn on cell since. I don’t think there’s any studios that still even practice it as it was costly and time consuming, aswell as relatively unethical due to all the paper and paint usage. A lost art really, and i think other studios in the general industry like disney did similar. It sucks cause cell produced the best artwork :(

The 1999 anime was hampered by censorship standards of its time but went all out in the last couple of episodes as the studio really didn't have to give a damn. The indoor fish in this version is far more gruesome. Notice that when the fish disappeared, it left behind a huge chunk of blood & guts: that's actually the partially digested portion of the assassin that the fish had eaten. If only the 1999 version was remade today...

You actually see the guy's inside poured out in 1999 version though and generally speaking the censorship used to be alot more loose than today's anime in 90s.Look at the recent Jojo's adaptation for an example of it.

The 1999 version of uvo's requiem looks very dark and creepy, yet the 2011 version makes it look badass and terrifying at the same time....... I'll have to go with 2011 version, mostly because of the awesome ost that sounds while the gen ryodan goes crazy "Riot"

@iDarksanta A requiem is a piece of music to commemorate someone who died. The Spiders (Kuroro and company) just lost a comrade, who was killed by Kurapica. (I forget his name, big guy). Kuroro likens his careful planning and coordination with his team as a Maestro or conductor, and his allies as his instruments.

The music during the requiem scene... what is the name ? it's an OST only for the anime or it's a real song ? because it isn't "requiem aranea OST" .....

I love the art direction, colors, and mood it creates but I think in terms of pacing and structure 2011 version works better for me. Still love it and love the different interpretations. I still need to read it in the manga

I love the old version, it's the bersion I grew up with. It's darker than the 2011 one and I live for it. They toned down the newer one like when the heart killua snatched from the hunter test arch was covered in cloth but it was explicitly shown in the 1999 version. i bet if the old one went until the chimera arc, they'll be showing Pokkle's brain as pitou probed on it to learn about nen. However, I prefer the voice acting in the newer one. I cannot compare the animation and music since they are of different era; and both has their beauty; however, I like the darknes os the styling of the old one.
