Korg SQ-1 - How to Set MIDI Channels. An Oddly Specific, Short Tutorial.

An Oddly Specific, Short Tutorial on how to set the MIDI out channels on the Korg SQ-1. Plus, we look at a few other features available in the SQ-1's global parameter settings mode.

The Korg SQ-1 is a small, very simple, well made and extremely fun and capable sequencer. I have used it in a number of my videos, but one question I often get asked is: how do I connect this thing via MIDI and how do I set the MIDI out channels?
Well, this is how!
If you have any other questions, go ahead! I'll try and help.

And if you have not already, please check out some more of my channel and if you like what you see and hear, please subscribe! It is always appreciated and is really helpful for a small, independent and genuinely low budget, self funded synth channel to be noticed in this sea of ever increasing well funded and, more or less, professional and unrealistic synth channels out there.
Regardless, I hope you found this helpful and hope to see you again.
Cheers.

Thank you so much. Came with a bit of anger and stress, and now I feel calm and happy. The unmentioned resolution to higher than 16 notes is very good information. Love the SG1, it was y first sequencer and is still my favourite.

I've always been really tempted by the SQ-1. Always hoping to find one on a super sale or used, but people seem to like to hold onto them. The Arturia Beatstep has always been tempting, too, but I'm much more attracted to the design of the SQ-1. The Beatstep just doesn't do it for me with that plastic case. But this chunky black thing? Yep, that's for me. :)

I keep trying to set my Roland tr-6s up to the sq-1 but the signal the sq-1 receives is clocked…. But wayyy to fast. I’m struggling to figure it out.

Do you know if the SQ1 can save the sequences for a next session, I want to use it with my microkorg xl for EBM baselines, so I can have those baselines arp variations again.

Quick afterthought. The manual seems to suggest the steps for A and B represent the 16 midi channels suggesting step 1 on channel A corresponds to step 9 on channel B.

I got a very odd question, I´m looking for a device that can send midi to a multitrack tape recorder (TASCAM MSR 24) and record the midi signal into a track so I can use it to synchronize with a DAW in order to use the tape as a master and the DAW as a slave, can I do that with this one, using the sync connectors plug to plug? thank u in advance

Nice video. As for the step resolution there is a section on the faq of the sq-1: "WW" ALTERNATE

I've had one of these for a few years and still use it every week. I knew about changing the resolution in the global parameters and today I came across this gem of a document on the korg website which explains the other parameters.

Good stuff! Excellent teaching and pleasant to listen to, unlike most youtubers who cater to the impatient by speaking too fast. The ambient music actually makes me more patient than I would otherwise be, too :) Subbed

Thank you for making this video. I was trying to find a way to control my daw's tempo with cv, and now that I watched this video, I found an affordable device to do this without having to buy a random eurorack module for hundreds of dollars. I would just connect a cv pulse signal to the sync in, and then connect the midi out to my interface's midi in and configure the daw to use the interface as a master clock.
