52 years later and I still love this song.

Met Kris twice. He loved his fans and hung out with us in the parking lot after the show. I'll never forget that evening in Palm Springs.

Kris was the poet laureate of my generation. He has no equal. "Why Me Lord?" will be played at my memorial service.

he was a officer in our Air Force, served in Vietnam Nam, was a Rhode Scholar and one hell of a song writer, he said many times he isn't a good singer, hearing him sing 3 songs he wrote proves otherwise, this, Sunday morning, and why me lord.... I miss the Highway Men

50 years later, as an old man, he sings this with Roseanne Cash. It's beautiful, both now and 50 years ago.

Dog gone I had forgotten about this song. I remember daddy playing it while we were working the farm in the trucks. Glad I found it because of the memories. And, mama and daddy were married in 1958 and still together. Blessed, thank you Jesus!

I just came across it. Sending a copy from ebay to my son and his recent bride.

I not only love the songs that Kris wrote but I love to hear him sing them. He doesn't have a perfect or polished voice but that's part of the realism and the charm. I feel it when he sings it, knowing that he's been there and felt every word. One of the best songwriters of this or any time.

Agree. It is the passion that a person performs a song. You don't need a so-called great voice if the passion is in it. There are many examples of performers with unique sounds from their different voices with the passion.

Music is filled with people who 'couldn't sing'. Dylan, Neil Young, maybe Chris are good examples. It's almost like they aren't really trying to 'sing right'. But they sing their songs like no one else, and it works!

About three weeks ago I sent the link to this song to my wife, writing: "Beautiful song. It made me think of you." She wrote back: "Now you did it -- you made me cry. I love you Kev with all my heart." She passed away last week after a sudden heart attack. We played the song at her service yesterday. I gather Kris is going through some difficult health issues. I wish I could tell him how much this song means to me now and how much it will mean to me for the rest of my life..

Kevin, I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a love in my life, that if she was taken away, I would pray that I be taken also, the void would be too great. I also gave a small gift to her that says it all, in the same way your song to your wife says the way you feel about her. I gave her a coffee cup with a painting of two cute dogs on it, with their noses touching each other, with love in their eyes and a shape of a love heart floating above them.The caption above reads " loving you is what I do best "

I met him once and he was the kindest man I met. He’s a great songwriter and a Rhodes Scholar

Kris is a very intelligent man, and a great songwriter, musician, and singer. He flew helicopters in the Army, tought literature at West point, and could have been a professor at Oxford where he studied literature, but thank God he chose to write and sing music. He wrote so many songs for so many artists in the music business. I'm so glad I enjoyed his music in my lifetime. Enjoy your retirement Kris.

Kris wanted so badly for Johnny Cash to sing "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and he flew a helicopter to Cash's house, personally I like Kris's version better than Cash's.

I saw him at at the stage coach festival, He filled in for Loretta Lynn. That couldn't make, He came out on stage all by yourself. A guitar and a hermonica. He was only supposed to be on stage for about forty five minutes, An hour and a 1/2 later. They started blinking the lights telling him he had to quit. He talked to the audience And most of the songs he sang were ones he wrote. He made you feel like it was a one on one experience,,,, It was awesome.

I saw him in Dallas many years ago in the 70's. I first heard him at a Navy exchange in Virginia and INSTANTLY WAS HOOKED. My dad used to say how he put POETRY TO MUSIC.

His music...an inspiration for me learn guitar...his voice telling a story, pure inspiration. I'M no good compared to him, but we all can make a joyful noise. Thank you Lord for this man.

One of the best song's of all times, in my humble opinion!!!!!

I'm a disabled Vietnam veteran who loves the magical way he puts words to a song. Charlie Pride stated the same about him. I can sit and listen to his songs all day long. He was a Rhodes scholar, an army helicopter pilot, and great songwriter, and singer of songs. His songs will touch your heart in a way you never thought possible. He was truly a poetic writer of words in a way that that few others could even compare, other than his idol, Hank Williams. Enough said, I salute you Kris !!

This guy is a poet. The way his lyrics sound so simple is not a sign that the lyrics are simple. He has a way of making every song fit every story - sunday morning / darby's castle / bobby mcGee / lovin' her . . / - pick the song, the words just seem to fall together so easily . . . This is not a simple task, it is the sign of a true poet. "well I woke up Sunday mornin' with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt; and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert . . . Eminem would take that rhyme gladly!!

Kris really makes you miss the great singers and songwriters of the 60 and 70s. I don't think the world will ever be gifted with that kind of talent again.

I've been listening to this song since it was released in 72. I was 12. Its been making me cry for 50 years. Not all songs I thought were my favorite ever lasted 50 years even though I still love them. I havent had a wife that long either. Thats a long time fellas!

This is his best work, his best lines, it leaves me speechless, and crying.

Absolutely the most beautiful song intro ever. Kris's lyrics are simply amazing.

It's 1/28/2021. This performance was done almost 50 years ago. Kris announced his retirement today. He's is 84 years of age.

I've always loved his songs and no one can sing them like he does. The look of reflective memory on his face makes me think he is reliving this love each time he sings it. We love you Kris.

It just doesn't get any smoother than this. This version of him performing his most perfect song is a perfect tribute to a wonderful songwriter, singer & talented entertainer. Makes one want to cry bittersweet tears over such fantastic contributions to the music world he gave us, and the sad realism that all we have now from him, is all we will ever have. At age 15, as a busboy at the "Big Hotel", one of my jobs was cleaning up the bar. The bartenender always left me coins for the jukebox. This was always the first song I played. Thanks, Kris!

My husband is 77 yrs old Im 23 years younger dedicated this song to me... Ive known my husband since age 9 yep 45 yrs ago never understood this song till we married!!! Love this song so beautiful,

I grew up listening to him in the 70s. A few years ago I found a box on the side of rhe road which I thought was books. In it was a yearbook from a boys college in California and Kris was in it. He was on the yearbook committee and play3d football. I'll keep it forever.

There will never be another like Kris. So many great songs, plus he's a very good guy.

Thanks for showing the lyrics. The first two lines sound like something an airplane pilot might write; maybe that came from his helicopter experience in the Army. Beautiful song.

Lost my fiancee to a massive heart attack in 1992 and we never had a chance to settle a spat or say goodbye. He has visited me in my dreams many times including last night, said he wanted to talk. Loving him was so much easier than anything I ever have experienced. Perhaps in Heaven we will talk again.

Lovely love song, I appreciate this song more after I lost my husband in January 2016.

Kris has natural talent and the voice to match! His songs are, been there done that, and pure country. I love every song he ever made. He is great at what he does, way to go.Kris, you are the best! 🎸💤🤠

He just seems so humble and kind.. and when he played with Johnny, Waylon and Willie, he just looks at these guys with deep admiration and respect. You can tell that they were truly friends..

I have loved his music since the early 70's. He fascinated me, when I started reading all he had accomplished and listening to every song he had written then. I was 18 and thought he was they perfect man! Anyone who could write songs like that and look like he did...wow!! Then, he married Rita. 😭 I still like to look at him and still love his songs. Every one is a masterpiece of poetry...even Silver Tongued Devil.

as a 43 year old im only learning about cris now and can I say I love this im watching cris and the highway men , all I can say is "savage "
