@spjotvold14 жыл бұрын
Nice to see it from that angle! It's a live performance, in a different way than, for instance, an acoustic jazz trio. You can apply many different sounds, pre-recorded vocals, loops and samples to the same keyboard and use it as a controller to trigger and play as you wish. Ralf plays a lot live, but obviously much of Kraftwerks music is programmed and sequenced in advance. They do variations with filters and other parameters and keep the tracks fresh. It's not just pressing play as some probably think.. :-)

This has been a $1,000,000 question me and my mates have wondered for years. I've seen Kraftwerk in full line up and now with Sir Hutter and his new three musicians. It serves to confirm, they were and still are 'masters' of the electronic sound, and the work going into each show with 1,000's of samples is just class. Thanks so much for this upload. Very nice and rare to have top-down view to see what they are doing. They seem to want to conceal that with their podium-like setup, I guess for conceptual reasons. Wholesome to see them improvising and "jamming" together, even fucking up some... goes completely against the idea of them as precise and humorless control freaks. Thanks

for some reason, I thought they were using the actually vintage they used in the original recordings. It's still cool tho.
@MrTartlet
9 жыл бұрын
I think for Kraftwerk the usage of computer synthesis not only helps to streamline their performances but also helps them keep their "artificial/minimalistic" look up to date. Besides, in a live performance use of computer synthesis will do just fine, as most of the existing sound delivery methods won't be able to project subtle nuances in sound present in real vintage equipment. In a studio situation it might matter. Plus, who would want to haul an Orchestron to every performance?
@ItsNotaTuhmah
8 жыл бұрын
They spents years digitalizing their analog equipment, so the 'sound' itself it's more or less the same. They are just doing what they have done all their life: advancing with the technology.
@Arctic_Falcon

What you see on the stage is what is being used. There are clearly multiple tablets (I see two Sony Tap 20 or 21s; and two iPads -- not sure what Ralf's using but it looks too large to be an iPad, likely a Surface Pro or Tap 11) powering midi controllers. They started using this setup a few years ago. From 2002 up until a few years ago they used Sony VAIO laptops with midi controllers. They've worked with Sony for decades. Haven't seen anything that resembles an analog device since the 1998 tour.

Even with a bit of BTS (behind-the-scenes) view, there is still so much mystery and intrigue about what goes into their performances!
Why is it wrong to use modern technology for their music. Everything evolves. That they are making music since the 1970s doesn't mean they have to use the old gear.

At least it finally shows what they are doing. All of the head-on videos showing them live make it seem like they might not be doing anything and just making movements to pre-sequenced music.

@ItsNotaTuhmah

They spents years digitalizing their analog equipment, so the 'sound' itself it's more or less the same. They are just doing what they have done all their life: advancing with the technology.

They always used technology and especially new technology. First Sequencer used in Trans Europe Express. First Sequencer that was able to do the drum tracks and synchronize that with the sequencer in 1981 (called Triggersumme).

I'm sure Ralf said in interviews that they worked on a custom software designed for their needs. They also took the gargantuan job of digitalizing all their old equipment into sound banks, thus they use the 'same' sounds of old in new technology.
