Kulning - Ancient herdingcall - A farewell song to the cows

The singing technique called "kulning" is an ancient Swedish herdingcall, that was used by women long time ago to call home the cattle (the cows and the goats) back home to the farm in the evenings. It was also used as a form of communication, since the high pitch sounds can be heard through very far distances.
I sang for the cows one last time before they had to go back to the farm for the winter. I always feel a sorrow when they leave the village in the autumn. Since May they have been here on the fields, bringing some life to our little quiet village with only 10 inhabitants in the middle of the northern woods.
The sounds of cowbells in the quiet evening is one of the best sounds I know. And I love the feelings of seeing them running towards me as i sing. Especially when I see my favorite cow, Stjärna (star). She is always the first one coming.
I already miss them so much.

In Norwegian culture, one of the " magical creatures" that inspired this kind of enchanting singing was called Huldra. I once was at a crafting camp as a kid (smithing etc) at an old farm in the middle of nowhere in north of Sweden. One morning I woke up early 4 or 5 in the morning, and I heard a strange melody coming from outside. So I went to the window and looked out at this small field surrounded by the forest and covered in mist. I saw this woman who sang this type of melody (kulning) She walked across the field barely visible in the fog, then she disappeared into the forest on the other side of the field. It was a surreal moment that has stayed with me, also I remember how cold my bare feet were against the wooden floor. It was both frightening and enchanting at the same time.

Guys would come flying in and ask where they could find the music "My wife loves it. I don't care how much it costs". The flowers kept blooming like never before. Won 1st prize in R.I. For the best garden center that year. True story!

I cried. I’m learning this technique also. The farmer who lives by me has allowed me to practice with his herd of cows whenever I would like, although I don’t do it unnecessarily. It was an incredible moment when they first came to me, and I heard my voice echoing through the emptiness. I love to pet and stroke the cows who get to me first while waiting for the others to get to me. I am not Scandinavian, I live in the uk countryside but this technique has intrigued me for so long. I feel such a deep connection with the animals. Sometimes my cats also come running, and I gently stroke them and say “I love you, but I wasn’t calling for you” ☺️

The only reason the cows react to her voice is because they are familiar with her.I know you won't understand this, but until pretty recently cows were treated with this kind of respect and, at some clusters of traditional herders, are still treated like that. Cancelling all the farms with cows is cancelling the culture of respectfully exploding a resource. The life of the herders is tied to their animals. If the cows grow old and start to get sick and don't produce enough milk, they need to sacrifice them (both for mercy and for practicality): if there are too many old cows in the fields, there won't be food for more young cows, the balance will break, ALL the cows will die as well as the herders.

And when me and my sisters used to play out in the fields the lady would stand up at the top of the hill singing almost just like this usually she only did it when dinner or food was cooked or when she needed us for something

It wasnt until i found Jonnas videos that i learned about kulning. Then it made more sense. :D

It sounds like the note starts off as a mix or something that involves chest voice but then for the duration of it is a very powerful head voice tone. But somehow more powerful than most head voices I’ve ever heard. As if it’s still somewhere in between your mixed voice and head voice to give it that extra power. It goes to show you that some registers cannot be categorized, you just do something with your voice that works and you’re glad that it’s free and clear and strong. It also sounds super bright so you need a lot of twang I would assume in the back of your tongue to get that to work and stand out in the vast field. It’s such a well supported sound.

Mellifex Maybe in the past but imo it is another religion nowadays destroying European cultures everywhere. The blow things and people up en masse, along with themselves. Two guesses what I am talking about. They are extremely demanding. They come here to then demand that their religion will be put above our secularity. They scream in the name of Allah and kill in his name. Of course, not all. But the extreme ones are extreme enough to die for their cause. It is them who we should worry about now.
