Kung Fu Basics: Attacking a Closed Gate

Спорт

It's always been a "pet peeve' of mine: A teacher is covering his center and the student is doing everything he can to attack where it's easy for the teacher to respond. For peets sake, that's what "high and low" was created for....to mix it up.
In this video I discuss about my frustration in seeing this...
Also, I give a few examples of how to address it. Naturally I lean a little more towards my Hung Gar side...but of course, it could be addressed in TONS of ways.

Sifu, do you have the name of the pattern utilizing the forearm strike? Is “forearm strike” a direct translation of the name of the technique? Is it considered a variation of delivery on the chopping fist? Please and thank you, great stuff always

Hi Randolph... "Forearm Strike" is technically the proper name. But if you want some further explanation, I'll fill you in: When we are using this particular forearm strike...it can be made with either the fist closed or open knife-hand = but the power that we use is common in old school Chinese martial arts. The arm is bent and the forearm is roughly 45 degrees. We strike with the "Ulnar" bone (pinky side) ...it is done as if sawing a log. The chest is hollowed and the shoulder sends the energy all the way through the forearm to the fist. Other triva: It uses a concept that my sifu taught, "The Goose Head, bottom of the elbow concept" In Cantonese the term "goose" , as opposed to other long necked birds is used because it is more common and rolls of the tongue better, but any long necked bird (such as crane) could work. Overall the arm shape resembles the head (the hand) and the neck (the forearm) of a goose. I.e. the shape of the arm withe the elbow bending down slightly and the wrist bending up. Such as seen in many Ha Say Fu Hung Style poses. Hope this helps, :)

I've been studying Chinese martial arts now for damn near 4 decades & the scientific knowledge that went into various kung Fu styles is incredible. A person who truly understands what is being presented & has practical experience is a truly formidable opponent. I'm a Wing Chun practitioner & it's highly misunderstood & misapplied constantly & is extremely effective if the person really knows what they're doing. Same thing with Hung Ga. I respect all real Kung Fu, it's just too bad you don't see more of it.

I always appreciate the realness and practicality of your videos. It is a breath of fresh air in a very polluted martial arts world.

What your doing is trapping hands. This is good for all styles to know how to walk the bridge of the opponent. Skilfully of course. Great video.

If the opponent is busy occupying the upper gate, can't you just kick him? Jab, cross, low kick.

Simon2k17 If you're talking about how to respond to being repeatedly attacked in a closed gate?Sure...why not, but my point is not so much about defending...it's more of a warning about what not to. IMO...i.e..

Hi, I don't think that's he's point. He's saying that when the guy is occupying the center line with his hand, you don't need to remove it, you can kick his leg or blow an angled or circular punch.

Cesar Crash Ok...yeah...totally doable if done correctly. No arguments from me as it doesn't detract from my main sentiment.
