I hope you enjoyed my first 1.1 video! After my old station was destroyed in Duna Attacks episode 3, I needed a new one! Plus, it's a good test of the performance boosts in 1.1. Download for the Space Shuttle is in the description, as well as the music I used. If you have any suggestions of what you would like to see in future videos, feel free to let me know below! For those who are waiting for "Duna Attacks", I am waiting for Camera Tools (and a couple of other mods) to update for 1.1 before continuing. Thanks for the patience! Visual mods used are Scatterer and Planetshine

This is one of my favorite KSP videos on YT Matt. I've returned to watch it several times already! This is the video that actually got me to play KSP myself too. I think the success of this video comes from the truly fitting music and actually showing most of the aspects of KSP, in epic cinematic views... it shows a space shuttle, rocket launch and station build, and the many many posibilities in KSP. Hope to see more and great to see you posting new KSP vids again too :) Can't wait to see the results of the laythe series :) Greets ffrom the Netherlands!

  • @airforce9872

scratchspider yes, there is debris up there, but it will all eventually de-orbit and burn up. And the vast distances involved in space, even in near-Earth orbit, are almost unfathomable to our minds. It's essentially impossible to run into debris. To put in perspective, imagine a tennis ball is the Earth, now even with over a million pieces of debris in orbit, they are all the size of an atom. Our vehicles are molecule sized. The chances of a molecule running into another atom are near negligible.

+The Dockpacka Keeper Landing on Mun for the first time was one of the best moments in my gaming history, my heart was beating so hard :D It is mainly trail and error, however there are some basics you want to remember. - Get a stable orbit of Mun, somewhere between 7000m and 10000m is a safe altitude. - Face the retrograde, so you are traveling backwards - Pick a landing spot. Inside a crater is the best place, as it makes your altitude meter more accurate. On the daylight side also helps - Go into map view and start thrusting before the landing spot you have your eye on - Aim to have killed all sideways speed at the point when you are above your landing spot so you begin to fall down in a straight line. - Maintain a slow speed as you fall to prevent unexpectedly crash landing - Thrust slightly to slow yourself down to below about 7m/s - Remember to press F5 to save before every major step. - Remember landing gear. - Look for the shadow as you approach the surface. A spotlight is good if landing at night If you are crashing often, you may still be moving sideways slightly, that made me fail while I was new. I've landed on Mun 50+ times now, to the point where I don't use F5 because i like the danger :D

+Wabadebadoo Olelikemjoel With a Spaceplane its actually relatively easy. Thanks to having wings you have a way of controlling your descent without using fuel, and that gives you a relatively big area where you can with a bit of know how practically choose where exactly you want to go. All you need is to deorbit very roughly at the right point and enter the atmosphere just as the manual describes it. Without wings its a great deal harder, but on the 2nd try i managed to land a base on Eve only 40km away from the next base i was aiming for. (Which was my first attempt of landing somewhere near the rover which, embarrassingly, was on the other side of the planet)

Hey Matt, I just saw you also have this stuttering issue (every ~5-20 seconds it pauses for a few miliseconds). This bug has been around for ages and is related to the Garbage Collection in Unity, though it could be avoided by creating less garbage (means data that is no longer used). Squad is aware of this but it feels like they are not aware of how many people are affected. So maybe if all the KSP KZreadrs would talk to them we could get rid of it soon. I think after the switch to unity 5 it's about time to get rid of some nasty stuff.

Few tips: Be in a circular orbit below or above your target's orbit. The greater the difference in your orbits the faster you will "Phase" with the target Adjusting the Radial and Anti Radial can fine tune your close approach once you get one. While approaching closest approach (the last minute or so) burn to match orbits and keep your prograde vector on your target vector, once you get it you can literally stop within metres of the target without rcs. and btw, it took me about 50 hours to get my first docking, ksp has a steep learning curve so don't feel discouraged.

The closest I was able to get was 12km away but then I started drifting away due to different orbits. Im going to do that scenarios.

+camBC It's only worth the money if you have an SSTO, meaning your only cost is the fuel: with the cost of the fuel tank you discard, it's really not worth it using the shuttle. Edit: Well... It's *usually* not worth it. I didn't do the math for the specific vehicles so I can't say with 100% certainty.

+camBC This, and the growing concerns of safety and ageing technology/hardware. The columbia disaster was one of the biggest (if not the number 1 contributer) factors leading to the termination of the shuttle program. The shuttle was so expensive to fly because it wasn't used nearly as frequently as was originally intended.

Matt Lowne Chicken and egg, though: one of the reasons it wasn't used more often was that it was so expensive to fly. "Astronomical" is an adjective you hear often at NASA, I'd expect, but you'd rather it didn't apply to the costs involved in refurbishing your craft after each successful launch. Add the fact that it was as nimble as a flying brick and as tough as a sand castle, that it would cook the occupants if the cargo bay doors got stuck while in orbit, and a myriad of other fun factoids, and I think the only reason it didn't get retired earlier was that it was so damn cool - and that, half a decade *after* it was retired, we still don't have a real replacement.
