Excellent side trip to the harbor. Seeing those old sailing ships was a real treat. Real people, real places, good times. Cool museum. Since money is a human construct, and only the trust and faith of the people using it, in the people administering it, is paramount for it to work. In one respect it's a system built from a house of cards but the cards still manage to stay out most of the time. It's what helped build modern society and a marvel when you think about it. You can only carry around so much gold or jewels.

My HS friend married a Civil Engineer back in the early '70s. He worked for ARCO Oil and they sent him to Louisiana, then NYC, then Jakarta! I used to get those folded airmail letters from them from there and think, how exotic!! Now it's half a century later and I get to see it myself, thanks to STL. STILL exotic, yet I see I would be totally at ease there!!

The working schooners brought a tear to my eye. A friend and I w were sailing from the BVI to Florida. Late one night the boat sprang a leak. The bilge pumps and our 5 gallon buckets couldn't keep up. An East European freighter answered our SOS. They treated us so well. Delivering us to their next port in the Turks and Caycos. These freighter operators are hard workers. And generous people. I'm looking forward to your boat trips.

Great vid! That Batavia Marina building was spectacular. Interesting old Aussie currency -- the Pound note was before we switched to decimal/dollar currency -- 14 Feb 1966 -- a few years before I was born (but a memorable date cemented in a catchy advertising tune at the time); the other paper notes all with "Commonwealth of Australia" are before our changeover to the polymer notes we use now -- and the ones you had are from early paper series, as later versions post mid 1970s just used "Australia". Thanks for the Canadian insight -- didn't know about Toonies, only Loonies. I never really had Indonesia on my holiday radar (too many Aussies flock to Bali and that's not my idea of a holiday) -- but there's a lot more of the country I would now like to see. Cool little pub you found too.

Thanks for that info Andrew. That must have been a ship from the British East India Company. Here's just one fascinating account I found: -Mary Ann (or Mary Anne) was launched at Batavia in 1807. In 1815-1816 she transported convicts from London to Port Jackson. On 25 December 1821 Captain Henry Warrington sailed from Dartmouth. Mary Ann stopped at Rio de Janeiro 16 February 1822 before sailing on to Van Diemen's Land on the 26th. She arrived at Hobart Town on 2 May 1822. She had embarked 108 female convicts, one of whom had died on route. She landed 45 at Hobart. She then sailed on to Sydney where she landed 62. She was at Batavia on 5 August. On her way from Sydney she spent 36 hours aground on the south-east side of "Gooning" Island in the Banda Sea. She sustained damage, including the loss of anchors and cables, and became leaky. History United Kingdom Name Mary Ann Launched 1808, Batavia Fate Last listed in 1830 General characteristics Tons burthen 474,[1] or 479[2] (bm) Armament 1813: 6 × 6-pounder guns 1815: 6 × 6-pounder guns + 10 × 12-pounder carronades Notes Teak-built

YES, obviously I would try promote the province of my parents. However, I myself never went there. And most of what you are visiting and experiencing, I do not know of since I left Indonesia end 1968. Spent less than 4 year altogether in my countries, not even born there (in Holland). Grew up in several countries because my father was a multi-lingual Diplomat sent abroad all the time. But after 55 years time to go back "home" even though it won't be for long. Home is where the heart is. Never married. Almost several times but it never happened. However, I received a couple marriage proposals. Strange, at my age. Looks bachelorhood coming to an end, as long as she agrees to travel with me. How about visiting every country that there is? Gotta move fast, time is catching up on me, BUT I have to experience what you guys are experiencing. "Landlocked" too long, feet getting itchy.

Thanks. Pleased to see one of my core Thai-centric subscribers watching this 'away' series. Actually, I'm seriously thinking of binning the rest of this series (vs wasting many more hours editing) as so few are watching. Note in my analytics from YT yet again this week: "Viewers are showing less interest in this video, contributing to 60% fewer views than usual"... And the YT new video DOA 'Sorry, we won't be promoting your vid' notice ala: "Click-through rate and view duration may influence how widely a video is recommended on KZread Home or Up next" (95% of a vids views btw). And the kicker "Changing the title or thumbnail can attract more viewers" IE: add a gobsmacked face or even better, boobs or butts, plus a vacuous but attn grabbing title ala "We Didn't Expect THIS" (zzzz....) With these 'standards' both viewers and YT are dumbing down this platform on par with fidget spinners or most Twitter/X posts. At least i thoroughly enjoyed filming this series. STL

@@SideTripLife Jakarta is a very tough city to be a tourist. Every other major Asian city is swamped with double deck bus tours and identifiable Instagram sites but Jakarta doesn't have an equivalent. It's a very tough nut to crack. You've already found some great places to share and I'm sure you would have found more. I completely understand your frustration both with the viewership and particularly with YTs comments. You have a rare talent for making personal connections with your audience based on the content you provide and your narration without the goofy thumbnails that everyone else posts. If you do decide to bin the remaining Jakarta content I'll completely understand why. Keep doing what makes you happy and keep spreading cheer on your channel. I will certainly keep watching.

@@SideTripLife actually I think you're doing something RIGHT! Yes, far too much of it is dumbed down on this platform. The "wild west" BS thumbnails and bait-click headlines turn me off a channel really quickly. I think Alphabet (like Meta) are after a different audience that is far less mature and has the attention span of a gnat... but you've only got to look at the garbage that's on "reality" TV shows nowadays (at least here in Aus; I'm sure elsewhere too) and the "masses" are being drawn into some really trashy content. I hope you don't bin it -- I do love your side trips since I discovered your channel. Here's one stat YT probably doesn't share: the number of channels I have with the bell turned on (one, yours!) vs the number that I "don't recommend" in my feed (usually about a dozen a day, especially with the sleazy thumbnails and click-bait claims -- that's not just Thai, but golf, trading and others that all fall to the same level). I hope more channels pick up on your style -- quality entertainment, well paced and edited, always looking forward to the next episode.

For anyone watching this and thinking of planning a trip to Jakarta I would only come if you are passing through and stay for a max of 48 hours. E.g. You have a flight transfer or you are flying into Jakarta as part of a trip to Indonesia. Don't go out of your way to visit. I've lived in Indonesia for 26 years of which 18 have been spent in Jakarta. Don't get me wrong, Indonesia is a fantastic place to visit (and live), but Jakarta itself is not worth going out of your way for. There's Bali, ijen, Bromo, Tanah Toraja, Toba, Komodo and a host of other places to see, the people are very friendly, the food is great, prices are relatively low and in 25 years I've never had a security issue even in Jakarta

AND NOW trying to PROMOTE the province of the people of Minahasa in northern Sulawesi island who are mostly called Menadonese (capital is Menado) Minahasans are an indigenous ethnic group in mostly multi-racial and multi-cultural society that are mainly CHRISTIANS with many Churches as the Gospel was spread by the Dutch that colonized Indonesia over 350 years. The influence of the European colonists, missionaries, and Chinese traders can still be seen today in the architecture and traditions. FOODWISE - Menadose eat the spiciest foods - Menadones fried chicken considered best by world top chefs a couple of times - Unique foods include: 1 | Tinu'tuan (or Bubur Manado) Tinu'tuan is traditional Manado porridge. ... 2 | Ayam Rica-Rica. ... 3 | Garo Bunga Pepaya (Garo Papaya Flower) ... 4 | Cakalang Fufu and other Seafood. ... 5 | Mouthwatering Satay or Sate. ... 6 | Klappertaart. ... 7 | Nasi Jaha. ... 8 | Panada. THINGS TO DO IN MENADO: Bunaken National Marine, Christ Blessing Statue, Statue of Jesus the Redeemer , Menado Town Square, Tangkoko Research station, Tunan Waterfall, Boulevard area, Menado Resort, Rumah Alam Menado Adventure Park, Kasih Hill, Tolerance Monument Top Attractions in Minahasa 1. Lihaga Island - with white sand and many wonderful fish haven't seen before. 2. Nain Island - It was so beautiful! The white soft sand, crystal clear water, green corals, sea breeze, everything is perfect 3. Pulisan Beach- the beauty of the beaches is amazing 4. Mount Klabat - Volcanos. It is also possible to do the trek without guides 5. Likupang Beach - there is white sand and beautifull view. 6. Tunan Waterfall - there is a pool at the base of the falls so you can swim if u want to. 7. Baling-Baling Island - The underwater panorama at this beach is very beautiful. On this island, you can do fishing, snorkeling and diving... 8. Mahembang Beach - This is one of the best places here in Minahasa. From the crystal-clear seawater to the nearby lake 9. Tuanku Imam Bonjol Gravesite - on the way to Lake Tondano and Lake Linow 10. Lakban Beach - Naga island in south Minahasa 11. Nimanga River Rafting Experience in Manado North Sulawesi. ARCHAELOGICALLY, North Sulawesi nhabited for 30,000 years. Archaeologists found stone artifacts and evidence of habitation 26,000 years In Liang Sarru cave on the island of Salibabu. In 670, leaders of the different tribes, all speaking different languages met by a stone known as Watu Pinawetengan and founded a community of independent states formING one unit. This is then considered the first DEMOCRACY. Ancestorically, suspectedly Mongols landed over 800 years ago, supposedly a Genghis Khan General fleeing with entourage for the love of a palace maiden. And the fable of Toar and Lumimut arose, our Adam and Eve. North Sulawesi was one of the first Indo-Eurasian communities. The first king of Manado was Muntu Untu who was half Spanish. Muntu Untu became King in 1630, but not long after, the Spanish sold Minahasa (North Sulawesi) to the Portuguese for 350,000 ducats. Minahasa even tried to secede from Indonesia in the late 50s Permesta rebellion with the famous CIA pilot Alan Pope involved. A Menadonese MIG fighter pilot even shot a rocket into the Palace office of President Sukarno. TODAY, Minahasa has developed to be a fascinating province to visit with modern facilities and most hospitable people with island resorts, parks and historical places aplenty. And especially the native foods are a wonder to enjoy. FURTHER, west of Sulawesi are the Moluccan islands which is the fabled SPICE ISLANDs. Maluku's two national parks bring in few visitors, but its spice-trade-era and World War II historic sites are of interest to history buffs. It is the sensational diving, however, that lures most visitors. With so much sea, virtually every type of marine topography can be found here. And east is the largest island Kalimantan (Borneo) where the new Indonesian capital city NUSANTARA is being constructed which is 25% completed and 2045 is targetted for its finish. With coastal cities, floating villages and incredible national parks, the island offers the opportunity for adventurous travelers for stunning rainforest exploration to infinity. It is one of those few places in the world where you can feel close to the earth and its natural wonders. And that should surely make Menado an important transit hub.

Sorry bout that. I cram way too much content into each vid. I should do like others & just pop into a Jakarta Mcdonalds and film a quick vid or do mostly selfie-walky/talky style to 'fill' most of a vid, or do a simple 'street food challenge' etc etc, as these are way easier to make, much faster and seem to get a lot more views too. And yes, many are using inexpensive 3rd world online editors to edit their vids but I just do it the ol fashioned way. I also like to take time to enjoy a place without filming or editing so it takes what it takes. Cheers :)
