There was a firmware update meanwhile, but it didn't add any functionality for the SQ-64 itself. It did add the computer application for some configuration. SQ-64 Is literally a mash up of Electribe 2's sequencer plus Beatstep Pro and a bit of Elektron sequncer probability thrown in for good measure. I don't hate it, but given KORG's track record with firmware updates (looking at you E2S) I wouldn't hold my breath for extra features or quality of life improvements on the thing further down the line.

As beautiful as this thing looks, the Electribe 2 out the box can already does 16 tracks with 64 steps, [which it does in 4 banks]. If you upgrade E2s firmware you can add pattern 'chaining' to that too. You could easily use the electribe to sequence external gear, plus its steps includes polyphony for chords etc. So yeah, dispite the sleak looks i have to say E2s has already been there. I like the probability stuff though. If only Loopop hadn't already convinced me to get a beatstep pro.... ;)

I prototyped a few ideas for products, but I couldn't commit. All Elektron needs to do is make a standalone sequencer with 256 steps, 32-64 tracks, 16 voice polyphony, chord and scale mode and overbridge compatibility and it would destroy the competition. I'd like to be able to program the drum sequencer to randomly send a gate signal from one of its gate outputs each step. If it can do that, it's an insta-buy for me. Also, can it send unquantized pitch CV? I kinda wish the step pads were translucent, and that it had a knob above each step column, but other than that, I love the form factor. Although I worry about the UI a bit - not a fan of button combos. EDIT: Almost forgot, if you arpeggiate a chord, can the entire chord be sent via pitch CV?

When chaining patterns, do longer sustained notes get truncated when the pattern switches or is it seamless so that you can think of two 64 step patterns as 128? The mc 707 has a really bad bug so that you really can’t use the clip chaining to make long pad phrases because when the clip chains, the sustained nots get chopped abruptly.

Lets say I just have a volca keys and I want to #1 play it with an Akai mini plus, and #2 sequence it with the SQ-64 via MIDI, what would be connected into what? Akai midi out into SQ-64, and through SQ-64 into Keys? Thank you

When in CONTROL mode (5:52), do running sequences keep running as normal? You just mentioned it, and the manual doesn't specify. It'd be useful, for example, to control synth parameters in real-time while it plays the sequence. Thanks, and thanks for the review!

Great video as always. Thank you. I just picked an SQ-64 up the other day, but I'm noticing a serious issue with the loop mode. Tracks B,C and D, don't stay in phase when a loop is released. For some reason Track A will stay in phase. Have you (or any one else here?) come across this issue with theirs? If so, is there a fix?

I am not able to delete additional pitch information on a step after accidentally recording more than one pitch, only clearing the whole pattern does the trick. Very strange... There seems to be no way to delete a whole step, turning off the gate keeps the pitch information intact... any ideas?

I bought one of these because I'm at the very low entry level of understanding any of this stuff, and I saw that it has the words "Gate" and "CV" next to some phono jacks. That's all it really took to get this thing going, and I really like it so far. I'm glad to see that it can emulate a keyboard, as the one I bought is only functional as a software interface, which is why I went looking for stuff with the phono plugs/labels on it. Of course, now that I have something that can control a lot of drums with little effort, I'm going to need to assemble a drum synth kit, and get a home equity loan, and then buy a couple hundred bucks of wires, and then buy more modules, and then... Maybe I should start selling synth parts instead of buying them.

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I own for already 6 months this sequencer and still this is for me a difficult machine, mostly i use the doepfer darktime and the original Korg SQ 1 from the 70's. But this sq 64 is for me a little to hard to handle, in youre video you go a little to fast for me and i have always troubles with digital shit and small displays, maybe my age plays a roll in it 66 years yet. But i am keep on trying to get understanding this machine and so i will watch your video over and over again.😊😊

Is there a way to record a motion sequence? Example: I have it connected to my Korg Sampler 2 and I want to change the parameters on one sample the second time its played and go back to how it was when its played again and so on back and forth or what ever I want. I know there is the mod section but not a single person online addresses it for more that a few second and no one demonstrates it being used. Also Since the firmware update 2.0.3 there seem to be no onboard way to edit the CC messaged for knobs in control mode. Can anyone help with figure this out? Edit: I actually got this. If anyone needs help let me know.

i bascially want a machine like this, for Berlin style arp / seq work. not necessarily live, but to use in the studio and import to cubase once i have a nice melody / seq. is beatstep better than, or this one? beatstep has an option to be set into one scale: for example Dminor, and all pads are than in Dminor. can the korg do this as well? so you dont have to "think" about what notes you're entering, its just in THAT scale? thanks for the vid!

Heya, just started with SQ64 today abnd this has been so useful as manual falls pretty short! I've managed to connect to my RD8 drum machine and all good but struggling with the melodic. Set up with my Roland Ju06A and managed to get sound in Keyboard Mode but not to play live on the actual synth keyboard. Now just connnected the Reface CP and I am connected as proven by when in Control mode but can get no sounds in Keyboard mode and nothing recording playing in live either. I suspect it's to do with midi routing. Can you help? Thanks

I saw this was on sale last weekend, and I was about to grab one. But didn't have time to watch your video. I'm definitely interested now! I ended up getting a used Roland Boutique JX-03 instead since I saw that and was interested after playing with it for a little while. Definitely like the analog synthesis aspect of that, but the sequencer still lacks. After watching this, I'm definitely interested. However, I'm going to keep reading and watching to figure out what I actually want to do with my set up. I'm currently on a DAW for my MiniLab mk2, and without for my JX-03, and I'm struggling to figure out how to get them to work together. I essentially want to go hybrid so I have some flexibility for moving around, but I think reading up a bit more would probably be my best bet before moving forward with more. Thanks for the awesome videos! I'm planning to watch so much more!

Can this be controlled with midi? If I could fill this thing up with patterns and then call them up with cc from my Pyramid it would really help me free up some memory that I could use for more automations.

This question might be ridiculous, apologies in advance, do you have to set pitch for each step of the sequence individually? I got my SQ 64 the other day and I only have synths not modular, yet… Every other sequencer I have used allows me to set pitch based on which keys I press. For some reason this sequencer is not fully intuitive to me! Thanks again

Do you think it pair well with NordDrum2 via its 6 trig inputs? “Connect drum pads or other signal sources to the Trig Input 1⁄4" jacks. These inputs can be used with a variety of different signals. The sensitivity and the threshold of the inputs can be adjusted with the Inp Sens and Inp Thres parameters..” (NordDrum2 manual)

With the arp like that, you could change clock division for that track. But they really need to tweak a few things, the note length being huge (and you should be able to stretch arps by stretching the note length too)

Great review as always! Two questions: what is the lowest midi note it supports (SQ1 could only go as low as note 48). does anyone know, can I set each of the drum pads/sub racks to a different midi or other output? AS most drum synths have each voice on a separate track/midi channel. SO like could I sequence both my elektribe cycles and volca drum synth with the drum track assigning the voices from them across the 16 sub tracks? I really wanna know before I take the plunge but this thing seems really cool if it does. No point in the entire drum track only sequencing a kick drum! Like on my mc 707
