KT Tape: Shin Splints- Anterior

CHECK OUT THE NEW VERSION: bit.ly/y49uQ8
The shin is the common name for the front of the lower leg bone (tibia) and its associated muscles and tendons. Muscles on the front of the leg (primarily the anterior tibialis) serve to point the toes and foot upwards (dorsiflexion). First, let's make a distinction between anterior shin splints and posterior shin splints. Anterior shin splints exist on the front of the leg. Posterior shin splints present pain along the inside edge of the lower leg.
Anterior shin splints can be identified by pain when the foot is bent upwards. They are typically brought on by new activity such as running, court sports, or other sports that require frequent stopping and starting. The problem is most common when these activities are performed on hard surfaces. Poor shoes, running downhill or on the balls of the feet, or overactive calves (muscle imbalance) can greatly increase the chances of developing anterior shin splints. Many times the shin splints arise from pain in the muscle due to overuse, but often the pain can be due to stress fractures in the bone. This is often seen in those who "tough it out" and continue the painful activity without allowing for sufficient recovery.
Treatment always entails rest and avoiding the activity that caused the pain. Shin splints start out as a minor annoyance, but can become debilitating if not allowed to heal in the early stages. Ice and anti-inflammatories will help reduce the pain and inflammation, but should not be used to continue the painful activity. Correcting poor running form, fitting for appropriate shoes, and stretching before and after activity will aid prevention.
KT Tape provides an excellent means of helping the muscles to relax and facilitate the healing process, as well as helping to reduce inflammation. As with any overuse injury, use the tape in conjunction with rest to promote the healing process and see reduced recovery times.

I’d never used KT Tape before and ran a half marathon today (Houston Half & 10k; 10/27/19). I used this video and used compression sleeves over them for my calves and I had absolutely no pain which is off because I did before during smaller mileage training. I was skeptical on KT Tape but will use it and these videos again.

We found that most people weren't using it and when the tape is split it has more edges which can effect the adhesion. So we re-shot all of our videos with out using the y-strip. They'll be the videos on our website. They're on KZread as well, each of the older videos has a link to the newer version. But, if you like the y-strip you can still cut it with scissors and apply using the older techniques.

@ChinitaPhuongVyDinh Thx for the question. To answer your question- no it shouldn't fall off after 10 minutes. There are many ways to tape each injury- we usually recommend that you try different options until you find the one that works best for you. For tips on keep the tape on go to our website and search on “8 Tips for Excellent Adhesion” in the top right corner search field (sorry there’s no link- KZread doesn’t allow linking). Let us know if we can do anything else to help. thx

@clonla1977 We appreciate the correction. Most people, especially consumers, refer to shin splints in general terms including issues with the anterior tibialis, so we've adopted the term.

If you are interested email us at marketing at kttape dot com and we'll discuss further. thx!

I am not on a high horse and I actually got a very good response from kt on this matter. And if you are using shin splints as a catch term for all leg pain I would hate to get treated by you. And no it can't be broken into posterior and anterior cause you don't have s shin on the back of your lower leg. it can be differentiated by medial and lateral.

WHY are there so many different ways/methods of applying the tape for MTSS,(tibialis anterior),REALLY i have seen like 10 different ways.My injury(21 years)on Tibialis Anterior is so bad, after like 5 minutes standing its already TO MUCH.I have baught these tape some time ago,but stopt using it because i got Crazy with all the detail of how to apply it(different ways you see on internet).1 thing they all have in common,is that they all go from bottom to top(foot to knee),i think i should just try different methodes, and see which 1 works/helps.........but if i see a video of some1 taping from top to bottom(knee-to-foot)i Kill Myself.............AAAAAAAAAGGGHRRRRRRR,some do 1 tape, some do 2,some do little stretch,so do much or no strech,so do with foot,or ankle etcccc.

Ive tried this product after reading about it and thank you for the videos. I have bad shin splints that even knot and are visible on the outside anterior of my shin espically after running. This product has greatly reduced pain and increased my run times though i still do have pain in the area. This is the only thing ive tried for my shins that has actually worked

The main reason was to increase ease of use and adhesion. Some clinicians still prefer to cut the Pro into a Y strip.

Shin split sufferers you need nose breathing- antioxidant supplements (quercetin, pycnogenol, astaxanthin etc.), vitamin D, increase nitric oxide levels (drink beetroot juice and take l-arginine, l-citrulline supplements) and at least 2,5lt water a day and maybe wear compression socks. This problem is un oxygenated muscle problem... and than do your stretch workouts. I am not a doctor just a sufferer like you, so before doing any of these ask your doctor if it is ok for you.

I went to my trainer and he said I had a inflamed periosteum. I let it rest for a year and come back to track this year ( my senior year) and its back. It doesn't hurt as bad as last year but I think if I keep going It will end out even worse. Can you please give me some ideas how to fix this bcus it hurts like hell and I'm trying to run for a scholarship.please reply I've been looking for a answer for a looong time.

Thank you for answering so promptly. I appreciate it :) Is using the I strips vs the Y strips more beneficial for any reason, such as support and so on? Or are there any disadvantages with using the Y strip vs the I strip, other than the edges/efficacy of adhesion? I was just wondering about the pros & cons of I strips vs Y strips.. Thanks you :)

i tried this today but the tape did not stay on for long. within 10 minutes of running the ends began to fall off although i did not touch the adhesive. its not supposed to do that right? there is a different way to tape that was shown on the instruction packet that came with the product, though, that shows the pink tape being taped on the bottom of the foot instead of the shin. will this be more effective?

The original KT Tape had the perforation down the middle so you could easily tear a "I" piece and convert it into a "Y" strip. Does the KT Tape Pro still have that perforation feature, or is it only in the original? If not, then why was that feature done away with? I found it very useful ... I just figured since the Pro version is supposed to be better than the original, there has to be some reason the perforation was taken away...? Thank you.
