KTM 950 & 990 review and common problems︱Cross Training Adventure

Спорт

crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com The KTM 950SE and it's close cousin the 950 Adventure! Is it just an obese pumpkin, or one of the most versatile big adventure bikes ever made? I have occasionally ridden with guys who own these beasts and always been surprised when they start riding them like dirt bikes. A mate of mine owns one and occasionally drags it out of storage, yesterday we popped out for a quick run and I got to ride the 950 again for the first time in years... First, a bit of history about this big adventure bike. The story of KTM 950 Adventure started in 1992. Two engineering students combined a pair of cylinders from a KTM LC4 single on a special crankcase, and it was displayed at a motorbike show. In 1998, KTM decided to go with a v-twin design and an emphasis on light weight and compact build. The result? the new LC8 engine and production began in 2003. 196kg dry weight, and around 102 horsepower. Later it become the fuel injected KTM 990 Adventure. Many say the KTM 950SE like riding a big dirt bike. And I can see why. 21 inch front wheel. Lots of suspension travel. And relatively light weight for the engine size. Years ago I used to lead rides with my DR650 and I clearly remember being followed by guys on KTM 950s. I would up the pace a bit. They were still there. I'd increase the pace again. They were still on my tail. Seems everyone I know has a KTM 950 or 990, so an overview of the big pumpkins made sense. The Italian company however refused to share it with their Austrian neighbours. Another alternative for KTM was the Swedish Folan 60-degree V-twin motor which already existed, however it was also aborted once KTM had been successfully floated on the stock market. A few times I pushed as hard as I could safely and there was one guy who was always right there behind me, no matter how rough the forest trail became. An experienced rider can really boot these big pumpkins along at good speed. And of course it's always 80% the rider, 20% the bike. So what is it like to ride a KTM 950 Adventure after the DR650? A constant theme you will hear from owners is you notice the weight at a standstill but the moment you are moving you don't notice it anymore. I can see what they mean, but I don't completely agree. The KTM is around 50kg heavier than my DR650 and I was always conscious of that extra weight. But yes, once you are moving it is surprising how you don't worry about it. The long travel suspension soaks up the bumps and jumps. It's easy to see why the KTM 950 Adventure bit quite a bit into BMW's share of the adventure bike market. Known issues with the KTM 950SE? Not a lot. The basic engine design was rock solid. There were some issues with clutch slave cylinder failures, water pump seals, and faulty radiator caps. The emissions equipment caused the usual types of problems so the majority of owners just ditched it. That was just a teaser, though - as was the second time around in 1996, when it was revealed that the Stuttgart-based design office Kraft Technik, had been commissioned by KTM to produce a design for a V-twin Hard Enduro, possibly using the 60-degree V-twin RSV900 Rotax engine at that time developing for Aprilia. Regular viewers will know in recent vids I've been discussing whether the big adventure bikes are getting a bit too heavy for many riders. What about the KTM 990 Adventure? Of course if you mainly do highways and some easy dirt roads then weight isn't very important. And a heavy bike is usually more stable if you have a passenger. But for the solo rider who wants to occasionally get into the rougher stuff, then weight does become an issue. And I know plenty of guys getting into adventure riding for the first time, or after a long break, and they bought the biggest adventure bike possible then rapidly realised it was too heavy. The story of KTM 950 Adventure started in 1992. That year, a one-off special called the Bepono, built for the German BoTT series by two engineering students by combining a pair of cylinders from a KTM LC4 single on a special crankcase, was displayed on the KTM stand at the IFMA Show in Cologne.
Would a secondhand big adventure bike like the KTM 950 or KTM 990 Adventure suit you? It's hard to say, but at least it's a lot lighter than many of the other options, and still has the grunt to punt along at highways speeds all day. My gut feeling is if you are new to adventure riding it's best to get a smaller bike at first and work up to the beasts. For everyone else? This KTM 950 Adventure, or its close cousin the 990, are well worth looking at if you want a very versatile adventure bike.

The bike mostly seen on the video is a 950 Super Enduro. Structurally quite much the same bike but then again very different. Really, really nimble for it's size. One big benefit on the 950 motors is the clutch and fueling. It is ingredibly easy to control the power. It roosts endlesly if you want it to but if you don't want it to, the grip is easy to maintain even in really tight spots. If you happen to be utterly bored, my channel might offer a couple of laughs about the results of owning a 950SE and watching too many of your videos. I for example have learned that they don't make new plastics for it anymore.

I rode a 07 KTM 950 Super Enduro for 10+ years. Great bike and very reliable. I sold the bike and now someone else is enjoying the 950SE. As long as you stayed on two track trails or fire roads the bike was fine anything more technical than that you knew you were riding a 480 lbs. bike. Before you take any adventure bike off-road, be sure that you can physically pick the bike off the ground.

@@crosstrainingadventure, I didn't grow up with dirt bikes as a kid. As an adult, I learned on and rode sport and sport-touring bikes for 30+ years. Then I purchased a 2015 KTM 1290 Super Adventure. Wow! I loved it, and wished I had found ADV bikes sooner. I started venturing off the pavement - with no training. Still, I managed to have fun. I totaled it in a field, going too fast and losing control. I then bought a 2018 BMW R1200GS Adventure. I loved that bike as well! But I ended up running into a tree at 20 mph, missing all the crash bars and stoving in the beak and headlight assembly. I thought would be an easy fix, but my dealer & insurance adjuster totaled the bike - saying they were afraid that the main frame may have gotten tweaked by the impact. Grrr. I've spent the last year and a half on a 2012 Yamaha WR250R, and absolutely loving it! I've ridden two Backcountry Discovery Routes, and part of another one. I've been doing a lot of offroad riding and wild camping/boondocking, and loving it! I do miss having a big ADV bike, though, and will likely pick up an 890 Adventure or the new 2022 1290 Super Adventure in the next few months....

After several years on gravel, I still hang on to my DRZ400... For general purpose activities (commuting, short track and misc other recreational riding) my 990 SMR fits the bill. The 950SE still looms at the horizon though for me, maybe it's better as an idea rather than actually owning one?

Had an Erzberg 950SE from Canada that I imported to the US, farkled it to the nines then sold it to someone who has more skill than I. Keeping my 990A and adventurized 500EXCF, thinking of something even smaller and lighter as I get older. The SE is a certified beast, phenomenal for high speed dirt transitions but more difficult on single track than the 990A, just a different balance and steering feel. The SE carby feel is silky smooth compared to the 990A EFI and one of the many aspects that I miss the most. The fuel suckage though is difficult to modulate as the bigger tank (safari) changes the balance and flickability. Good memories of the SE though, glad I had the chance to experience it. Thanks for this trip down memory lane Barry.

Bought my 2007 990Adv in 2010 with about 10,000km on it. Things that have gone wrong with the bike: (1) In 2011, my horn fell off (the nut came loose) outside a cafe near Fez after weeks of stony tracks, causing mild embarrassment as it clattered to the ground. (2) In 2019 the clutch slave cylinder finally died 10 minutes from home, 8 years after some other 990 riders I met in Morocco told me it would. (3) Right tank fuel tap is now leaking mildly, I'm going to put another one on soon.

I think you touched on a key theme here mate, the big ADV are not dirt bikes and don't pretend to be. They are all rounders that can do most things OK, some things very well, and some things not so well. I see alot of channels now comparing/denigrating the big bikes as ADV failures, but they are doing that from a dirt bike/hardcore point of view. If I was buying a bike with serious single track in mind, I would not have bought a 1290, I bought a 1290 for outback touring, 2 up travel with luggage, and highway comfort - believe it or not, when compared to the VFR 1200 it replaced, it is a way better road touring bike. That said I love testing mine, and the bikes limits, I live at the foot of the Victorian high country, so of course I take it bush, but in doing so, I have great awareness for the size of the bike and serious stuff up potential LOL Great vid, I enjoy your channel and content.

There's definitely a place for the big bikes. As you say, for outback touring, 2 up travel with luggage, and highway comfort they are brilliant. I guess my concern is that you look at the marketing for Harley Davidson's latest bruiser and they get pro level riders doing jumps and hard core riding... I'm always worried newcomers to adv riding will think they will manage the big bikes well in gnarly conditions, and of course they will probably just wind up in hospital! I know what you mean about finding the 1290 better than the VFR for road, I much prefer the upright feel and ergos of an adventure bike compared to road bikes and enjoy tossing the DR650 around our twisty mountain roads... probably more than all the road bikes I've owned!

I started my dual-sport rides with my 990 Adventure. I love it but it's difficult to make progress if you start on such a bike. After just a month with a DJEBEL 200 (basically a DR 200) I got the courage to try more stuff with my 990, so the next step was to buy a '96 DR 650 SE ( this channel sealed this bike choice ) which is my to go bike for the more serious off-road trips (still dual-sporting realm). However, for easy trails, 990 causes a bigger grin on your face. There's something fun in taking this big bike on remote places.

It can be fun sometimes to try and make my big 990R do things it shouldn't do. Plus the other side is because they can be a handful, even twin track that can be boring on the dirtbike can become a fun challenge on the behemoth. You don't need to find the gnarliest terrain to have fun. And when the sun goes down they carry luggage so easily and less affected by luggage weight, wind and pillions than smaller bikes. The extended tarmac transport stages are so comfortable. Old mans bike 😉. A member of the stable for me, not a do it all bike though.

I am tall, and big build (aka put on a few extra kgs I don't need) however not sure how I will go picking up a bigger bike in the whoops, but based on many years of practice I am still confident that I can pick up the 640 when knackered (but still wish I had used my little XR400R fr the ride).

Just yesterday I got to test the T700 and 890R in between riding my own SE. Third/fourth gear maintenace roads with big holes and rocks, some rocky singletrack. I was a bit disapointted with the Yammie. It is a lot cheaper than the 890R, which is the first bike ever I could consider replacing my SE when I get old. The 890R still has more band for a buck. In my oponion, in active riding. I rode after a friend of mine who kept a quite steady pace. Following him on my SE was relaxed, with the Yammie I had to start working a bit to keep up and with the 890R I wanted to pass him.
