Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a song from the Sephardi music repertoire; the Jewish community that was expelled from Iberia at the end of the Reconquista, and settled around the Mediterranean, developping diverse regional styles based on where they settled. This specific song is from Tangiers, Morocco, and was written by an anonymous author in 1890. Different songs using this text, or similar ones detailing the birth of Abraham have existed during the centuries, but this one in Maqam Hijaz is the most well known one. My arrangement pays homage to the Moroccan-Spanish background of the song by mixing a Moroccan string section, percussions and oud with a Spanish guitar chord progression similar to Flamenco’s. Lyrics in Ladino: Kuando el rei Nimrod al kampo salia mirava en el sielo i en la estreyeria vido una lus santa en la juderia Ke avia de naser Avraham Avinu. Chorus: Avraham Avinu, Padre kerido Padre bendicho, lus de Israel. Luego a las komadres enkomendava Ke toda mujer ke prenyada kedara si paria un ijo, al punto la matara Ke avia de naser Avraham Avinu. La mujer de Terah kedo prenyada i de dia en dia el le preguntava (or demandava) "¿De ke teneix la kara tan demudada?" Eya ya savia el bien ke tenia. En fin de mueve mezes parir keria iva caminando por kampos i vinyas, a su marido tal ni le descubria topo una meara, ayi lo pariria En akella ora el nasido avlava: "Anda vos, la mi madre, de la meara, yo ya topo kien m'alechara, Malah de sielo me acompanyara. Grande zekhut tiene el senyor Avraham, que por él conocemos el Dío de la verdad. Grande zekhut tiene el senyor parido, que afirma la mitsvá de Avraham Avinu. English translation: When King Nimrod went out to the countryside He was looking at heaven and at the stars He saw a holy light in the Jewish quarter [A sign] that Abraham, our father, was about to be born. Chorus: Abraham our Father, beloved father, Blessed father, light of Israel. Then he told the midwives That every woman who was still pregnant If she gave birth to a male child at once he will be killed because Abraham our father was about to be born. Terach's wife was pregnant and each day he would ask her "Why do you look so pale?" She already knew the blessing that she had. At the end of nine months she wanted to give birth, She walked through fields and vineyards She didn't tell her husband anything, She found a cave; there, she would give birth. At that time the newborn spoke: "Walk away from the cave, my mother I have already found someone who will take me away. An angel from heaven will accompany me Because I am a child of the blessed God." After twenty days she went to visit him. She saw in front of her a young man leaping, Looking at the sky and (looking carefully/noticing everything), In order to know the God of Truth. Great merit has honorable Abraham Because of him we recognize the true God. Great merit has the father of the newborn Who fulfills the commandment of Abraham our father.

Buenos días, Farya. I noticed a thing about your singing voice that mostly seems to happen in your spanish songs. In most of the other languages your voice seems more tight anc clean, but in spanish you seem to be more raspy and like you expell more air. Although I may be imagining things. I think It maybe that you usually add a bit of nasality in the vocals (wich makes It sound more tight, like you add twang), but in some of the sephardic/spanish songs sometimes (I think) you don't do it. Anyway, great job, I love your work ❤

Some of us never left and managed to survive in the remote interior of Portugal, unfortunately, ladino had to be dropped (and forgotten) to survive.

@@faryafaraji Please, look into Syriac Language and it's Music in Assyrian Empire of past. I am a Syro-malabar Catholic 🇻🇦 from India🇮🇳. Our Liturgy is East Syriac. I am very much delighted to know people are there and here, interested in old Languages and music of that era.😁🙏🏼 All the Best! 👍🏼

As a native Spanish speaker, it is interesting to note the similarity between Ladino and Spanish. I understood most of the song, barring some words that read like they are from Hebrew. Thank you for making this, I have always been fascinated by the evolution of languages.

I agree. It is incredibly close to Spanish. The biggest difference seems to be that the spelling was standardized differently.

That's so interesting. It's the same with German and Yiddish. I have no Jewish ancestry as far as I know but I remember my Grandma using words that I only later learned were mostly associated with Yiddish. Meschugge for example.

@@rhel373 Yes, I get what you mean. To me it was very surprising while learning English to see the influence of French in modern English and how it shaped its evolution. In my case it is interesting to see that, while Ladino uses a very archaic form of Spanish for a lot of its words, it is still mostly understandable by modern Spanish standards, although the Hebrew influence in it is very notable, even though it is still different enough to be considered a language of its own.

When you say Spanish you mean Castilian. Ladino is as close to Castilian as Catalan is.

Sadly, Ladino is not that common anymore. Hopefully we can continue to keep this language alive. I saw books in Ladino and they look very cool, and I only know one person who can speak Ladino.

@@aas11476ng Yes, I find Roman-Jewish but especially Turkish-Jewish history to be very fascinating. Turkish Jews have enriched our society with their culture and language. I'm just really saddened that many of them made their Aliyah to Israel. Oh and btw thanks for the advice for where I can learn Ladino.

No creo que esto sea ladino puro como se hablaba hasta las órdenes de expulsión 1609-1614, parece bien más castellano andaluz. Hay que tener en cuenta que se escribió en 1890 y que por estas fechas el contacto de Tanger con la península era bastante regular. Sin embargo, esta música nos puede dar una idea de como sería la música en los tiempos de la Hispania musulmana.

@zivifergann1808 As Moroccan Berber , Since I discovered through DNA test that I am 4% Ashkenazi! ( why not shephard?I don't know how!) 10% Iberian , 80% North African. I became interested in learning more about the my 4% Jewish music.

You truly bring this song alive. I first learned it in Istanbul where Ladino songs are quite popular still among Jews, even though the spoken language is fading away.

@@adaywithsmator Yeah, but it's mostly Liturgical Music in Oriental style though some language of Syriac Language pronunciation is quite different from Assyrian Catholic church Liturgical music. We both have same, Liturgical prayers and songs as there's big Influence of the Chaldean Church of East and Antiochean Catholic church in the South India, before the Arrival of Portuguese an Latin Catholic Traditions of West. 😃 It's actually very cool, to be celebrating Catholics traditions. 🤩 Traditions in whole world.

Well done Farya! I am Greek and I speak Spanish. I knew for the language of lantino. Also I travelled to Morroco with my wife so the music of the song rings me a bell. It worths to say that after the reconquista many of the Jewish found their new home to Thessaloniki (Greece) until the second World War. Quite a beautiful song. My Sephardic ancestry is from Mexico and Puerto Rico, which has quite a large Sephardic population after the Reconquista. Mexico had its own Inquisition as well unfortunately. I have Moroccan ancestry as well but have little information past 4 generations back, the records are not easy to access. Learning Ladino to keep it alive 🙌🏽 💝

It's sad to see that the Ladino culture and language are unheard of much and that it's not really around anymore. It was a blend of Ibero-Romance and Hebrew languages, along with a mix of cultural aspects that really added alot to the diverse range of peoples in Iberia at the time during the medieval ages. I'm currently learning Spanish and this is a really cool experience to listen to this type of culture and music.

The place with the most surviving Ladino culture, and, Ladino influence, is Israel. Present Israeli Hebrew culture has absorbed the Sefaradi-Ladino heritage as one of its important constituent components.

I knew this song !!! I first listened to it through the Annwn.

I was fortunate in college to take a class on Sephardic history. Taught by a member of Sephardim, no less. It was a real privilege.

Don't know if someone has mentioned this yet, but the song is based on a part from the Book of Yasher (Jasher), where it says that Avram (before being called Avraham), was born during Nimrod's time. The story of his youth and marriage to Sarah are there as well.

Yup, Regardless of the opinion of authenticity, the book of Yasher is an amazing read. There is also another jewish text called the apocalypse of Abraham it differs slightly but provides similar accounts of the story of Abraham with Nimrod. reading the sons of Jacob leaping over walls and conquering the 7 amorite cities by themselves is always so fun to me, its very absurd the detail is goes into, It feel like something straight out of an anime fight scene. we don't have this account in Genesis but we do have a mention of these battles in the book of Jubilees and the testament of Judah, There are a bunch of other sources from midrashes To Josephus which mentioned of events that are recorded in this book.
