KPCS: Larry David

Ойын-сауық

Join Kevin as he sits down with television legend, Larry David (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) as they chat about creating two of the most memorable sitcoms. Learn of Larry's disdain for the phrase "happy new year," how he warned Woody Allen that he is going to be a horrible leading man, and how one can quit their job on Friday to return on Monday like it never happened.

I'm just a Protestant white guy from the South, but there's a vibe about Jewish/NYC humor that really strikes me as being the heart of all American stand-up. I guess it goes back to Vaudville and the early days of radio. Then 3 Stooges through Mel Brooks' and Woody Alens' heydays. I mean, you have the Irish/Catholic influence of Carlin, too, as well as the whole "When Stand-Up Stood Out" crew out of Boston, also Irish/Catholic, but you really appreciate what being sort of the underdogs in the past fostered in both stand-up comedy and Marvel and DC Comics. What gives? And look how a pre-Internet movie like "Mr.Saturday Night" gave rise to a common catchphrase on FaceBook and KZread...."You see what I did there?"/"I see what you did there".

The ultimate success of SEINFELD was a result of the writing. The fact that the vast majority of shows were able to set up & resolve four distinct story lines (and usually resolve them by having them merge together brilliantly) in only 22 minutes is incredible. Wannabe writers could spend four years just studying SEINFELD scripts to learn how to tell a story with economy. And the other secret to its success is it never fell into the trap of prescribing a moral or life lesson (which just about every other sitcom fell into once it became successful). Until the final episode, that is (when the characters finally got their comeuppance). Which is why it didn't work.

FYI one of the main writers for "Seinfeld" went back to school and became a medical doctor, showbiz is so shitty for most writers. Not sure how to process that information, even. Showbiz is our window into how badly corporate America is run, I guess. Good luck, everyone.

@@HEAD3455 it wasn’t “canned laughter” you dullard, it was always genuine. when shooting, if the audience didn’t laugh enough they’d do a rewrite right there on set until they nailed it. also, you have no taste.

We actually learned to love it though and drove from Columbus to Cleveland, Ohio on a winter night with the top down - heater blasting. Good times! I'm such a huge Larry David fan and love his work. That story of how he pretended he wasnt fired and sat at the monday meeting is too good. Kramer had to be involved in it, even if George did it on the show and i think he wasnt involved, somehow it also checks with one of the best Seinfeld episodes ever where Kramer shows up for work and just keeps going until they fired him.
