The original version of this song is Italian. Yup! This song does not come from Japan, but comes from Italy and it is called "Volevo un gatto nero" performed in 1969 by a group of children in an old famous television program called "Lo zecchino d'oro". Funfact: The title "Volevo un gatto nero" means, in English, I wanted a black cat, but in a Japanese's cover the meaning is different because Kuroneko no tango, means the tango of the black cat.

Indeed, but the japanese version by Osamu is so...cute...I was 12 years old in 1969 and just discovered karate and with it a lot of interest on the japanese language; tha´ts when I heard the kuro-neko-no-tango for the first time...today I´m an old kuro-obi, btw...and we had neko-ashi-dashi (cat stance) etc. and all this fired my interest. Didn´t know the original is italian! Thanks!

That is correct. The Italian version of this song is called "Volevo Un Gatto", and was released at the Zecchino d'Oro festival of 1969. Unlike "Kuroneko No Tango" which refers to a flighty lover, "Volveto Un Gatto" is a song about a white cat who laments not being a black cat. Moving on, on another note, there is an even more popular version of this song than "Kuroneko No Tango" which is the song "Black Cat Nero" which was released by the South Korean band Turbo in 1995.

"Black Cat Nero" has the six beat "La La La La La La" from the original, which is repeated twice and followed by the eight beat "La La La La La La La... La LAH!" of "Kuroneko No Tango. The combination of the "La La La" lyrics from "Volveto No Gatto" and "Kuroneko No Tango", along with the "Nero Nero Nero" lyrics and rap segments of "Black Cat Nero" proved extremely popular and vaulted the both the song "Black Cat Nero" and the band Turbo to the top of South Korea's music charts. A feat Turbo replicated many times with original hits such as their debut song "My Childhood Dream", and the songs "Twist King", "Love Is", "Goodbye, Yesterday", "Forbidden Game", "Cyber Lover". In addition, they had a 1998 collaboration with Will Smith for a cover of the song "Just The Two of Us", in a promotion for his album "Big Willie Style".

It is because tango is not a Japanese word. Just like if you are saying an English name or place it is correct to have the English pronunciation. Though it is weird nonetheless.

Except that Tango is NOT an English word. In Spanish the phoneme “t” is almost identical to the Japanese pronunciation. The short “u” between the n and the g , as it is pronounced by the native Japanese speakers, is a different story...

I know that the original one is Italian but what is sung in Japanese has nothing to do with what is sung in Italian : each song's lyrics are completely different and there is nothing in common except a black cat ( I think that many Italian people don't know about this point). Plus Japanese version was emphasized much more on Tango music melody because the target clients were adults not children while Italian version was created for children from the beginning and doesn't have much tango taste. I add that Osamu Minagawa released not only Japanese version in USA and Holland etc.. but also 6 different languages versions like in Italian, English, French, German etc...abroad ( all the translated lyrics are based on his own Japanese version not on the original Italian version by Vincenza Pastrelli ) Anyway I love both Italian one by Vincenza Pastrelli and Japanese one by Osamu Minagawa and of course I respect Italian people's pride about the original version.
