Yes!! Oldsmobile videos!!!
Chinesium is the funniest joke word I've heard in years. I like the way you explain your process of doing things, clear and to the point.
A lot people like the Oldsmobile including me! Thanks for sharing! 😊👍
I did a 411ci motor based on an olds diesel block. It's still together and running 22 years later.
Just call that pulley cracking, a blessing in disguise!
Word of the day... Chineseium!! Love it! Can't wait to see your Oldsmobile done. I had a 72 olds w30 and I also had a 78 olds cutlass supreme. Those who never experienced an olds just don't know what it is to have one... but I do! Love it! Great job. 😁👍

I have a 78 cutlass supreme with ttops. Rust free and perfect original black leather interior. She's just been sitting in the garage for 20 years. Big plans in the near future for her. It has a olds 350 rocket under the hood with #8 heads. The motor came out of a delta 88. I can't wait to get that car going again. I'm dedication the restoration in memory of my mom. It was her car that she left me. I've had people off ridiculous money for it and refuse to let her go.

too bad their last big blocks were the junk 403. agreed the early 70's 455 were great, as a kid reaching driving age in the late 80's the junkyards were full of olds. pontiac, and cadillac big blocks, usually with a th400 attached. made hot rodding fun, bolted right up to the cheap, readily available gbodys that were everywhere. a 78-84 gbody originally equipped with the buick 3.8 usually had 3.27/3.73 gears. weld the spiders, stuff as big a tire as you could, and use a cheap torque converter and they made great street cars. cheap, fun, and if you blew it up just go get another one. a lot like the younger guys now do with the ls stuff. it was everywhere, and cheap.
Meet Warren Johnson many years ago at Mission Raceways. Great guy , always wondered what he would have done in a sportsman class like stock or super stock. Definitely an old school drag racer, hands on brains on . We need more like him .
Sometimes stuff just ain’t as easy as it’s supposed to be.
Awesome video, love the Olds stuff and glad to see you working on something for yourself. By the way, I'm the Canadian guy that stopped by for some merchandise on Presidents day. Thanks for taking the time to say hi! You and your entire crew are a serious class act!
It’s so cool that your putting an olds in your olds!
If all projects were easy more people would attempt them! But in the end what a great feeling it is to complete a long term project and step back and say I did that!
Hi Kevin, another awesome video, Its always a great day when you're working on your own projects.
I’m building my car slowly but surely for Sick Summer this year. One thing I took away from this video is that I shouldn’t let issues, become issues. Thanks for reminding me that building the car, should be just as fun as driving it!

Did I miss you circling back to that? As an old carburetor guy I have always been interested in this type of data. Any update would be great. Thanks for all your wonderful videos. Big fan.

The content you put out is absolutely fantastic. You can tell how passionate you are about cars and fabrication and it makes it that much more fun to watch. I do have one question, why aren’t their washers on those grade 8 bolts on the front cover? My OCD as a mechanic was killing me watching. 😂😂😂

It's great to see you go into such detail about the engine. Is there any reason why you chose a flying magnet style trigger wheel rather than using a hall effect sensor with a steel wheel?
@KSRPerformanceFabrication
Жыл бұрын
Its a Hall Effect sensor but for a magnetic trigger. From what I hear, it is the most reliable setup.
@JuniorJunison
Жыл бұрын
Also, hall effect sensors are typically used to measure the strength of a magnetic field, a steel flywheel isn't a magnet, and as such using a hall effect sensor on it would generate no usable information.

@Junior Junison incorrect... numerous cars use a hall sensor on a steel trigger wheel in oem applications.. I also use a hall affect sensor as my speed pick up on a plain steel trigger...

We use to run 36-1 or even 60-2 steel wheel with Hall. Doing that to my Viper engine also. Going seqvental (both fuel and spark) its better more "tooth" you have, more precise it will be. Wondering why JUST 12-1..

@@thehemiolds455 the only one in existence is that one they have on the GM engine display truck. I've looked hard for that engine here in Detroit and around Lansing as there were rumors one more existed but that was fruitless. Years ago Andy Mannarino had a shop on Grand River in Detroit. On his shelf sat an all aluminum 455 Olds, the only one I've ever seen or even heard of. Andy was pretty successful in NHRA pro stock in the 80s with a diesel block based calais body Olds

Dagnabit! The one time you shoulda preheated the metal to weld! LOL I know with aluminum it's really hard to tell if you should preheat. Iron and steel are easy... if it's hard preheat.... having to preheat aluminum is just hard to think about sometimes. I've chased cracks for days before I learned about it. Don't feel bad. Just is what it is and you learned a new trick. Sometimes an old man who's been there is just what you need. Drill out the cracks to stop them, preheat the entire pulley then have your way with it. Be careful of the heatsoak so that you don't turn it into a puddle, but keep it warm. If you want to you can heat treat it later, after you have what you want.
We put a 265 small block olds, with a turbo 350 in my 80 lemans. it was the first of many changes made to that car. It was a fun little project. "non standard engines" are fun to figure out how to get performance parts.
Me as well as many in the comments are a big fan of the Cutlass project! Will be a great addition to the fleet. Always enjoy the detailed info. Crank trigger setup details are definitely good to know!

I love the idea of After Dark with KSR.
Race cars are fun! If they weren't we wouldn't have them.
My dad and I are building an olds 455 we want to convert it to efi. So we are trying to figure out cam and crank issues so this video has helped us!
You ate a legend mate! Honest and no crap! Keep your head up mate!
I had no idea Kevin was a secret Oldsmobile guy! Not many of us out here who race them too. It's frustrating that a stock 455 block can only hold about 700hp, but the diesel blocks are good for at least 1200hp but getting harder to find.
At least you caught the crack and it didn’t wipe out all the sensors coming apart at 9k rpm.
You had me at Oldsmobile 😂

A oil pump that runs the fuel pump off of the rear of it might help out with some of your packaging. Just a thought love the Olds power!

Or use dry sump oil pump that has more stages to use one for vacuum (and centrifugal air separator at the back of it, like Auto-Verdi) Then run fuel pump in front to the same pulley, and belt. Thats what I building.. With Auto-Verdi pump and Aeromotive fuel pump)
@donbooze9379
Жыл бұрын
@augusti05 good point forgot he mentioned the vacuum pump. The other advantages of the oil / fuel pump on the same belt is if you lose one belt you lose both and the engine shuts down hopefully before doing too much damage.
Kevin that is hot cracking. Certain aluminum alloys are considered unweldable. 7075 and 2024 are the most common alloys encountered that are unweldable
If anyone can get this done, you are the one to get it done. Everyone that watches your channel and those that know you, you will get it done, come hell or high water, you have it under control Mr. Data. Kevin's Merk. Has a nice ring to it.
Kevin, when you go to do the fuel system, make sure you get yourself some of that Hydramat from Holley so you can pick up every last drop of fuel out of the tank.. It'll be really useful on the road drives. I don't know if it really makes a difference or not but something I'll do if I ever get to build my own engine is to grind off all the casting nodules inside the bottom of the block and then coat it with some good slick paint that can withstand the heat. The way I figure (and I know it's been a thing for a long time) is all those bumps are slowing down the oil return off the side of the block so if you make it slick it should help the oil return quicker. (as well as remove a little bit of weight) "Sometimes you just have to make stuff work.." Isn't that hot rodding at it's core? That's like a guy I used to watch that trailered stuff all over the country with his 68 Firebird.. you can't get ANY parts for a Pontiac at any regular store and a lot of the parts aren't made at all anymore. On one occasion he found out that you can hog out the bolt holes for a 351W thermostat housing and it fits a Pontiac V8, because literally no one makes Pontiac thermostat housings anymore, or at least they didn't at that point, I just searched them up and they are making them again. Crank trigger, you're running LS coils and sequential ignition/injection. Oh man, that engine is based off of the Rocket 350! That raised timing housing is indistinguishable if you know about the Rocket 350 and it's cousin designed by the same guy the 351C. (Bunkie Knudsen and his team of engineers) The one thing I notice you may have issues with is, where is the water pump going to sit? Seems like those sensors are going to be in the way of the pump. That pulley cooled too quick.. you weld things like that and you need to throw them in a bucket of hot sand or into an oven and let them slowly cool down. Preheating it also helps. It's actually a problem you can have with brass in bells and iron gears too.
Chineseium 😂🤣 I love this new word, sucks the pulley is toast. Keep up the good work bro 😎🤙

Hey Kevin.. I love the non standard stuff... Is refreshing to see something non LS or SBC/BBC.... I used to own a 77 Buick Landau that had the Olds 350 Rocket in it... had an alternator go out and took an act to figure out it was a Olds Rocket... A dude at the parts store came out and looked and then we took the original alternator and he researched around a few hours with the info from the block and alternator and then boom... you have an Olds rocket 350... was funny because that big ole boat would piss off vets and mustangs till we hit third LOL Keep up with the Cutlass content and thanks for all you do. Lol this is hilarious. I'm going for the fastest iron head, iron block Oldsmobile. I have something up my sleeve because of how much torque these motors put out. I ran a 9.6 in my 69 Cutlass and unfortunately steamwashed number 8 and didn't have a cage in my car so was no longer welcomed back. 😅. But I never thought in a million years the car was going to run that and either got lucky or there may have been some voodoo involved. Maybe one day we'll cross paths.

Better that popped on the table rather than on the dyno or track. cant wait to relive old memories thru this car. "Race cars are fun, ... Most of the time". Now that is a quote for a T-Shirt. Another favorite quote from Kevin is "Because, Race Car". Really enjoy the content, and most fabricators would never dare to show mistakes which makes Kevin so much more believable. Kevin there is nothing wrong with being a little differant. After quite a few years of small block chevy powered toys, and a Ford FE 390 powered shop truck that was a ton of fun to drive I started playing with AMC engines. After building some mild engines that worked pretty good I had a shop that did a lot of off road AMC stuff (like jeeps) I had a .020 over 401 built, 12 to 1 venolas, heads were '70 heads ported with seats cut for 208/ 172 valves, comp solid cam, this engine made over 550 crank hp in a lightened Javelin (3100lbs) 9inch ford rear, and super t-10 four speed. My stuff made me look a little weird so weird ir good. Funny is when people keep asking you if your car has been chevy swapped after you beat them at the local race spot. :) Keep being yourself Kevin that is who we love and have gotten to know.
