He is Pakistani and this is Pakistani music. This is not Hindu music because this is not praise for statues.

I would only say music is for everyone.. naa tumhara naa mera.. Music sabka hai.. classical sabka hai.. Everything you receive is from above.. God is everyone's God..

Our cultural history is the same, especially connecting music.

He could have simply said we are so blessed with a musical tradition that has come from many inspired beings whether from Pakistan, India or Timbuktu ! The rest was great.

Don't be confused what Rustam Khan sb just said. Main point of his comments are the classical music is common heritage of sub continent from Last 5000 years. The Main Raags and modern classical music started from Amir Khusroo. Never consider that this classical music only belongs to neighbour country but it is our heritage as well. Nice upload

Let me clear your mind Rustam ji... Raaga itself is sanskrit word and it was practically in India since the time immemorial.. Raaga was actually used to worship the Lord... All muslim fakirs and aulliyas came to India pretty late and they saw that music is inherent in India then they started singing so that they can connect to the masses. One more thing the great tansen was a hindu brahmin later he was converted to islam on the insistense of Akbar . most of the so called Ustads hv brahmin

In Classical Music there are different version of Music Including, Khayal, Thumri, Dadra,etc. Classical / Shastria musician is either Composer / Music Director who has knowledge of Gharana/raag/compositions /Bandish etc and the other is Singer who is blessed with Beautiful Voice and Polished with Practice / Riyaz. Rustam has Knowledge and understanding of Family heritage & Music but it is not necessary That he must be a very good performing singer.

Pig is always pig because of its piggish behaviour, not because of its colour and shape. The more we want to be smaller , the greater we become. We have to transend the boundary of race, caste and culture.

I wish Rustam could understand that music is not bounded to any region, religion or country. Despite of he being master in classical music his knowledge on music is not more than an ordinary person whose thoughts are not beyond region, religion or country. Grow up buddy, your father was a greatest artist and he was admired across the globe. You need to learn from him, he never said anything such in public.

Rustam was a promising vocalist 27 years ago. He wasted himself. Gave up riaz, became ghar damad of a rich man and lost all his music and talent.

It is very suprising to hear Rustam's claim over the classical music. I am great fan of ustad Fateh Ali Khan, late Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, late Ustad Asad Amanat Ali Khan, late Ustad Nusrat fateh Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shafkat Amanat Ali khan..none of the great singers claimed proprietory claims over the classical music. You can be an international star but with comments like this you are restricting yourshelf.

u showed how much you know aout music or cuture in general by bringing in hindu vs muslim into this. i understood your mentality and only feel pity for u. listen to your great ustads and fell happy.

He's not talking about Pakistan, he's talking about the Islamic civilization in the Indian subcontinent . And he's not entirely wrong. This music may have *began* in pre-Islamic times but it was certainly not what it is today, probably just folk music and bhajans. It was the mughals who for 1000 years kept musicians at their courts and promoted *all* forms of art. All styles of classical music were refined by the mughals over the centuries. If they can invent, innovate, or introduce the majority of instruments used (santoor, sitar, tabla, sarod) they can surely create raags and taals. Claims to classical music are not new. First off, it's the Hindus who stole the very word "India" (it applies to the whole region) therefore everything "Indian" belongs to them, then the Bengalis who think they invented all the raags, and South Indians who think all of humanity began from them. I believe every community made their contributions, naturally. But how is classical music more-or-less standardized in the vast subcontinent? The only thing that can explain it is that the music was perfected by the mughal musicians, and the Sufis who traveled within the region brought it to others, (these being indisputable facts). Still, I do not believe that Ustad is claiming music for his country or religion, and neither am I. What is really happening is that he's speaking to a bunch of Westernised hipsters who know nothing about themselves, and perhaps a little drama is necessary to get them to care. And being one of the last few traditional singers in the region he may be under pressure to preserve it. It makes sense if you put it in context.

Khan sahib I admire your singing.....but I would like to share some thought with you......let not man divide what God ordained as one....our Music is our common heritage....it's neither Indian nor is it Pakistani....all contributed to make it whole.....wether it was Persians, muslims, Sufi saints or Hindu ashes like Bharat muni etc...it's their worship of sound that is OUR music today.....Harare raaga ke hain, talen ke hain....skyways at yahanna layen Hamas sangeet hi hamen jorta hai....let u

I am astonished that people are trying to teach Rustam sab who is son of great gharana . or janab shankyxyz sab hamein koi zarorat ni ha ap k panditon sy learn krny ki we have great ustads and gharanas like payala , sham churasi and many more rather apko zarorat ha kyon k koi hindu khayal gaiki sahi ni gaa sakta wo sirf dhurpad gaa sakty hen ...khayal gana sir muslims hi ka kaam ha...

No wonder shastriya sangeet is a dying art. What a horrible presentation of this amazingly beautiful bandish. To clear the air, I am from Pakistan, but this goes beyond proprietary claims over the art form. This has none of the dignity or composure that a performance of Darbari demands. For comparison, listen to Pandit Pran Nath's Darbari, available on youtube. I'm sorry Rustam jee, this doesn't do justice to your illustrious gharana.
