KTM 690 5 Essential DIY Maintenance Items

So a bit of an update on the 690 build and I detail the 5 items of maintenance I do on a second hand bike when I buy it including the 690 and also when I service a bike.

Good summary! If you're really worried about the air filter then run an OEM paper filter. foam/oil filters flow better but need meticulous maintenance to maintain even their mediocre filtering efficiency. Paper filters filter much better when new and even better as they age (relative to foam/oil)... and instead of letting motor damaging particles to your motor when they're at end of life they just stop flowing and cost you power. I'd really like that supplemental fuel tank but with the distances that I ride my 701 (set up for dirt focused ADV touring) I'm not willing to go to a foam filter to do it.

When cleaning the chain use kerosene and the brush with some cloths or cardboard underneath to catch the drips. You’ll be amazed by the amount of crud you get off the chain. Dry it with a clean rag. It’s much cheaper that way and your chain will be much cleaner. I use 90w transmission oil applied with a paint brush to oil and wipe off the excess with a clean rag.

Hey thanks for sharing your maintenance ideas. I’m a newbie to motorbike maintenance, how do I check the wheel and head stem bearings? It would be good to see in a future vid

Hi Getgowin yeah probably should have detailed that. It is simply a case of looking for movement.Put the bike on a stand and pull the forks forward and back to see if you can detect any movement in the head stem or front wheel bearings. Likewise for the rear check the rear swing arm and wheel bearing by trying to get side to side movement Regards Steve

G'day the tower and screen are from Rade Garage. Most countries have resellers in Australia it is Adventure Bike Components who are really good. You can also buy direct from the manufacturer in Europe. Great plug and play products Thanks for Watching Regards Steve
