Really good review with examples, close-up shots and clear explanations. Not a lot of dead time. You speak very clearly and don't ramble. All in all, great job with the video.

I purchased a Kreg table in late 2018, and noticed some features have improved over the version in the video. No longer need to use a screw driver for adjusting the fence and the fence lock down is with a lever. The aux power switch has a receptacle for the router and dust collector. I went ahead and purchased the lift and attempted to put a ryobi router in the lift but it did not fit; ended up putting a porter cable in and it fit perfectly. Happy with the quality of this set up

I watched this video about two months ago when I was looking to buy a router table. This is what I ended up getting. Glad I found the video again. I needed a refresher on how to use a a jointer. My jointer is old, has a nicked blade I can't replace and for some reason it is way out of adjustment and I can't get it tuned back in. But I paid $40 bucks for it and it served me well. I have a project today I wanted to work on and I needed a jointer. Going to try out the Kreg table. By the way... LOVE my table. THanks for the video.

Great video I enjoyed watching it thanks for taking the time to make it! I wish I could afford this router table I have looked at it before and it is really nice but I just have the $99 Ryobi cheap sucker with the cheap $69 Ryobi router, surprisingly though it does have the feature that allows me to raise and lower the router from the top of the table with a nut driver I rigged up and it did come with the box that you can hook your shop vac plug into so it turns on with the router, the insert plate is such cheap plastic though but I am pretty handy and added some shims to mine and got it nice and flat, not bad for a setup that only cost $170 all together!

A parallel stop is now being produced with an eccentric wheel that only pushes. When lowering the lever (on the right), the parallel stop is aligned with the table and leaves the mark.

do you think your burn-out was caused by bit speed? I've found that reducing RPM's helps as long as the bit is sharp. What is your view. Additionally does the new style plate have more strength my old version warped under the weight of the lift and motor.

You know, I didn't play around with using the fixed base, but you could be right that it'd be slightly easier. Overall the trouble with the PC is doing everything from below the table and fine-tuning adjustments are tough.

I looks at switches for the router tables and thy can get pricey. Cost me 12 dollars to put a short extension cord on to a 2x4 metal gang box with a switch that has an outdoor cover that goes to a 2x4 metal gang with outlet for router and shop vac.

the Festool OF 1400 router DOES have this feature, there is a suction "plate" which mounts around the router-base opening, and a sleeve on the motor housing which marry up together to form a semi-sealed area for dust collection in this upside down mode of operation, which when viewing their videos on this machine prove to be quite an effective solution to this problem .

one suggestion: get a bearing set, use a smaller bearing, exposes more of the profile, as most of the cutters that use bearings have the capability to change them out.

Can you explain me why you need the fence while using a bit with a bearing? With these bits the wood slides in contact with the bearing.

  • @HighlandWoodworking

    @HighlandWoodworking

While you can use a bearing bit without a fence when routing on a router table, when trimming straight sided work, the fence adds a level of safety and accuracy to your routing operation. With the fence in line with the bearing, on the infeed side of the cut the material is well supported at the moment it engages the cutting bit (but before the material is riding on the bearing). Without a fence, freehanding the material into the bit increases the chances of kickback the moment the material begins to be but, before the material starts to ride on the bearing. On the outfeedside of the fence, once the last portion of the material leaves the bearing, but is still being cut, the fence keeps the material from being pushed and wrapping around the bit, cutting further than you expected. This "moment" and the way you push the material into the bit can cause a kickback event, especially when you push a corner of the work piece right into the bit. This is why when routing curved pieces with a bearing bit one should use a starter pin. This gives some support to the material as the bit begins to cut, but before the material is riding on the bearing. Once your stock is riding on the bearing, you can move your material off the starter pin and continue to cut the irregular perimeter of the work, while staying engaged with the roller bearing. Since it takes so little time to align a fence with a roller bearing on a router bit, why not do it, to help ensure optimal cutting results? Regards, Ed Highland Woodworking

I have a question.... I have a Jessem router table. I have recently saw the Kreg fence system and loved it. So here's the question. Is anyone aware if a Kreg fence system will be something I could put on my Jessem router table and make it work. Any input would be appreciated. GP

Gary, The Kreg fence mounts by way of a right angle mounting bracket that screws to the bottom right edge of a router table top. What could get in the way would be the particular stand/base you have that your router top is attached to. An overhang of the top of a couple of inches from the edge of the stand is enough to bolt the right angle mounting bracket to the underneath of the top. What is needed on the left hand side of the top is a milled thru slot that is 1/2" wide and of a length you can choose (around 6-8 inches) that lets the fence have a lock down to the table on the out feed side of the fence. Take a look at the instructions for the fence to see details on mounting. www.kregtool.com/prodimages/prs1010%20router%20table%20fence%20instructions.pdf Regards, Ed Highland Woodworking

Wouldn't it be easier to use the fixed base for the porter cable rather than the plunge base? If you use the fixed base, the router will drop out of the bottom easily.

Just checked out the Triton Router on e-bay $300 - $500. Looked just like the one in the video. He said they are not that expensive, compared to what ? My Roybi was $65 and my Craftsman was $100. Sears wants $600 for the router table Home Depot $500.

+William Wynn Highland Woodworking currently has the Triton 2 1/4 HP Router on sale for $199.99. More than $100, but you get quite a few more features - especially the "through the table" height adjustment - which saves you having to purchase a router lift (quite pricey as well!). Just a thought for those using a router in a table. The Triton Router can be found here: www.highlandwoodworking.com/triton2-14hpplungerouter-4.aspx

I ended up building my own with some old counter top scrap, and just made a custom lift with the crank handle on the side of the table to raise and lower the router, cheaper and you can build it to your own needs.

I bought this table partially due to the review in this video, and now I regret it. If you decide to upgrade to the Kreg router lift it is absolutely terrible. It's the worst designed router lift I've ever seen. This table is decent, but has a slight dip in it. It is not perfectly flat. If you've got the cash do yourself a favor and go with General's Excalibur 40-200C table paired with the Excalibur 40-125 router lift. Excalibur's table top is cast iron, while the Kreg appears to be MDF. The Excalibur system was ranked "Best Overall" by Fine Woodworking magazine. If you're looking for something cheaper, go with the Jessem Rout-R-Lift II Complete Table System, which includes a nice router lift. It was deemed "Best Value" by the same magazine. The Kreg table is decent, but the horrible lift makes it not even worth buying. The table is also set up different than other manufacturers, so if you want to buy a different lift you have to get an adapter for the Kreg table. If you never plan on upgrading to a lift, then this table alone might work OK.
