Korg Prologue Polyphonic Analog Synth Review - Daniel Fisher

Музыка

Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater’s synth sage, plays and free-form tweaks a prototype of the upcoming Korg Prologue 61-key, 16-voice analog synthesizer featuring three oscillators per voice (two analog and one FM/wavetable). You can use the link below to get to all the details and specs but, for this video, Daniel just plays, without commentary, for almost 30 minutes. Fisher is using an expression pedal connected to the EXPRESSION jack and is sometimes sweeping the Oscillator CROSS MOD parameter with it. The left and right audio outs from the Prologue are going directly to the video cam with no additional processing.

So you would highly recommend this over a deepmind12 ? I've got a minilouge and a poly d that I've had about 2weeks and I love it I never dreamed i could own something that close to a real mini moog looking at that 2600 as well but I'm thinking about waiting till they release there OB-xa clon or the desktop poly 800 that stuff probably wont be out till christmas or first quarter of 2022 exciting times to be a musician

The Rev2 may have more features, but I always buy based on sound and to my ears, the Prologue wins. I’ve never been taken by a synth so fast. Had to buy it right away. Honestly, the Multi-Engine with its own controls and EG makes up for lack of a couple LFOs. The real omissions are that motion sequencer and aftertouch. But you can get that with an SQ-1 and cheap pedal.

Mikeureko You don’t have an external sequencer or a DAW to do sequencing? The arpeggiator is pretty powerful and having a poly arpeggiator is a huge plus. I can see your point, though. The Minilogue XD will probably be right up your alley! It doesn’t sound quite as good, IMO, but it’s close.

  • @mikeexits

    @mikeexits

@@HotStrange I do have a Circuit, but it can only sequence 2 synths, overdubbing the on-board ones (which is great for layering though). I didn't even know you could sequence synths with a DAW, but I'm more interested in a DAWless jamming setup. It does sound like I would enjoy implementing that sequencing into my workflow though. I already have a Minilogue and am quite happy with it (along with my Volca Sample, FM, and Modular), so I won't be buying any more Korg synths for a while. Currently looking into the Moog Sirin, Behringer Model D, and Behringer Neutron. I guess once I get 2 more of these, it'll be time to get another Circuit! At which point I'll sync my Volcas to it and use their onboard sequencers. That's a long-winded explanation of where I'm coming from, lol. Thanks for trying to help :)

You people keep whining about a lack of modulation possibilities, but listen to the sounds it can make, how complex many of them are, and ask yourself if large modulation possibilities are really needed.

Now this is how you demo a synth! Great job. Got one the other day. I do have the Minilogue and, I got a DeepMind12. People are concerned about it being 4 Minilogues with some reverb. The two synths share the same VCO structure (or very similar rather), 2 VCO, 3 waveforms, all with different wave shaping capabilities. That’s where the primary similarities end. The 3rd oscillator is, at the moment, primarily a VPM (or FM in Yamaha speak) synth engine. You have 16 user slots here, one of the slots come preloaded with a wavetable synth from Korg, 2 wavetables with a sub wavetable, these can modulate each other. So it’s not an analog synth with a bunch of digital sampled waveforms in the 3rd oscillator (although you can obviously dial up basic waveforms if needed). Will be interesting to see how far people will be able to take it with the SDK. People talk about missing after touch, personally I’m happy that someone finally made a synth with _quiet_ keys, fast action, as well as excellent velocity response (you got 9 curves I believe), I can live without AT here. Why would anyone want a sequencer onboard by the way? As for the DM12....umm I guess you can blow out candles with it as a party trick, the two fans inside are...really great. It does have after touch but, the keybed is absolutely horrible (unless you only play elevator music like Uli Behringer, or make Stranger Things covers for a living:-). Sound wise there’s no comparison, but the DeepMind12 is a low budget affair, so can’t hold that against it.

They’re both great synths, but IMO, the Prologue sounds better. And having more voices, bi-timbrality, a full ADSR with more destinations, an actual audio rate LFO with more destinations, and full size keys it worth more to me than the sequencer on the XD, though the sequencer is awesome.

Great demo Daniel. You really did an amazing job showing this thing off and your demos just get better and better as you go. Congrats. I have no idea what to make of this synth. Seems like it's almost better at digital style sounds than classic analogue stuff. I've been listening to demos all morning and I have to say it's taken me hours to hear stuff I like come out of the Prologue which, for me, is usually a bad sign. As an aside does anyone know what filter is in this thing? Some patches I've heard in various demos remind me very much of the MS20 filter. I wonder if they've not just pilfered the filter out of their new ms20 mini?

One of the best things with the minilogue is the sequencer and the 8 voicemodes

Sauce_Aux haha, you're very kind! I can probably play anything with keys on it, but I usually feel like much less than a wizard! I can't wait to get all wizardy with this Prologue. Already pre ordered it!

I've been tempted by the minilogue and other equivalents, I need to wait and buy the first proper synth. This or others.

Rhizosphere the XD is certainly awesome but doesn’t sound quite as good, IMO. It still sounds excellent, though.

Man. Wish the prologue and the polybrute would have a baby that has the polybrute's control features but the prologue's sound and voice count.

Always totally underwhelmed by Korgs own promotional material, I though this thing sounded thin and crap till I watched this video. It happens every time.

I agree, even worse with the Waldorf Quantum promo videos. I always look for people who actually have done things with a synth before I decide it is for me. Test drive if you can (never trust the car salesperson).

GREaston If Sweetwater's Daniel Fisher can't make a synth he is demoing sound great, its not worth buying. I heard other demos of this Synth by other players that used poly chords, played some nice runs, but failed to show off the capability of this synth like Daniel Fisher.

First, Prologue sounds excellent and looks like a very solid build! It has a serious Minilogue vibe to it and more! Some minor and not so minor feature set differences (honestly a bit disappointed in some of thier decisions, I understand though). Not sure if this is worth $2000 or $1500 for me. Do I really need or want 16/8 voices of the Mini??? The Wavetable/FM OSC is super sick though! Going to pipe in four voices of FM8 or Wave Station into my Mini's external input and see what kind of Prologue flavor's i can get! Happy NAMM time to us synth fingers!

Hi Alex, listening to new gear and then finding a way to create similar sounds on your own equipment is an excellent way to explore synthesis. Thanks for watching!

one of your better demos thank you....well it has a wide sweet spot ....for the money I would rather get peak....or Rev 2 8 voice, not to say it isn’t a good synth it is a good synth just depends on what you already have and what you need....
