Kung Fu vs Wing Chun

There are many styles of martial arts, some more popular than others. When it comes to where they all originate from, you will find that many of them are actually Kung Fu, but with slightly different techniques. Shaolin Kung Fu is probably China’s most famous martial art and Wing Chun comes a very close second, made famous by Bruce Lee and recently by Donnie Yen in the hit movie series “Ip Man”. Wing Chun and Shaolin are both Kung Fu styles, so what makes them special and distinct from each other? In this video, we are going to take a closer look at both the styles, and see just what the differences are.

Wing Chun is also a Kung Fu style. Let's be clear about that. All Kung Fu styles fall into two categories: Northern style and Southern style. Northern styles belong to the country where there is plenty of space to move around while Southern styles belong to the crowded cities of Southern China where one developed close range boxing. Northern styles are long range boxing. So Wing Chun falls into the category of Southern styles and therefore is a close range boxing style.

Kung Fu is not a system.. It is more of a glossary term which could be interpreted as the equivalent of the English term Art, or a skill to be mastered. For example, Calligraphy is also considered a Kung Fu. Wing Chun is a system and is a Kung Fu and also originated from the Shaolin temples, from the era where the Qing dynasty abdicated the Ming dynasty. The temples were loyal to the Ming family and were therefore declared enemies of the state in the Qing dynasty. The style was developed as an efficient and effective way to defend themselves without weapons. Against bigger, stronger and armed opponents, often in bigger numbers, as well (the Qing soldiers). The way Wing Chun is written in Chinese, and in particular the character for "Wing" in this case, is very similar to the character used for Ming from the Ming family dynast, showing their loyalty to the Ming family in naming the style they created to protect themselves from the soldiers of the Qing dynasty. P.S. Weapons were added later to the system so it could officially qualify as a martial art.

@@SchotteJ Thank you for the input, but please understand that not everyone agrees on the origins of Wing Chun, the translation of the name, or even how the martial arts are organized. It all depends on how one was taught and the self research done. Although Kung Fu (actually Gongfu) is not a direct reference to martial arts, but rather (as you say) a term to mean something one is good at doing, in martial arts organizational breakdown and terminology it is considered the system of Chinese martial that umbrellas styles such as Wing Chun, Hung Gar, Choy Li Fut, etc. , and is explained this way to new students to understand the layout of Eastern martial arts as a whole. Don’t get me wrong, your explanation reply is well thought and eloquently written, but beliefs and perceptions can still vary from practitioner to practitioner.

Big difference between movie fighting and street fighting. How many Wing Chun fighters have that devastating Superman power where every one of their punches or kicks can knock an opponent down? But you see that all the time in the movies. People still believe that Bruce Lee was a devastating fighter based on his movie fights. But when a reporter asked Muhammad Ali if he thought he could beat Bruce Lee then Ali responded, "Who has he ever fought?" I'm old enough to have been around when karate first came to America. I've even seen some of Bruce Lee's demonstrations like his one inch punch. If you watch with a critical eye, you can see that he is merely stepping into the punch and pushing the victim off balance. Since there was ALWAYS cooperation between "Master" and "Dummy" the dummy would over exaggerate the effect and go flying back into a chair. Funny how they ALWAYS managed to hit the chair. Such demonstrations were just THEATRICS, which Lee was a master at, to hype the Master's particular martial art or sell some books or a contract to join his gym (dojo). There were even "Masters" who claimed to knock out students without even touching them. He would wave his hands in their direction and they would obediently fall down. I'm still amazed at how stupid most people are to believe such BOOLSHEET.

muay thai is more brutal thus effective and when use it in fighting sports the brutal usually wins. in ancient times when war means life and death all fights going to be fast and violent i dont think the wing chun or karate or muay thai looks the same like what we see today. all going to be brutal and can kill each other almost as good. no ring, no rounds, no sportsmanship... just killing.

@Bhavesh Dhuri if u get better master.. doesn't matter its kungfu or muay thai... they can train you better. but good masters with ability in real fights are not many in kungfu. i think bcos kungfu is so much demonstration oriented these days. muay thai easily you can get bcos they make a living in the rings. fighting in ring is closer to real fights than demonstration.

@Bhavesh Dhuri just to add... real kungfu masters are not stupid. they are aware the devastating power of muay thai. muay thai way is very strong because they practice hard subjected to punishment. real kungfu masters also subjected themselves to punishment and they know what to expect when face with muay thai fighters. the hands and legs of the great people are so hard and tough. if u learn from great masters .. be prepared to go through extreme hardship. easy training wont prepare u well.

I'll say we this for the LAST time! There was NEVER, EVER, a Ng Mui or Wing Chun!! China has records that PROVE they never existed!! Wing Chun was developed by the five elders of the Shaolin temple, and includes these five systems: White eyebrow, White crane, an early form of Choy li fot, Hung gar, and Shaolin. They used the most effective and efficient techniques from these five systems, included the centerline/central line theory, and ten concepts that not only dictate proper response to any attack, but also takes out ALL flaws and stiffness found in ALL boxing derivative systems! This is why Traditional Wing Chun beats all other systems!! It is a complete system and made SPECIFICALLY for the streets!!

I would think you would do the oppostie, since they are playing the close game already, you would need to lure them out and get distance extended for a crucial attack. If you get too close, they can wreck you with holds and sharp jabs. You probably know, but, a big part of this style is not just blocking, but also pinning points in the arm.. moving around the assailant, and then striking with knuckles in sensetive areas. Pressure points and body control are huge and that is offense and defense.

Wing Chun Kuen all the way and for both questions. A truly superior martial art that's only getting recognition lately. You'd see some fighters at the first UFC's in the 90s but man they sucked...they didn't represent the best fighters, that's why it got put aside for a couple of decades and used only as movie novelty with Jackie Chan.

Kung fu means good work. The continuous training and constantly striving to hone ones skills in this system is the true meaning of kung fu. Five elements, five animals, yin and yang. The balance and bio rhythm of taking in energy and expenditure of it wen necessary. The ability to be explosive in uprooting or taking down opponents with minimal energy spent. In all wen and practiced in practical use and practiced traditionally, hung gar kung fu is the most difficult to learn but the most powerful in my opinion. The only weakness in this system is the practitioner

@@abneraguilar1176 precisely. Nothing specifically to do with martial arts, but borrowed as a concept from other classical practices. You can achieve kung fu in calligraphy or tea making. As to the elements, animals, ying/yang etc these are teaching aids largely relatively modern. Just like all the shaolin stuff, late add ons (borrowed foundation myths from tiandihui for new urban schools). Late C19th wuxia has a lot to answer for. And of course the desire to ape Western boxing in the same period has meant that many arts lost the fundamentals associated with weapon use, which were actually critical to those fighting arts historically. Still, it sells.
