Kristaps Porzingis - Defensive Dynamo

Спорт

Kristaps Porzingis is a sensation. He’s already a really good rim protector. The phenomenal footwork he displays, especially on the perimeter, allows Kris to keep the ball handlers in front of him. His instincts are sharp, his reads are instant, and his hands have proven excellent; There are times the ball seems to just pop out from great players mid-stride, but upon closer examination, it’s all this kid. He’s currently sixth in the league with 1.9 blocks per game, while sitting fourth in terms of total blocks (just above guys like Anthony Davis, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Rudy Gobert).
It takes a special kind of toughness to be in New York on draft night, get booed, then have your name chanted in The World’s Most Famous Arena only a few months later. That toughness carries over to the court, and NBA players have learned (some more quickly than others) that Kris gets stops. Yes, he stands at 7’3’’, so you’d expect him to be swatting shots, but it is not easy for a young big man to learn the intricacies and responsibilities of anchoring an NBA defense, especially not one who is coming from overseas. Kris, however, is a quick study. His timing and patience are a work in progress (as evidenced by being in the top 20 for total number of fouls this season), but he’s still only 20 years old.
If you didn’t already know, this kid is for real. He’s got the work ethic, an explosive offensive skill set, and of course, dynamic defensive prowess. He’s going to be a FORCE in the league for years to come.
Be prepared to hear “Blocked by Porzingis” a lot.

The most incredible thing about this video is that damn near every block he gets the Knicks gained a possession, none of that spiking the ball to the third row crap. He can also stay with point guards because he has incredible length and absurd lateral quickness for someone who is 7'3.

Great video. A lot of the videos on Porzingis just focuses on his offense. His real impact on the game is his ability to defend the rim and rebound. His rebounding was inconsistent last year, but the Knicks were at their best (around .500) when he was grabbing around 11.5 RPG for a stretch. If free agents are smart, they'll want to come to the Knicks, not because of Carmelo, Rose, or the market size. They should want to play with the 20 yr old Porzingis, who could be an Anthony Davis caliber player in a few years. Dynasties are built around defensive anchors. If he can stay healthy, he should become of the most the versatile and 'impactful' players in the NBA. He could score from anywhere on the court. He defend from anywhere on the court. He protects the rim. He could control the defensive glass, and also attack the offensive glass. He could make smart passes (critical in the triangle) and make good offensive decisions (although he is prone to chuck too many 3s). And his physical tools (height/length) isn't something that you can teach. If the Knicks are able to turn the franchise around, it would likely be due to him. His scoring production may be hindered playing with Anthony, Rose, and whatever big name free agent they attract this/next off-season, but he'll still have the ability to dominate on the offensive when needed. He needs to get stronger (not necessarily heavier) to be more effective on the block and for durability purposes, work on fouling less, and get more consistent on the glass (and his jumper).
